The book Familia Romana adopts what is known as the Natural Method. There is not a word of English in the book. The theory is that the student will figure out what the Latin means from context, from repetition and from reformulations of usage in a variety of sentences.

At first, this is unfamiliar. However, it does work, somewhat miraculously.

Having persevered with the Familia Romana book I came to the conclusion that some form of additional support would be very useful. A teacher or tutor show more could provdide this, of course, but for someone learning solo this Companion Guide is very helpful indeed.

It closely follows the material in the main book in the exact sequence and provides help at every turn.

The Companion has been written with care and with any eye for detail.
Highly recommened.

This is an absolutely excellent supplement to Hans Orberg's "Lingua Latina" textbook, and highly recommended for anyone who has ever wished that Orberg had provided more detailed explanations of Latin grammar. This College Companion parallels "Lingua Latina" chapter-by-chapter and gives thorough and careful explanations of all the grammar covered in each chapter using sentences, vocabulary, and situations taken from the chapters themselves. Not only university students, but also people show more teaching themselves Latin on their own from Orberg's book will find the College Companion an extremely helpful resource. show less
