Your home pages are now customizable. You can move sections up and down and turn them off and on as much as you like.

The link is right next to your member name at the top of the page (hint: it has that big yellow "NEW!" right next to it).

Please let me know if you have problems. As with any new feature there will be comments and we'll respond as well as we can.

It's impossible for me to see the complete light box that pops-up when you press the "customize this page". Now I'm running IE8 beta 1, so that's definitely not supported, but since I run it in IE7 emulation mode the same might happen on the real IE7?

Maybe a screenshot might help...

http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/2048/lightwrongxi3.jpg

It might be IE8 specific though, don't have a real IE7 to test with.

Mmm, seems the same problem as reported in e.g. message 382 of the second thread on the member home pages. So probably not IE8 specific.

Thanks. I tested on IE6 but I don't have an IE7 install right now.

Very nice. Things seem to be showing up fine with FireFox 3 and XP here, but the reload time for the home page after making changes is crazy slow right now. I'm hoping that's just because people are jamming up the bandwidth by playing around with the format.

But I do have to say that it is nicely done. The light boxes move around smoothly and everything seems to work correctly so far. Just the slowness in reloading for me right now.

5conceptDawg
Jul 1, 2008, 12:08 am

Slowness, eh? I can blame other people for that. Yay! :)
Seriously though, I'll ask John if there is anything strange going on. Probably not. Probably just a lot of traffic right now.

Shouldn't that be June's batch, come back in July?

Something different: when I hover over the items in the customization dialog, my mouse cursor always looks like the four arrow thingy, pointing up, down, left, right, even when I hover over one of the check boxes. This made it not immediately clear to me that I could actually still press the check boxes.

Those are good bugs but let's keep this discussion centered on the customization feature. Feel free to post those bugs to the over-arching "Home page" topic. Or start new bug reports for them. They'll get the best response that way because they can be starred by one of us to make sure they get done.

It's nice, but the "Top Tags" feature added with the other stuff breaks everything on Firefox 3 for some reason. If I turn Top Tags off using the nifty customize feature, it's all good.

15marietherese

Since none of the modules are currently loading (yes, I know this is a known problem), I tried turning them all off.

From the resulting http://www.librarything.com/ajax_home_section_save.php page, I got:

It does seem to have done the job though, if I reload my home page. Behaves the same in Opera, Firefox and Internet Explorer 6. Turning everything back on is fine.

Internet Explorer 6 is actually even worse clicking the customize link does bring up the customization box, but along with it:
A Runtime Error has occurred.

And after I've turned off all the modules, my home page brings up brings up:
A Runtime Error has occurred.

I haven't experimented to see what happens if I only turn some off.

28conceptDawg

The problems I mentioned all the way back in #27 are now fine, except for bringing up the customization box in IE 6 (which I can sympathise with you not caring about!).

It still says...

Internet Explorer 6 is actually even worse clicking the customize link does bring up the customization box, but along with it:
A Runtime Error has occurred.
Do you wish to Debug?

Line: 458
Error: Type mismatch

And then seems to carry on perfectly happily if I say no. Since I never use IE anyway, if I can avoid it, I'm happy. :)

But thought it was still worth mentioning, in case you get anybody else yelling about it.

Same problems here for IE6 - XP.

67conceptDawg
Jul 1, 2008, 8:57 am

I'll be working on the IE6 lightbox issues later today/tonight.
They are a wider scope than just the Home page since we use the lightbox all around the site now (grrr).

68lilithcat
Jul 1, 2008, 8:59 am

>66 SqueakyChu:

I knew this was going to happen. This is useless in IE6/XP, just as the "add recommendations" is useless in IE6/XP. It seems anywhere on the site that this box is used is simply not functional with that browser/OS combination.

What is really frustrating is that this has been a known issue for quite some time, and I have to say that I am upset and disturbed that it was not solved before this was instituted. It's too basic.

69qebo
Jul 1, 2008, 10:15 am

THANKS! It's great to wake up and find that a new feature has arrived and the most egregious bugs have been fixed overnight. I can get everything I really want on the screen, no scrolling necessary. I'm fine with the left-right column division, but that's because the items I want on each side fit in almost exactly the same vertical space. If they didn't, I'd be frustrated too. (I'm still not wild about the gray box at the top of the left column, though it's easier to live with now.) As others have mentioned in the ridiculously long 2nd (maybe it's time to start a 3rd) thread about the Home page, the current organization (personal on the left, LT on the right) may not be for everyone. I can imagine three divisions: things you're stuck with (the gray box and announcements) at the top, and two customizable columns.

Edited: Jul 1, 2008, 10:46 am

Thanks! I like the new tag watch. Everything seems to be working for me (FF 2, XP).

Just one suggestion: if the customization part of it is going to get developed further, it would be nice to be able to move things from the left to the right column, or vice versa. I've got a lot more in the left than the right that I'd like to see, so it would be nice to be able to rearrange the screen space to fit more in one screen.
(Edited: Oh, I see that suggestion has also been made on the homepage thread.)

Everything seems to be working okay for me (knock on wood!), but I have to agree with message #68 here. I don't understand why features keep being implimented with this box thing, when it is a known bug that a very popular and much-used browser does NOT support that box? It means that so many users can't use this feature... it doesn't make sense.

And, just for curiosity's sake: I used to use IE6 through MSN, but right now I'm temporarily using AOL 9.0. Are there any cons to that, any known LT-related bugs using AOL?

I'd love to put things like members with my books, top tags, etc. on the right, but it seems like only vertical arrangement, not horizontal arrangement, is permitted. Any chance of that changing?

Jul 2, 2008, 4:50 am

Oh, also, in IE6 you can just deselect the "Always show this warning" box and you can safely ignore those types of errors. The little box on the bottom left of the screen will still show the warning but you won't have to look at them all of the time. The page works fine in IE6 but does show the error. I'm going to work to get those out of there but they aren't a show stopper so they haven't been moved up the list yet.

The warnings in IE are mostly useful for programmers.

Can someone respond to Maggie1944 (Post #81)?

Maggie1944, could you post what browser and browser version you are using? Based on the other posts I've seen, ConceptDawg needs that information to figure out what's going wrong.

I just now got a chance to test out the Tag Watch feature, and I LOVE it!! I honestly had no idea what it was until I messed around with it... And now I have 5 more books in my wishlist pile. lol It's like my own personal tag-based recommendations, without the strange algorithyms of recommendations. I love it!

I am on XP, and I think Internet Explorer 6.

If someone could remind me how to check to be sure I am remembering correctly I will appreciate that person greatly. (-:

To those in the know, could maggie1944's problem have something to do with javascript?

108sqdancer
Jul 3, 2008, 12:40 pm

No problem.

I'm on Windows XP Professional with IE6 and the customizing feature works for me. I wonder if it could have something to do with your settings?? Hopefully someone more computer literate than I am will have a suggestion. ;)

Jul 3, 2008, 1:40 pm

yes, that sounds like a very good theory. I could try going in a setting everything at default and see whether that helps, but I don't think I have the energy right now. Maybe later.

Thanks for the idea.

FWIW when I go to my homepage using IE7 (I normally use FF), it says, down in the left of the status bar at the bottom, that there is an "error on page":

Line: 459
Char: 6
Error: Type mismatch.
Code:0
URL: {the url for my home page}

(PS. "Error on page" only comes up once I've clicked the pencil to edit a module.)

I cannot customize my page. Every time I click on the link I get an error message...

>110 rsterling:

I am having that problem on work PC (and I won't be back on it till Monday) on XP Pro, IE7. When I click the pencil to edit any lightbox here (including Member Recommendations) nothing happens, but I get that error code in the yellow triangle at bottom left. May not be exact same code, but looked like that. I will check Monday. You are the only other person I have seen mention it.

At a quick skim of the above messages, I don't think this has been mentioned, but apologies if I missed it.

It's not a bug, but is something I find annoying. I am interested in a lot of the features now in the first column, and very few now in the second column. So, now that I've customized my modules, I have a LOT of scrolling to do in the left-hand column, and all that lovely open space in the right-hand column. I know there is a conceptual difference between the columns (mine vs. site-wide) but, in the interest of making some of us LTers (well, me, anyway) really happy, couldn't we move modules from one column to the other?

Now it works. Go figure. :-)

Jul 7, 2008, 11:23 am

114> I thought this too, but there is more than just the social difference between the columns. The left column is also twice as wide as the right column so it may be a problem to swap modules from one side to the other.

#116, I see what you mean, but this should be a solvable problem.

118conceptDawg
Jul 7, 2008, 10:32 pm

Yes, the idea was that the right column would hold more concise information too (how that was carried out is debatable. heheh). There are a couple of columns that wouldn't fit so neatly in the smaller confines of the right side (tagwatch and local, specifically). We could make the right side bigger and just make it a free-for-all but something about that doesn't sound "right." But then again, my right is another person's insanely wrong.

OsideNative, is customization working for you now? I made some changes but haven't worked on finding the error that IE is having (that's next). But if it is working for you then I at least have that knowledge.

#118,conceptDawg, I see what you mean, but if you take a look at my home page you will see what my problem is. If there's some way to let me move even some modules from left to right, it would be a big help. For example, I could see "members with your books," "Recent Recommendations," "Top Tags," and "My Zeitgeist" being reconfigured, either to be narrower and longer or to appear in fewer columns. Of course, I am NOT a computer programmer, so this comes from an editorial, not a coding, perspective. I must add that I am always very appreciative of (and often amazed by) the responsiveness of all the LT staff. Thank you.

Despite all the joy above, I still can not customize my home page. And it is way too big for me to use or enjoy, I wish, if I can not cusomize it, to be able to open on profile rather than home. Is that possible?

SO, I signed out of LT; signed back in

***NO CHANGE***

and no error messages that I saw

I am pretty sure I am on IE6, I have resisted upgrading to 7 because when I tried it once, all hell broke loose.

But if you want me to verify it, I'll need to be told how to do that.

Thank you for the attention and help.

To find your version click on the Help menu and on About Internet Explorer on the pull-down menu.

I've just checked, using IE 6, and it does work for me. But!

When I open the customize window, I see "cancel/close" in the top right corner, and the two columns representing the available panel items in the middle of the window. I don't see the Save button, as it's below the bottom edge of the window. If I scroll down, then it's fine. And the despite the use of the word "close" in the top right link, it really does mean cancel!

I'd suggest moving the save button up to the top left corner.

Top check the version of IE, go to the Help menu, and select About. I get a new window which tells me (immediately below the IE logo): Version: 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254.

The important bit is that leading "6" :)

I have also just checked using IE6 on XP sp2, and it works for me. This is not to say, maggie1944, that you aren't experiencing this problem.

Also, maggie1944, when you say you "went to Profile", do you mean that you were on the Profile tab, or were you on the new Home tab? When you went to "Edit Section", did you do so by clicking the "customize this page" link that lies between your username and a yellow "New!" box on the left-hand side of the page? I'm not asking because I think you're doing something wrong, but just to make sure that everyone knows exactly what you're saying is happening.

133maggie1944
Jul 11, 2008, 9:17 am

Who knew that closing a window would cancel it? I am off to try again. This time after I hit save I am leaving to go have a cup of coffee. Maybe a gremlin will come along and close the window for me, without cancel.

Jul 11, 2008, 9:26 am

ok, I went back, performed the deselection and hit save and went into the living room, turned on the TV, watched the weather man give his report and then the traffic reporter came on. Bored, so I came back here. I clicked talk and here I am. The little box below which illustrates progress in loading something is less than half filled with little green bars. So I think that means my deselection choice is still being born. Very slow labor.

Going back to TV.

135maggie1944
Jul 11, 2008, 9:28 am

Nope. No workie! posting in talk evidently canceled it. The item deselected (from the blogs) is still on my home page.

Really, I am going to go work on my budget while watching the TV.

136jjwilson61
Jul 11, 2008, 9:30 am

Hitting the save button at the bottom of the page (not the cancel/close link at the top) should also close the page. It doesn't for you?

137maggie1944
Jul 11, 2008, 10:21 am

No, after I hit the SAVE the window remains open.

At any point, do you have a little yellow symbol (caution symbol: exclamation point in a yellow triangle) at the bottom left of Internet Explorer, in the status bar? (To make sure the status bar is showing, go to "View" and then make sure the status bar is checked.") If you do have this symbol, if you click on it, what is the error message that comes up?

I'm very much a non-specialist here, but I'm wondering whether it has something to do with either a javascript coding error, or some setting in your browser that might be blocking scripts.

139rsterling
Jul 11, 2008, 12:41 pm

RE Javascript, when I try my homepage in IE7, although customizing works, I'm still seeing an error message in the lower left. When I click it, it says:

Line: 471
Char: 6
Error: Type mismatch.
Code:0

(So, it's the same error that I and others reported earlier, but on a different line.)

140maggie1944
Jul 11, 2008, 5:24 pm

Nope. No error messages, or yellow symbols suggesting error messages...

darn.

So, might be something "blocking" huh?

Maybe I'll ask a nearby neighbor who claims expertise to come look at the settings.

Too tired to try it myself right now.

Does anyone know if it would work for Maggie if she went to another computer, or allowed someone else to do it for her signing on as her from another computer, if the changes she's longing to make would stay stuck ever after?

I do sympathize, Maggie, because I had a similar problem when the page came out initially. It was so huge I couldn't work with it on my very slow dial-up connection. That made the forced change-over to the new HP a real pain.

I know the changes I made seem to stay stuck from one computer to another, so perhaps that would help. I hope you get it resolved. BTW, encouraged by others here I switched to Firefox (free to download, and though very lengthy for me because of speed, it did finally get finished). Firefox has the additional benefit of allowing you to disallow images which lightens the load even more on overloaded pages like the new HP.

Well, fancy that...I just happen to be getting a new lap top sometime later in July. Once that is set up I certainly can try to do the edits from the lap top and if I want to change them I can go back to my lap top. Just what every single, retired school teacher on a fixed income needs: two computers! or and 2 dogs and ...

well, enough said. It is not so serious a inconvenience that I can not wait to fix it later. Luckily, I use Comcast cable and my loading time is usually pretty good. Thank you all very much for giving it a good college try.

I'll report in later - a couple of weeks or so.
