The Politics of Individualism: Parties and the American Character in the Jacksonian Era by Lawrence Frederick Kohl
A classic account of second party system. As where previous historians thought either wealth or etno-culutral identity drove party loyalty, Kohl argues that responses to the emerging market economy determined political affiliation. If one felt positive about the changes, they joined the Whigs. If one felt threatened by the changes, they joined the Democrats.
