I am embarrassed to say that I paid the princely sum of £0.60p. for this book. How can so much human thought be worth so little?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book whilst it covered Bible history. It gives a clear concise review of the Bible from its earliest days until the beginning of the 20th Century. This was both fascinating and educational. It lead me to understand that, for all the lack of poetry, the 'nearly infallible version' is more accurate than any earlier printed versions.
My show more reservations come with the latter chapters of this book, which deal with the modern 're-evaluation' of the Bible as a poor man's communist, or fascist, manifesto. Perhaps you would prefer a feminist re-working of the Bible?
I would be more than happy for my local church to have a female officiating, a lady Archbishop of Canterbury would be absolutely fine and, I would be delighted to live long enough to see the first openly female Pope but, I do draw the line at pretending women were given an equal status in biblical times. Once one starts to play with history, where does it end? The holocaust never happened, the First World War was a myth: if we do not learn from our past, as someone so eruditely said, we are condemned to repeat it.
This is, a criticism of the theory, not the book reporting it. This is an excellent book, which everyone should read. show less

The book has a good overview of the development of the canon, the history of translations and how the Bible has been applied in the past.
