Peter Terrin

I spotted this book looking new and unread on the library shelf. When the blurb informed me that it was a dystopian fable, how could I resist? I should add that I read a translation from the Dutch by David Colmer, but goodreads did not seem to have the edition listed.

'The Guard' shares a name with an extremely funny film starring Brendan Gleeson but, although it has moments of amusement, the novel is mostly unsettling and creepy. It centres around Michel and Harry, two security guards show more seemingly imprisoned in the basement of an expensive gated development. They have no idea what is happening outside the basement and their isolation breeds paranoia, which breeds madness. The back cover also describes it as ‘Pinter-esque’, but I can’t comment on that. The structure is of many short chapters, which give it a disjointed feeling and reinforce the unreliability of the narrator.

I wouldn’t say that I enjoyed this novel as such, as it is in places truly horrific and disturbing. I appreciated it as a microcosm of wealth inequality, competitive individualism, and fear of the other combine to psychologically toxic effect. The mysterious quasi-apocalypse hanging over much of the narrative created a high level of tension, which kept me reading avidly. show less

Een puzzelboek, soms irritant, dan weer fascinerend. De schrijver heeft een prettige vertelstijl, mild ironisch, die het eerste langzame deel verteerbaar maakt. Het drama in deel twee is heel intens beschreven, aangrijpend. Maar is het écht? Precies daarover gaat deze roman, het autobiografische in de literatuur. De hoofdpersoon is een schrijver die probeert te ontsnappen aan zijn toekomstige biograaf, door hem een kant-en-klare biografie aan te leveren, in de vorm van een roman over de show more schrijver T. Maar dan haalt de werkelijkheid hem in. Of niet? In het laatste deel van het boek komt de onvermijdelijke biograaf aan het woord, die al aan zijn werk begonnen is toen T nog leefde. Er zijn allerlei spiegeleffecten tussen de verhalen en in relatie tot de werkelijkheid: de achternaam van de auteur begint tenslotte ook met een T. In zekere zin heeft de schrijver Terrin een waargebeurde, dramatische geschiedenis in zijn familie binnen in een roman verstopt, uit bescherming tegen de journalisten, critici, het publiek, die ongegeneerd nieuwsgierig zijn naar zijn persoonlijke leven. Het is niet voor niets dat zijn dochtertje Renée (de naam!) in coma raakt precies op het moment dat de schrijver een grote prijs krijgt en beroemd wordt. Een boek om over te blijven nadenken.

Het boek lijkt mij de romanvorm van de paradox "Wat ik zeg, is niet waar", een slang die in zijn eigen staart bijt. Als de auteur namelijk stelt dat de schrijver T een namaakbiografie over hem schrijft, en hij T juist in die namaakbiografie de werkelijkheid laat noteren, dan kan geen enkele lezer nog beweren dat juist dat deel autobiografisch is. Ga maar na: als je vindt dat de schrijver Terrin autobiografisch heeft geschreven, naar de werkelijkheid, dan is wat hij zegt over T dus waar en dus is wat T presenteert als biografie nep, bedoeld om de toekomstige autobiograaf om de tuin te leiden. Als je daarentegen accepteert dat Terrin niet autobiografisch schrijft, dan is wat T schrijft waar, maar niet autobiografisch. Het enige wat voor de paradox nodig is, is dat T het verhaal over de dochter Renee geschreven heeft. Is dat het geheim van T, zoals in het kortste hoofdstuk vermeldt wordt? Dat T, die verzonnen is door Steegman, als het ware wraakneemt door zelf weer als Steegman te schrijven? Het lijkt me een mogelijke interpretatie, waarbij je T kunt interpreteren als Terrin en/of als Typemachine. Het middendeel is immers op een typemachine geschreven.

De auteur Terrin heeft een boek willen schrijven over het drama dat hem overkomen is, zonder dat hij de lezers, critici en journalisten de gelegenheid bood ermee aan de haal te gaan als autobiografie. Dat is hem gelukt door het verhaal in een paradoxale romanstructuur te verpakken. Een structuur die doet denken aan David Mitchell's Wolkenatlas. show less

Fascinating study of a man's mental health deteriorating. The setting alludes to a type of fascism? heavy racism. Difficult to read at times, because the narrative becomes almost completely driven by hallucination. The writing is terse but at the same time beautifully succinct. I am motivated to seek other works of this author. This is a fantastic book that looks into many areas of the human mind at the same time. Written in spare prose that reflects both the setting and the lack of information the guards have about the outside world, the novel is truly a literary and storytelling triumph.
I received a copy from the publisher so that I could write a review of the translation, and was rivited by the work. I haven't heard about this author before but the concept was interesting. While I expected a dystopian style show more read, what I found was much more nuanced and stylistic than the usual novels in this genre.
The guard who takes the lead in the narrative is not the leader inside the two-person squad. That choice from the author opened up this story to telling a subtle yet powerful story about confinement, control, voluntary subjugation, and the dynamics of human relationships in personal and organizational terms. The same elements can be read on an extended level that touches on elements we're experiencing in different developed cultures today.
All these elements unfold in tiny ways that are no less powerful for the gradual movements involved. Some readers have responded to this work with confusion, claiming that they either didn't understand the work or that later events were not supported throughout. I disagree. This novel reveals itself to readers who pay attention. For those who want more from a dystopian story than the usual justice-is-served or all-are-doomed endings, The Guard is the one to read. show less
