- Short biography
- Christof Thoenes lived in Rome where he was Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter der Bibliotheca Hertziana (Max-Planck-Institut). He studied art history, German language and literature, and philosophy in Berlin and Pavia. He specialized in Italian art history with a special focus on Renaissance architecture, on which he wrote numerous books and articles. He taught in Berlin, Hamburg, and Venice, and he was a member of the Consiglio Scientifico of the C.I.S.A. Andrea Palladio in Vicenza, the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca in Rome, and the Accademia Raffaello in Urbino.

This book is really a history of architectural theory - which is no bad thing. It pulls from some of the greats such as Vignola, Pugin and Koolhaas. Fascinating read with many contemporary drawings, illustrations and pictures
