This book is decent, avoiding most of the worst of pop psychology, though a bit too positivist to be useful for those with truely traumatic backgrounds.

Nevertheless, his quotes(P. 230) from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the difficulty and the discipline required by practicioners of non-violent resistance make this book worth the read.

Also, P. 232 on Food reminds me of a former friend in 1994 who accused me of being a religious fanatic when I suggested that being thankful for every slowly show more enjoyed bite of food was a ritual of love. Now, in advising us to enjoy a slow meal alone from time to time, savouring the tastes and feeling thankful, I feel vindicated. If this is fanatisism, it is healing.

Still an interesting read, and quite good for the majority of the middle classes who have been raised essentially as spoiled folk who take their good fortune for granted.
Peace,

This book helped change my life. I wanted to get into mindfulness, but didn't know where to start. This was gifted to me, so that made it an easy place to start. I'd read one new chapter a week, always starting by re-reading the previous week's chapter. I'd then have a full week of thinking on just one simple lesson each week. I don't know if that would work for others, but it worked for me. I'm sure there's a ton of good books on mindfulness, but this was a great start for me. Even though show more it will always be a work in progress, I am much better at keeping my mind and anxiety from spinning out of control. show less
