You have your way, I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it does not exist. - Friedrich Nietzsche

Reads for 2012 begin here..

1. Camptown Ladies by Mari SanGiovanni 4 stars
2. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer 2 stars

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I decided to re-post my favorite reads of 2011 from my last thread:

1. The Night Circus & The Dovekeepers share first place.
They are completely different books and I loved them both.

2. A Trick of the Light stands alone at number two.. I loved it

3. Mama Day is wonderful. I loved it from beginning to end.

4 Barn Dance is a little book that spoke to me, and I know it will make
most of you say HUH?

5. Beneath the Hallowed Hill was as good as Under the Stone Paw, I love this author.

6. I'm Over All That, because I madly love Shirley MacLaine and all of her books..

7. Charlie St. Cloud see note on #4 :)

8. The Cat's Table was wonderful, a good story

9. Coffee with Thunderbolts by one of our own 75'ers, Marianne Petrino. I have read
several of her books .. loved them.. but this is my favorite :) you should give her a try!

10. Susan Wittig Albert China Bayles books. I read several this year and
had fun with each and every one, so the China Bayles books take spot # 10.

From the current Louise Penny newsletter:

In the winter/summer of 2011, I wrote the eighth book in the Gamache series. It's set in a monastery and explores issues of community, of the Divine, of faith in God and in our fellows. Of how we communicate. The power of music, and the power of silence.

It's about belief. And is called THE BEAUTIFUL MYSTERY.

I finished it, and turned THE BEAUTIFUL MYSTERY in to the publishers at the end of the summer.

>59 cameling: You have time, Caro. The Beautiful Mystery won't be out until Fall. Of course, you're actually being quite sensible...delaying giving yourself a peak read experience, a deathless immersion into the glory of Three Pines, until the next one is only a short time away. Most of us weren't so sensible, and look at the agonies we suffer instead!

Sorry to interrupt all the hilarity with a comment about books, but I just got a review copy of Queen of America and based on your comment, I'm thinking it doesn't need to hop on the top of the pile? Do I need to read Hummingbird's daughter first? Just wondering....

Hi Terri.. I agree, busy days here...
Sandy... Have I found you yet? yeesh! hard to keep track, if you don't mind linking me if I haven't posted?
So hard to remember who I have found ..
Hello Robert! Welcome to my hilarious thread :) lol

Tina..that is a good question. I would say absolutely. For one thing, Hummingbird's Daughter is the better book, and so wonderful, I think it is a do not miss. Queen of America ended up being a good book... and it is the completion of the story begun in Hummingbird's Daughter.

Berly... I envy you... while I have them all for re-reading, the discovery was wonderful..
they get better as they go on, you know... so you are in for a treat.

Stas, quite welcome :) you should follow her on fb... I love her posts there.. and she tells about all sorts of things that happen in her own personal Three Pines. The down side is that you might become so envious, that you can hardly bear to read.. ( like me ) sigh

No reading again yesterday. What with this and that and talking to all of my kids again, it just didn't happen. Today maybe? I sure hope so .

Good Morning Kath! I'm sorry I didn't by yesterday, it was a very crazy day in our house. It also felt like it lasted a year! I'm just making my rounds this morning before I start my day. Oh, it should be a blissful day: The law office is closed and since I'm only part-time I'm not going to faculty meetings. WillWill is off with my MIL and Whitney is spending all day grading. That means I will be having my own read-a-thon and video-game-a-thon! :D

I hope you have such a blissful day! I need to go make some coffee. . .

Public Notice

My sister has a direct link to the sleep center of my brain.
Any, and I mean ANY time I try to nap in the afternoon .. She calls.
She does this without fail ... I have not tried to read-nap for at least
a month.. and she did it again. Even if she is out and about she will..
as she did this time.. use her mobile to call and talk just long enough to
ensure that I am not going to get to napping point again. Then she hangs
up.. having imparted nothing of import.. just calling to call. WAHHH!

That is all..

88mckait
Jan 2, 2012, 3:20 pm

Kath, when you're about to take a nap, put your phone on silent mode.... until you wake up.

90mckait
Jan 2, 2012, 3:27 pm

That is a great idea :) The thing is.. I never plan to nap.. it is more a
sudden dip into napping as my book falls into my lap, you know?
:PPPP Even if she hasn't called for three days ( ok.. I am exaggerating
that never happens ) she will call if I begin to doze.. :(

91FAMeulstee
Jan 2, 2012, 3:45 pm

> 87: I know about direct links, my mother used to have that with me, whenever I felt sick or ill, she would call. And she was the LAST one I wanted to talk to... Took more than 10 years of marriage to get rid of it. Not completely, but now Frank pics up the phone when I don't feel well and if he is not at home I don't pick up the phone...

92mckait
Jan 2, 2012, 4:28 pm

You are a wise woman, Anita!

93cameling
Jan 2, 2012, 4:40 pm

Ahh... in that case, put your phone on silent when you start to read. Then even if you don't fall asleep, at least you'll have uninterrupted reading time.

I've gotten good at not answering the phone at home when it rings. Most of the time, it'll be a telemarketer (and who wants to talk to them?!) or it'll be for the hubster. Occasionally it'll be for me, and if I don't pick up, they leave VM and I can call back .. when the hubster retrieves the messages. Yup, i don't do that either. I have my mobile phone with or near me almost always and people who need to get in touch with me will text or call me.

94Matke
Jan 2, 2012, 7:36 pm

Evening, Kath.

Hate, hate, hate it when the phone rings and I'm lying down. Sometimes I even unplug the phone; if it's family and important, they'll call on the cell...

It is sooooo crazy on LT in the 75'ers right now. Can barely keep up; it'll slow down soon, I think.

We had hot dogs and beans for supper, can you believe it? Dh had cottage cheese (urg) and beets (yum) for a "salad." Just had no ambition or imagination for cooking tonight. Did have some boiled shrimp as an appetizer thing.

Tired, too. New year is sort of not helping.

95gennyt

Happy New Year, Kath. The new Louise Penny sounds interesting; I'm still waiting for A Trick of the LIght to come out over here.

96mckait
Jan 2, 2012, 8:04 pm

Good ideas all..and I thank you :)

Caro.. I almost never have my cell phone anywhere near.. it lives in my handbag.

Gail.. No reason not to have simple food sometimes.. it is filling.. it is easy and fine...
no guilt allowed ! Cooking is something I enjoy less and less as the years pass... I do a lot
more of it than I want to. We have to eat. I try to cook things that last a couple of days when I can...

Oh Genny, Happy New Year to you !.. I am so sorry that you have to wait! One downside of being there I guess... but it will be there eventually. And you still have it to look forward to !

97alcottacre

Kath - I'm wondering if our sisters are related. My sister always seems to call whenever I am putting Will down, either for a nap or bedtime. And she will call every number she knows to try to reach me!

Other than the napping interruption, I hope you had a good day!

Relatives...

102richardderus
Jan 2, 2012, 11:15 pm

It's not even my *relatives* who do that with me...I have one friend who calls and, if (as is my wont) I don't pick up, he'll call *every*ten*minutes* until I do, alternating numbers.

It's nice to be worried over, I suppose, but YE GODS JUST LEAVE IT! After 24hrs, *then* worry!

ellie! It has been ages since you visited... Happy New Year back !
The video is a hoot, thank you :)
Gotta wonder if he is really a reader? I think I will book mark it and play it really
loudly at appropriate times...

Berly.. yeah..

Brit.. well I lived through losing my nap :) I don't even try very often, but it has been a long
few weeks.. and I was actually warm and almost comfy... so... Isn't it annoying to be stalked?
Funny thing is.. when we are out together, even for 2-3 hours she gets at least 2-3 calls on her
cell and she complains about why can't they leave her alone!

If she calls and I avoid her , I always call her back asap so she doesn't worry...
I know I worry about my kids if I don't get a call back or a message back.. so I try to
be thoughtful. She also has a knack of calling when I am on with a friend. Usually she doesn't call me until evening when our stepdad has gone home from her house... and her daughter has gone back to her house.. but if I am on the phone, she will call nearly every time.. weird huh? For reasons explained above
I have to take her call, and she gets angry that I am on the phone. sigh.

Okay, it is 20F out there and snowy... and I dislike.

I am nearly finished with Camptown Ladies and it is a good on. Not as good as the first book ( this one is a sequel) and she will be writing another one soon, dedicated to her partner who passed away this
year. ( she told me that in a message on fb) and so it is good to know the saga will continue..
the first one had me ROFLMAO. This one has had me LOL a few times.. still good fun.

It's cold (19F), clear, and windy here. Walking the dog took 1/2hr prep, 1/2hr walk, then collapse still bundled up in front of the open fridge to warm up in its balmy breezes. I like cold, just not this cold. I think 25-30F should be the bottom of the legally permissible temperature scale, and a maximum of 79F. Planet-wide. Who's with me? Let's petition the UN! It's a global human rights issue!

regarding phone calls.... I have caller ID, if you call and I don't pick up leave a message. If you don't it means it's not important. If you cont. to call without leaving a message your just being annoying and I will shut ringer off :P That's how I deal.

38 here this AM with the wind it feels like 32 :) :) AND no snow! My puppies were cold when they went out this morning.

Why do we panic when the phone rings!
"Who is that!"

Well today it was someone wanting to sell us curtains for our new Conservatory. I don't want curtains in my new Conservatory but they insist on wasting my time and theirs and so Mrs. Tortoise made an appointment for tomorrow. What for?!

I am not NOT going to buy curtains for the new Conservatory. I hope!

Gail.. my sister means well.. she does.. it is just frustrating sometimes.
I dare not call her and interrupt her visits her shows, her cooking etc..
or she is annoyed. But If I tell her that I am on the phone or busy.. she
is annoyed. But she means well. I keep telling myself that.

rdear.. where do I sign! I am so in!

kara.. I usually answer when someone calls.. or at the V least return the call
promptly. I don't even mind not finding a message, because my newfangled phone
tells me that they called and when, which makes me feel sure that they had something to say..
even if only hello. Congrats on the chilly weather!

Alan.. I myownself am a huge fan of curtains...
They can be opened or closed or create atmosphere or keep out
sun or cold or dark .. or keep in cozy..

Kath : Before you start reading, leave an answering message to greet all callers saying that you are currently unavailable and do not wish to be disturbed. If they will please leave a message, you will call them back. Then unplug the darn phone. You may want to tell your sister (ahem...she seems to have stalker tendencies.) that if she calls and hears this message, stop calling... you are napping and will call her back.

#120: But do they tell you what they're doing in the washroom when you call? A friend not only brings her phone with her to the bathroom, but when she answers, will tell me she's in the bathroom and why she's there! Waaaaay TMI !

So, reading my strong resistence, he said he wanted to clean out his closet. I reminded him it was quite cold out, closet is on outside wall, and all the "stuff" in there was serving as good insulation. He took the bait! Phew! That was a close call. Kath, don't you find there is a difference, however, between "cleaning" and "reorganizing"? One is daily drudgery, but the other is actually accomplishing something, as you dig into a pile or a drawer or a cabinet and actually CHANGE it.

Caro... interesting.. I was a fan of Lou's. and he was a neighbor. His bio will probably say that he
grew up in Pittsburgh, but fact is that he grew up in Harmony Twp.. which is a fancy way to say
the upper part of Ambridge or Ambridge Heights. My hometown. Back in the day he was often found
walking the streets of the once cozy little town turned into gangland with empty storefronts as it is today.
The combination of the mall and the loss of Steel killed it , as did many towns along the Ohio. So sad.

Tom..
where the heck are you from that you know those places?

rd... of course I am an Elvis fan.....

Lynda and Marianne... Elvis for you, too?
I am an unashamed fan...

I hope you all enjoyed that little game..
a friend tried it on fb and I thought it was fun..

I would love to chat with you about the book, Kath. Maybe some time next week? I am working the weekend and I will have to pull out my copy.

ok.. I told Dan yesterday to call his sister
( I will refrain from adjectives ) because I had a feeling she was lying
on the floor in trouble. He, of course said ....later. But she called....
wanted to know why we had not delivered her game on wednesday...
answer? she didn't answer the phone. so..
Anyway.. 3:30 am ( I need to work on my time )she called and woke me and told me that she had passed out
while getting ready for bed.. and has no idea how long she was lying on the floor..
she thought she had a mini stroke ( she thinks that all the time so?)
Long story short.. I asked her of Dan has a key ( no)
and she won't give him one because she doesn't want people waling into her house...
She said I should just hang around the house today in case she needs me and she will call if she does..

seriously?

I will go about my business of course, I need to pick up Salad fixings and some
steak for tomorrow for Amy.. and I have a party later. Dan can check up on her
when he goes to work and delivers the package..

sigh

It's probably just me then, Kath. I am terrible at the maintenance/cleaning stuff--hanging things up, putting them back where they belong on a daily basis--but I love digging into chaos and restoring order. Been like that since I was a little girl and first had my own room--would let it devolve into utter chaos and then have an orgy of re-arranging and organizing. To each their own, right?

Chiming in on the birthday song thingie--Cee, I agree with Richard about Margaret Whiting--wonderful singer!

Mine is Ticket to Ride by the Beatles. Works for me. Good tune.

Kath, I hope that your sister-in-law will be seeing a doctor about her blackout...sounds serious. Even if she is a hypochondriac, people don't just pass out for no reason, right?

I am in agreement with Roni on organizing being different than day-to-day cleaning chores. Definitely more of a sense of accomplishment with organizing.

Have a fun time tonight! I just found out that I don't have to go to rehearsal tonight, so more time to hang out with hubby! Yay!

Please forgive me for not mentioning everyone by name..
I feel forlorn :( Amy has left. It is so good when they arrive, but
not so good whey they go.

Thank you for keeping my thread warm, my friends.. I appreciate it!

The weekend was good, too short of course but good.
We exchanged our Christmas gifts ~
Amy and I spent some time at My nieces house.. as Amy had a gift for him..
and she wanted to see the family.. who showed up en masse for the visit.
Walter, my Stepdad is looking so frail :(

Then we came home and just hung out and watched some football :PP and a movie..
Mama Mia, which had me sobbing ..sigh.. bad choice..

oh, and I hope the tournament went well for you, Brit..
and Caro.. I am old fashioned. I just don't feel like the floor
is clen if I don't get up close and personal once in a while. I used to do it every week
but I am getting better ant skipping, sometimes for weeks.. and just using the Swiffer Wetjet
:)

Amy is on the road.. I wil be glad when she is safe home.

I didn't think I would but I finally caved and watched the movie on the plane during one of my trips and loved it, Kath. Crying is so uncool on the plane, but nobody told me it was going to be a heart-wrencher.

Then again, i watched Up on the plane and also sobbed. I seem to have a penchant for picking movies that tug on the old heartstrings when I am on a plane. *sigh*

Thanks for the heads up about Extremely Close and Incredibly Loud, Kath. Your review is similar to that of a friend's ... so I might move this one down on my TBR Tower and keep it for the day when all libraries are closed, I'm snowed in, and all the other books in my house have gone up in flames.

rd.. smart move. I should have been that discerning from the beginning. I kept hoping it would be better soon or be stolen by a ring of book thieves ..

Darryl, I hate to agree with jude about this book, but she is right. Besides.. why should you
be off the hook when other have fallen? muhahahahah

Jude.. or hated others that others have liked a lot? *grin*

Brit.. it is better to have realistic expectations. I am not a sports person, but I think
that rabid win win win parents or coaches are harmful. One can only do what they can do
and I think that goes for sports too.. I hope your kids get better and better as they play in the
good atmosphere that you provide them. hugs back sweet friend....

Lynda.. I know that was part of it.. and thank you for understanding that. I found it difficult to
write the review and not sound offensive to someone. I am not always up to date on politically correct language.. and frankly find it baffling at times. These kids.. these people.. with special needs are just people imo..to be accepted as they are.. but realistically like I feel about sports I guess. One can do what they can do and that goes for everyone of us .. and I sometimes feel that all of this expectation for using the current perfect descriptive word actually makes some people less able to see them simply as people, neighbors, kids, and friends.. the focus ends up being kicked off center.. off the person .. and let me tell you this was just as hard to say.. no offense intended to anyone.

Also I just hated the book.
:)
