In order to understand style and usage manuals, you have to have a fundamental idea of how written English is put together and the terminology that people use to discuss it. If you didn't get that kind of background in "grammar" school, this 2 volume set can't be beat for filling in the gaps. It is also a handy reference for basic style questions about common punctuation. The only caveat is that it's old and things change, so consulting a current style manual on a regular basis is also show more recommended. show less
I have an older edition of this book that I acquired used. It dates from 1963. I've used it as a reference tool, haven't read it from cover to cover. I'd like a more modern, more thorough one, but this has been okay. If I could only apply myself a little bit better, I could learn all sorts of things about grammar!
Well. It's a book of grammar and composition from 40 years ago. Kinda boring.
Greatest grammar book ever written. It's a crime that it is no longer in print.
