The book leads with an obvious question of “where does medicine come from?” Then it goes on to explain how most of the substance we use come from plants. The book then brakes down what type of plants can be used and the people who find them. In this book you will see some common plants like Ginseng and some not so common plants like the purple coneflower. As the book progressed it then tells you how some of these new plants are being used to help find cures for illness we have today like show more cancer. I like this book and i think it is a good book to read to my students. It will take a little doing to get incorporated into a lesson plan but it can be a very useful tool. show less
This book discusses the origins of medicine in a way that is more geared toward older children, but still easy to read. It discusses how many medicines start out as plants in forests, and addresses the issues behind deforestation. A good informational book for students to better understand where our medicines come from, and a good introduction to holistic/natural remedies.
Full of information that is useful and practical, though certainly not really a captivating story. Pharmacy in the Forest is a good independent read for older readers. It is also a great introduction to holisitic health and healing. The pictures make the pages more interesting and the text is easy to read. Ages 10 and up.
