- This series takes place in 13th - 14th century Scotland. After the death of Alexander III (19 March 1286), his heir was his granddaughter Margaret, Maid of Norway (9 April 1283 – 26 September 1290). On her way to Scotland, she became ill and died in the Orkney Islands.The lack of a clear heir led to a period known as the "Great Cause", with several families laying claim to the throne. To avoid civil war, Edward I of England was invited to arbitrate, but he seized the occasion to declare himself overlord of Scotland. John Balliol was declared to have the best claim to the throne, but he was a weak king called "Toom Tabard" or "Empty Coat."Lead by such notables as Andrew de Moray and William Wallace, revolt against England broke out, while the most powerful families continued to maneuver for the throne.
