About the Author

George Herbert, remembered as one of the greatest of the Metaphysical poets, was born on April 3, 1593 in Montgomery, Wales. He attended Trinity College, Cambridge. Herbert was a Fellow of Trinity, a public orator, the canon of Lincoln Cathedral and a rector in Bemerton. Herbert died on March 1, show more 1633. On his deathbed, he gave a manuscript of verses called The Temple to his friend, Nicolas Ferrar. Although Herbert wanted the manuscript burned, Ferrar had it published. The poems contained in the manuscript exalt God, but Herbert believed he was committing a sin of pride by creating an artistic work. (Bowker Author Biography) show less

Unique, bright, beautiful. He's sort of an Emily Dickinson, I think, for the turns of phrase and bright normal voice in the midst of heavy wrestling with the metaphysical.
If I ever start to think I am smart or educated, I can pick up George Herbert's Poems and get back in my place. Nonetheless, with persistence and patience, I can glean blessings from this saint.
With Hopkins, one of the greatest Christian poets; you can actually use the poems for prayer or meditation. “And all my sour-sweet days, I will lament and love” is a very good summary! We also get to sing him in various hymns. Favourites: “I got me flowers to straw thy way” from “Easter”; “Prayer, the church’s banquet”; “Let all the world in every corner sing” (there is a fantastic Vaughan Williams anthem setting of this); “Virtue”; “King of glory, King of show more peace”; “The Call”; “The Flower”; “I will complain, yet praise” from “Bitter-sweet”; “The God of Love my shepherd is”; “The Elixir”; “Love bade me welcome” and “Whether I fly with angels, fall with dust” from “The Temper”. show less
A fine compilation of 17th poets, including George Herbert. I am not a huge fan of 17th century religious poetry, but this was a good book to give one an overview and a starting point for further study.
