Mornin' Kath!

I don't like anything being "extremely loud and close"...
that title sounds nerve-wracking to me.
I try not to judge a book by its name -
but sometimes it is hard for me to get past it.
In this case, I don't have to.
Will move on - lots of other books :)

Hope you take a day off from cleaning today ;-)

Hi Cee ~ I have every intention to do just that..

I plan to make baked potatoes with broccoli for lunch..and reading is on my agenda..

Yeah.. as I said.. got sucked in.I try to avoid hyped books, I often dislike them it seems..
this last one was just.. well, nerve-wracking is a good way to start a long list of negative adjectives/
The second star was because there were a few parts that were touching.. they were just plonked in there
like raisins in oatmeal, but they were there .. otherwise it would have been one star.

I'm so behind, I'm commenting on your last thread. I also disliked Extremely Loud. I read it years ago, pre-LT, and thought it was terribly pretentious. I only finished it because of all the hype then and I thought for sure that I was missed something. Also because I owned it (thankfully a paperback).

I have been thinking of reading The Well and the Mine.. I really liked this one.

My next read is going to be The Truth of All Things: A Novel
By: Kieran Shields It will be a Vine read.

I just sat and watched Dr Phil.. a show I usually dislike... a lot..
but John Edward and Char were on, doing readings. It was really good.

Then I did dinner for the furkids. I am amazed by how long that takes some days..
tuna for the kitties and the last of Duncan's meatloaf for him. Tomorrow it is
chicken and rice for him and Spaghetti for us :)

*groan* Dr Phil...don't like him either but I do like John Edwards :) he used to have a show on a cable channel but I haven't seen it in a long time. DH doesn't like him :/ I think it's cuz DH has the "twinkle" but doesn't like to talk or watch things about it if you know what I mean. {{{denial}}}

The cable show has been off the air for years.
I follow JE on facebook.. and his website..

I dislike Dr Phil.. but I have to say that he did a great job of

So we had large men with no ID badges canvassing the neighborhood again...
it happened about 6 - 8 weeks ago.. those men were banging on the windows and
coming back to the houses 2-3 times. Generally frightening the neighborhood.
I didn't open the door, today.. he had no ID, was just waving a tablet at me, with Working America
pulled up on the screen. I don't trust that... I could do that if I were a criminal.

I told him through the door to come back tomorrow..
I then called the local dispatch and asked that they send someone
to please make sure they were who they said they were. We had been told that
there is no canvassing allowed at night. ( turns out the supreme court says otherwise)

I also asked that the officer call me ... There have been several rapes both to the
north of us and near Pittsburgh to the south of us..in the last few days. General description
could have been this man or any of hundred of local men....
I called Kim to let her know to not open the door, and Margie to tell her not to open the door...
she said our neighbor Danielle a pretty young neighbor with a baby was out on the porch in her PJs
and talking to this guy. Of course I went down. I told her to go inside.. she did.. I questioned the guy
who was very rude and aggressive in his approach.

I told him it would be better if he would do his canvassing in the daylight, or on the weekend.
I told him to go away.

I came home.. the officer called and said.. "nothing I can do "
because he has said that for years. He never responds he is a lazy ass.
Has been for 20 years. He refused to even drive by and check them out..
I am VERY angry. I asked only that the police make sure that they were who
they claimed to be. Neighborhood watch meeting is Thursday. I am gunnin' for bear.
ARGH!

And you know what? I am angry at myself for being uncomfortable and
yes.. afraid. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Hateful world, ain't it?

Never answer door unless dh is home...he's still a pretty big fella, 6'3" and can be loud and scary when needed...Sometimes I don't answer it even then...fortunately our tiny area is well-stocked with careful neighbors.

Ham and greens and summer squash/zucchini for dinner...made a vat of spag. sauce Sunday, had some last night and froze the rest...dh is smoking pork tomorrow.

42tymfos
Jan 10, 2012, 9:34 pm

What were these people "supposed" to be canvassing about, anyway? I would think that banging on windows and such would be considered harassment, regardless of why they are there or when they are allowed to be there.

43mckait
Jan 10, 2012, 9:54 pm

They said Working America and that was the webpage he had on his device. And it was the last group that banged on the windows....these were , as far as I know, bavging only on doors. I believe in cavassing neighborhoods for good reasons. They might have been on the level...but, I just felt like they were...off. probably just me.

I had a bad feeling about my stepdad today. Called to check on him....whenthey showed up I was on the phone with my sister....he had fallen again.

:( not good.

Don't get much canvasing around here. An occasional Jehovah's Witness shows up. I think we had Mormon missionaries stop once. Census people when that was going on. Somebody stuck a Comcast flier on my doorknob. I love my boring neighborhood.

45ChelleBearss
Jan 11, 2012, 4:00 am

Sorry to hear you had annoying people in your neighbourhood!

I generally don't answer my door anyway. Being a shift worker people tend to knock on my door when I'm sleeping, so I don't bother to get up.
Anyone who would come visit has the door code to just let themself in or would call first, anyone else would be selling something I don't want anyway.

47mckait
Jan 11, 2012, 7:10 am

My concern is that anyone can do this canvassing. They no longer have to check
in with the town and get a permit or even stop by and let the authorities know that they
will be in the area. They are supposed to show a badge. I made one for the local police dept on
photobucket last night.. to prove a point. Anyone can pull up a webpage on a tablet and try to look official. I know how I sound, but you know.. there have been break ins and rapes in the area, and I
can't help but wonder why they have to be out after 8 pm.

These and the last group are often rude and refuse to go if you ask them to. I almost had to drag
the guy off of Danielle's porch last night. I don't mind Jehovah's Witnesses or Mormon missionaries..
We have those too.. or have had. But they turn up during the day or very early evening. The last
pair of Mormons ended up coming here once a week for dinner .. I think we got black listed after that..
'cause the boys would accidentally watch TV .. and take food back with them. They were the nicest kids!

anyway.. I do know it sounds like I am crazy.. but I don't like the attitudes of the last groups and
I don't like that the local police ( admittedly it is this one cop who NEVER responds to anything)
would not even drive through. I am still annoyed.

And I am worried about Walter. He is fading fast.. and it makes me very sad. He is a good man.

So sorry to see the news of your stepdad, Kath. Falls are what I fear the most among the elderly. They certainly can be lethal. Does he have a life alert type of thing to use if necessary?

Can the cops tell you at what point solicitors become harassmentors?

50mckait
Jan 11, 2012, 7:41 am

We finally did talk Walter into getting Life Alert. Problem is that the last several times he has fallen, it has
been outdoors. His neighbors .....well One actually looked out the door once and saw him lying bleeding from the head into the ice and snow and said are you ok? then left him there.

Usually, my sister takes him home and sees him in. Yesterday the weather was nice and he
felt okay... and ate well... so they let him drive himself.. and this happened. He has a cell phone..
but can't get how to autodial.. but he did manage to call my sister who lives one block away..

Good point.. they don't seem to care and to be honest, with the last supreme court ruling...
apparently that is a very grey area. I am pretty sure that it would have to involve a literally breaking in.

Hope your step-dad is OK.

How nice of you to feed the missionaries - I doubt you were blacklisted. :) New ones come and the old ones go and they probably didn't know about the lovely lady who was willing to feed them. I will tell you that my friends who have boys out in the world would hug and kiss you for being nice to their boys and feeding them.

I have a sign on my door that says "Absolutely no soliciting. I don't care what it is or who you are." It has been very effective. In the last three years, I think I have only had 2 people who dared knock on my door. One was last week - a salesman for Kirby. He had the nerve to tell me he wasn't selling anything, just offering me the opportunity to see a demonstration of the vacuum. I told him he was exactly who that sign was for and have a nice day.

We usually get the vans of inner city kids selling magazines or such. It makes me uncomfortable too - you don't know if they are legitimate and it can be scary.

the ones whose kids get flung out there all over the world

but one night they brought an older man here .. I guess to

I do love trees, though normally the leaf-filled kinds, rather than the barren winter variety. Yet, the coloring of and the snowfall make this a beautiful and tranquil. I'd love to crawl up in a chair (with a book of course) next to a fireplace looking out at the window at that beautiful view.

Last spring the Ash Borer got to it.. We are trying to save it but...

Morning, Kath! Had my coffee, ready for the world...or not. Housework today. Mandatory; the dust is heavy.

Mmm...love trees. Hate to lose one, hoping your ailing tree makes it, Kath.

I too often think, "Who is that old woman?" and quickly want to cry because, well, it's me.

Beautiful here today. Low 50's, full sun, no danged wind to chap my cheeks and freeze my ears. I enjoy all seasons, a good thing since I've left the land of endless summer (and a 3-day winter), Florida.

71-Cee-
Jan 12, 2012, 9:42 am

Hey, Kath!
I agree - all the seasons are good. I would, however, like to be in charge of how long each one lasts. And all trees are good... even dead ones that birds and animals continue to use. I love living in the woods. And I hope against hope that your poor sick tree recovers. It was/will be? a beauty.

Re mirrors - I avoid them! I'm sure they are all totally distorted! :-P

I have some beef in the crock pot cooking with onions.. it will turn into pepper steak later..
I found some nice red and yellow peppers at Aldi. I like to make the beef in the crock pot
so it is nice and tender.

I am going to make pork chops and parsley potatoes, for dinner..oh and cauliflower!
Then, the pepper steak will be just extra cooking day food. I can heat it up and make rice
whenever I want..

I cooked for Dunkers yesterday...

So I am good for a day or two or three aside from rice.
On the other hand, Dan usually prefers noodles to rice for pepper steak so ?
Dunno. I love rice!

Will and I went to dinner at a local diner tonight. As we left, I noticed a man who was trying to get through the door, down the steps and out into the parking lot. Clearly, he was having problems. I tried to help him. Because I'm having balance issues, it really was like a comedy skit. Will tried to help as well. Will was helping me while I was helping the guy with the walker.

As we finally got him to his car, we both noticed that the entire car had dents, bent fenders and long gashes in almost every square inch of the car. Clearly, he should not be driving. As we watched him drive out of the parking lot, he proceeded to drive right over a concrete divider.

What in the world is going to happen in our society. Who will help these people? I vow that when I retire If I am able, I'll find an agency where I can volunteer to help those without a family.

By the way, as we were helping the man in his car, his pants fell down. Poor guy was standing there with his slacks down around his ankles. It was cold outside tonight. I did not try to help him get his pants up....

Will laughed and said that there is always an adventure wherever I am.

Good Morning Kath!

Not much going on here. Dang radiator clanged at midnight and woke the punk up. He spent the rest of the night with us because any time we put him in his room he just screamed. So, not such a restful night. Glad I'm headed to doc's this morning because my ear continues to hurt. Antihistamine didn't really help. :(

Hi Linda :) it is really good to see you here... I am glad that you fell well enough to go out to
dinner, but what a sad story when you got there. The poor man. I have seen similar things..
older men and women who have no one to care for ... or about them. It makes me so sad.

Dan saw an older man from the neighborhood.. in his 80's ... shopping at the convenience store
nearby.. waling up this treacherous hill with mild and cat food and some other things. He refused a ride.
I went to their house the next day to offer rides to the store. The man is a little slow, I have known that..
but his sister now has dementia and they made her stop driving. It was so sad. She told me all sorts
of stories about her husband ( who passed many years ago) being in the hospital. She also said that people come in all the time and steal her glasses and phone book. I put my number
by their phone, and on a great big note with another number on the fridge. So far they haven't called and
when we checked on Wed. did not accept a ride to the store. Sad and worrisome. At least Walter has us..
even though he is so stubborn. Not sure what we will do when the weather is bad.. it is impossible to keep him in...and his falling has become an issue..

Hi Brit.. oh no.. what a way to wake up! lol. I have always been a huge fan of
those clunky old radiators :P I used to put our clothes on them so they were toasty when
we put them on in the morning :). I swear they keep it warmer, too. Poor Will, though..
and poor moms! My nephlet is afraid of the garbage truck and also wind. This is trash and recycle
day, which means two trucks.. and also a windy night/morning, so I suspect Kim had an interesting
time of it too. And I am so sorry that the earache is still with you.. that is awful! Hopefully you will
get some relief today :(

My back still hurts.. it is slightly less sharp a pain when I move this morning so I hope
that means it will get better quickly..

I did not go to the neighborhood watch meeting last night. Dan went.. and
so did Margie. There were no police there... but the mayor showed up. Mostly he kept saying
call the chief and tell him. The chief never answers his phone or returns calls, but there ya go!

On the lighter side.. I learned we have a resident who is a cross dresser. Margie used
to have a friend named Shirley who lived in town and had a masculine appearance. So
When she walked in and saw this person ( short dress, purple tights ) she said ..
"Shirley?" "NO, Jim" was the curt reply. Sounds like a good way to start the meeting!
Jim sat next to the mayor, who reportedly kept moving his chair away..

Did I tell you all about the woman I saw holding a sign about a killer dog?
She was standing at an intersection on the way to the main street of town on
Monday. I told Margie about it ... and described the nice looking, well dressed woman
and expressed concern that the dog she was concerned about might have hurt or killed her
dog. ( considering what the sign said) . Yeah. Turns out it was Jim. No dogs were harmed
but the poor guy ( ex airline pilot ) is absolutely terrified of dogs. Apparently the one that lived at 381
is especially scary to him. He thinks all dogs should be shot by the police.. so while I
am sorry he is so frightened, I .... don't agree. I am glad no dogs were actually injured though,
and suspect the dog at 381 is a fine, and perhaps just loud dog? Poor Jim. Terrible to be so afraid.

I do not have children and would lay odds that they are not in my future plans (not ruling anything out, but I don't think it likely I'll be a parent) and I do sometimes wonder what will happen to me in old age. Not that you have children so that you have a caretaker, and not like all children accept that role, but I still, the question/concern rears its head every once in a while.

How sad, the elderly man that you ran across. It's so good of you to try to help him. It's difficult to know exactly what to do about the these sorts of problems. I could never live in a small town... For about 7 years we lived in a somewhat isolated suburb of 20,000 people and I nearly went crazy!!! As you say, everyone knows everyone and I found it hard to fit into a town that kind of had it's people that had lived there since 1900 and was not that welcoming to newcomers. We ended up selling our house and moving back into the city. That's my kinda place! But everyone is so different. I've always been a city kinda girl. I like the anonymity and services of a city.

Deb... I could no more live in a city than fly to the moon on a broomstick.
I try to live by the GR you know? Sometimes it works better than others. I was
not very nice to Comcast on the phone yesterday. I might have done better if she was not the second agent to completely refuse to listen to what I said and just read her script. So.. I am just like all of us .. I do the best I can. But trust me, if ther actually was an anti gravity weapon, I would point it a few folks and watch them pop into outer space. I have a shortlist and a long one. lol

Chelle ... in my defense, I did not provide a link... on purpose. lol

Bonnie, nice to see you :)
Pinterest is a site where people "pin" or just post things that they like. either recipes,
photos, books, ANYthing that piques their interest. Then they show up on a main board for you to look at. There is a main board of "everything" and that option gives you a drop down menu to select and narrow to art, pets, clothing, tech etc. I is fun.. a nice place to store bits and pieces of things you might want to look at again or share with friends. You can follow people and they can follow you to see what you have pinned.

Brit to the rescue! I will have a look I need to practice with that keyboard! I will look for keyboard #3.
Thank you!!

I should know better than to post intentions.. I did not start the LTER, I did start

Fabulous Sweets! by Christina Strayer
posted this on Pinterest:

Recipe: Soda Can Cupcakes

Ingredients

1 box cake mix, any flavor
1 can room temperature soda, any flavor
Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°
Line muffin pan with liners.
In a medium bowl combine your soda and cake mix, stirring with a whisk until most of the lumps are gone.
Fill each liner 1/2-2/3 full of batter.
Bake for 18-20 minutes until cupcakes are springy and toothpicks comes out clean.
Let cool completely before frosting.
Variations

You can use any flavor combination you would like. Coke or Dr. Pepper would be great in a chocolate cake mix. Orange Soda, Mountain Dew, Sprite, Root Beer would all be fun to try too.

Mornin' Kath!
I have absolutely. no. interest. in pinterest. :-)
But that kinda follows that I have no interest in the human race in general.
I am lasting on this site cuz for some reason most people here are able to rise above the maddening crowd.

Ron just informed me that the air going out of the chimney from the new furnace is about 500 degrees! Measured by the guy who services the furnace. Huh? That sounds like a waste of heat to me. Maybe that's why we can't get any snow around here. I would think men would be all over that - trying to figure out how to harness that hot air!

Have a cuddly warm day!

Heat a large frying pan on medium-high heat. Add oil to the pan, when hot add shrimp. Season with salt and pepper. When the shrimp is cooked on one side, about 2 minutes, turn over and add garlic. Yum! Sounds wonderful.

Here's a thought re: laundry

One daughter yesterday sent me a brief email on "Simple pleasures"---Warm sheets fresh out of the dryer. Then she wondered what our ancestors did about laundry in the winters. Well, probably ignored it, is my guess, as bathing wasn't a high priority in the distant past. Although I remember frozen sheets, frozen diapers (imagine, if you youngsters can, *cloth* diapers, washed daily), and frozen fingers.

Life is better now.
I think.

That baby is 9 lbs plus by now so I am not sure how she is doing it.. I plan to stay home. I slept from
11p - 1 am then from 4:30 - 6:30 am and I am really tired. Then Dr appt, bloodwork and a quick stop at the hardware store to get the stuff that you spray on your window to make the ice disappear.
bought a couple of strings of outdoor lights too, to put in the decorative doo dad at the end of my porch..
and some giant hooks.

Stephen.. you have a point, guess it depends on what you like?
I seriously doubt that porn will ever outweigh good recipes and
pictures of crafts, puppies and handbags......never know though.

Linda.. He is so tired. That is the thing. He sleeps so much.. he doesn't even realize it. he just falls asleep talking, or sitting waiting to open his cards.. or ? It makes me sad. If you had known him even 3 years ago.. he was still working! He was a houseman at a local motor inn..

I came home and make some quickie soup and served it with nice crusty bread..

Just catching up and laughing my head off.

re Pinterest - I like it, but haven't become obsessed like some. It is a great way to keep track of things. Much better than bookmarks. I would say there is no porn, but that some people define nudity very loosely. I've seen plenty of mostly naked lady and naked lady with pertinent parts mostly covered photos on people's exercise or beauty boards. I also saw that someone had knitted a very unique set of ahem - fitted drawers for a man in their life. URp.

How's the back Kath? Hope you're up and around and back to normal.

My husband (the cook in our house) is away for a week, I have now an other male in the house, who is here to paint all woodwork (window, doors), as my husband is overly sensitive to the smell of the paint. And he does the cooking as I am no cook at all!!

Oh, here's a shameful thing about myself: I clean the fridge about 3-4 weeks. Today was the day...I always combine it with a Big Order Day...found a bottle of ketchup we had been happily using for cocktail sauce with a "Use By Date" sometime in 2010! Perhaps the horseradish kills all germs?
