A sideways look at WWI through the story of a French Flemish farmer's daughter whose farm is just behind the front line. If it says little directly about the horrors of the war, it certainly brings home its disruptive impact on so many lives, both civilian and military. It is a testament to the endurance and adaptability of the human soul, whilst at the same time portraying how no one survives undamaged. I found it a little too emotionally cool for most of its length, it's hard to believe show more that the horrors are so completely shut out for so long. 13 January 2020. show less
