Azazeel is the kind of historical fiction that I love but find so rarely: a story set during a time of upheaval, a long gone era and place we do not know much about; and it is also a human story of faith and doubt, of the nature of good and evil, of love and devotion; with the ultimate message that fanatism of any kind is evil. "Killing people in the name of religion does not make it religious."

Hypa, our 5th century Egyptian Coptic monk is a devout Christian, yet also a sensitive man who show more cannot reconcile his faith with the atrocities he sees committed by Christians in Alexandria. His belief is also tested by his two passionate love affairs in his life, twenty years apart from his life, both beautifully rendered. He is also a physician, a book lover, a man of learning.

One of his defining moments in life is being present at the brutal murder of Hypatia of Alexandria by a Christian mob in 415. Hypatia was the leader of the scientific academy in Alexandria, well-known, respected, erudite, dignified. Hypa is fascinated by her, and his sense of loss is profound when she is murdered. Hypatia's murder is a turnaround in history - many people hold that it started the decline of the Hellenistic art and sciences in Alexandria.

The other historical figure in Hypa's life is his mentor, Nestorius, who became bishop of Constantinople in 428, and was excommunicated for "heresy" in 431. Nestorius had a highly technical theological dispute with Cyril, the bishop of Alexandria, and lost. (Look it up if you are interested.)

The book is beautifully written often lyrical, dreamlike; Hypa is somewhat naive and often struggles to make sense of these events. His inner voice becomes Azazeel - the devil - who tempts him, but also prompts him to write, and to fulfil himself. Good and evil is all inside us, so is God and the devil - he concludes. What matters is what we believe.

This is a wonderful novel, I highly recommend it to all historical fiction lovers. show less

يبدأ الكتاب بمقدمه طويله و هامه ليبدأ الفصل الاول عند الصفحه 52 و لمحبى تجاهل المقدمه انصح بان تتحامل على نفسك لكنها قواعد هامه لتدرك اعماق باقى الكتاب الهام و الخطير

لا استطيع-ولا اجرؤ-على شرح الكتاب نظرا لان شرح الكتاب يتشرح فى مجلد تكثر صفحاته على عدد صفحات الكتاب نفسه show more ..لكنه -كعاده يوسف زيدان-كتاب ممتع و خطر كانك فى حقل الغام فكرى فلا خطوه دون قنبله فكريه تحت قديميك..لكن فى الحقيقه فان كثير من محتوى الكتاب ذكر قبلا فى عزازيل و ظل الافعى و التقاط الالماس فى كلمات الناس بل و النبطى ايضا لذا فانا كنت شبه مهيأه لالتهام الكتاب فى ساعتين على الرغم من صعوبه الاسلوب

جاء الجزء المسيحى اكثر جدلا و اتقان بينما جاء الجزء اليهودى مصحوبا بنبره سخريه و عدم تصديق من الكاتب بصوره واضحه تماما و ان ادعى الحياديه..و جاء الجزء الاسلامى مسالم بلا كثير من الجدل او النقاش كعاده يوسف زيدان الا فى حقبه ما بعد الخلفاء و بدايه من الامويين

يختم بفصل شديد الاهميه و الجمال والصعوبه عن علاقه التدين بالعنف عموما و حتى تاريخيا

اجمل ما فى يوسف زيدان :هو احساسك بان لديه اكثر مما يكتب فكانه بيغرف من بحر فتشعر به يبسط لك او يلخص او حتى يتغاضى عن جزء يشعر بانك لن تفهمه وان شرحه

اسوء ما فى يوسف زيدان:هو تكذيبه و مناقشه لكل شئ او كل رأى فالكل -حتى الشخصيات التاريخيه-اما غير واعيين او كذابين او جهلاء او ذوى معلومات منقوصه فيصلح هو و يعدل و يصحح للكل فما رأيته قط يتفق مع رأى او حدث تاريخى بلا اضافه..قد يكون فعلا اعلم منهم جميعا لكنه يظل احساس مستفز

Attirato dalle descrizioni di copertina mi sono convinto ed ho preso e letto questo libro. L'idea che uno scrittore arabo narrasse le vicende di un protagonista nel periodo storico in cui l'islam si impone mi attirava. Inoltre l'autore è pure un noto islamista di professione. Bene, mi sono letto un vero capolavoro. Ed è da leggere per tanti motivi. Innanzitutto la storia è narrata dalla protagonista, una donna! la voce narrante racconta le sue vicende dal suo punto di vista, una donna show more comune, semplice, che affronta il suo destino con intelligenza e dignità. Che subisce usi e constumi (purtroppo non molto dissimili dagli attuali, e forse ora pure peggio se ci si riferisce alla questione dignità della donna) a testa alta, subendoli purtroppo, ma conservando nel suo cuore una dignità umana.
Dal punto di vista storico la vicenda è estremamente realista, e corretta. Narra di come l'islam si sia imposto come "religione di guerra" e di come sia stato facile in poco tempo travolgere tutti i popoli mediorientali in forza delle loro divisioni e dispute religiose (fatti veri, dovuti a scismi ed eresie fra cristiani). E mantiene anche un forte rispetto per le religioni poi sconfitte nell'area, con una punta di nostalgia per i residui di paganesimo già ormai storicamente sconfitti. انتهيت من قراءتها اليوم لاكتشف انها ليست بهذا السوء الذي تحدث الكثير عنه ولكن روايه تعتبر تمهيديه فى اغلب اجزاءها حتى وصلنا لما وصلنا إليه فى جوانتانموا والذي بدات فى قرأته مباشره بعد انتهائي من مُحال والتى -حتى الان- تطورت وتحسنت بشكل كبير ، فقط عيوبها الواضحه ضغت على show more مميزاتها ولولا أنى بدات ووصلت لمرحله كبيرة فى قراته جوانتانموا لاعطيتها 3 نجوم ولكن جوانتانموا اجبرنى خط الاحداث الشيق لان اتسأئل لماذا لم جلسنا نُمهد لقصه فى روايه كامله منفصله ؟ show less
