There a slight chill in the air, the season is starting to change and we are really getting to those series and sequels. It's time for a second thread.

Here is a sample of what some of us have read:

Lets keep up the great reading!

Here's a few I've done.

I've reviewed the short, punchy noir novella Drive by James Sallis in my thread...post #299.

It's the first of a series featuring anti-hero Driver, a stunt driver (!) who moonlights as a getaway driver. Hijinks, by which I mean crimes, ensue.

I'm happy to see the Series and Sequels wiki is coming in useful.

It's fairly self-explanatory, but feel free to improve it!

Thank you to whoever did the editing for the Westerfeld series. I was fiddling around with it for half an hour trying to figure out how to do exactly what you did! So great to have techy people around. :)

No problem. I just played around with it (as Madeline is always advising) and previewed before I saved it.

And got a bit of help from the Help:Editing wiki. http://www.librarything.com/wiki/index.php/Help:Editing

To start a new line in the wiki, you seem to have to hit return twice.

Thanks so much for setting up the September Series and Sequels Wiki, Humouress.

I hope everyone adds their books to the wiki, if you need any help or have any questions just ask here and one of us will jump to your aid.

This is a great way to see what everyone is reading at one glance, and a fantastic aid in seeing what series you may want to add to your wishlist.

How do you see your own wiki page?? I didn't even know you could do that!

11humouress
Sep 14, 2012, 12:59 pm

Go down to the bottom of this (or any LT page) and click on 'WikiThing' (in the middle of the second last line, above the copyright line)

On that page, in the green box on the left, you should see 'Your WikiThing' at the bottom of one of those lists (going from memory, here). Click on that, and you're in!

The first time you click the link, the page doesn't actually exist, so you get kicked to the edit page. Once the page exists, it should take you directly to the page from then on. A link to a page that doesn't exist is shown in red, which is changed to blue once it's real.

In digging through packing boxes, to no surprise, I found a box of books I had been looking for that had a book I wanted to read. So last night I started reading Damned Good Show. This is the last in the RAF series by Derek Robinson. I hope it is better than the second book. Good Clean Fight was pretty bad. Or at least I didn't enjoy it. Maybe all the trauma involved in moving affected my ability to enjoy the book, but I just didn't like the humor, or the characters.

I am also still listening to Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag and am enjoying it, but still wondering what all the fuss is about this series. They are good, but not that much better than many other mysteries I have read.

Somebody on the previous thread mentioned how sucked in they were by the George R. R. Martin series Game of Thrones. I keep trying not to like these books as they are too violent or too something (but it really is the violence) in them that gets me, but I keep reading them anyway.

Sep 14, 2012, 11:06 pm

Well, that was quick. I finished Appaloosa tonight. It was just as good as Judy and cookie said it would be, too! I'll definitely be continuing with this series.

Moving on now to the second of the Dresden Files books by Jim Butcher, Fool Moon.

17cameling
Sep 15, 2012, 4:38 am

I read Death of a Cozy Writer by GM Malliet, the first of the St Just series and I can rightly say that I'm definitely going on the look out for the next in this series which reads much like an Agatha Christie mystery.

18humouress
Sep 15, 2012, 5:11 am

I've added Dark Moon Defender, the third in Sharon Shinn's Twelve Houses series, and The Blade Itself, which is the first of Joe Abercrombie's First Law series to the wiki.

Just finished The September Society by Charles Finch. This is number two of the series and the first I have read. - Just checked - my library has the first, will be getting it out soon. Pleasant Victorian England aristocratic protagonist.

Oh, I looked at the Wiki too, and it definitely fell into the "not enough time" basket. Sorry for not participating there as well. (But it was cool to find my own Wiki page!)

Quickly read Fables: Legends in Exile, the first Fables graphic novel by Bill Willingham. I've been reading this out of order, depending on which ones we could get from the library, so it was good finding the first and putting the later stories into better context.

Continuing with Death in a Strange Country today, hoping for some solid reading time!

24avatiakh
Sep 15, 2012, 9:35 pm

I picked up Rebel Heart from the library today and am tempted to just dive straight in and ignore the other books I'm currently reading. It's the sequel to Blood Red Road.

25DeltaQueen50
Sep 16, 2012, 3:43 pm

I finished another, Heart of the Family by Annie Groves. This was the third in the author's "Campion Family" Saga which follows this Liverpool family through World War II.

26jolerie
Sep 16, 2012, 3:47 pm

I finished Sepulchre by Kate Mosse. A historical fiction about two women from different times and the mystery that connects the both of them. The general story seems very similar to her first book, Labyrinth. I think I enjoyed the latter a bit more than the former, but both were pretty good.

Onto Sisters Red, a YA book with a modern twist on the Little Red Riding Hood fairytale. Wiki has been updated. :)

27wookiebender
Sep 16, 2012, 6:23 pm

Finished Death in a Strange Country, and it was very good. I'm recommending Donna Leon to people who enjoy crime, and people who don't mind drooling all over their books with all the descriptions of food. (He eats, he drinks, he solves the occasional crime.)

Moving on to Bloodsucking Fiends by Christopher Moore, which is apparently the first in a "Love Story" trilogy. The mind boggles slightly. But a good fun opening, I'm thinking I'll enjoy this one.

28rosalita
Sep 16, 2012, 6:35 pm

Another slow reading month for me so far, but I've finished Talulla Rising by Glen Duncan and Glory in Death by J.D. Robb. I've almost finished the audio of Deception of the Emerald Ring by Lauren Willig and am about 100 pages into LEave the Grave Green by Deboarah Crombie.

Kerry- Rebel Heart is not released here until the end of October. We are jealous! I was a fan of Blood Red Road.

I'm nearly finished with my 5th S & S book, Anarchy and Old Dogs. It's the 4th Dr. Siri book and it's highly entertaining.

31cbl_tn
Sep 16, 2012, 8:47 pm

I went to a meeting at the end of the week and finished Town in a Blueberry Jam in the hotel. I listened to Started Early, Took My Dog in the car and had about an hour left when I arrived home earlier this evening. I ended up finishing the audio while I ate supper. I didn't like this one quite as well as When Will There Be Good News?, but it was still very good. It took a while for me to warm up to the reader, so the book got off to a slow start for me.

32Storeetllr
Edited: Sep 17, 2012, 12:55 am

Isn't Dr. Siri addictive?

Somehow I got sucked into a re-listen of the Millenium trilogy and have been listening to them one after the other. I'm about 1/3 through Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest and not sure what in the world I'm going to listen to next that will match up. I think I like them even better the second time around.

For a bit of a change, I picked up Devil's Bride, the first Regency romance in a series by Stephanie Laurens. I'd read some of the others in the series before but somehow missed this one.

33majkia
Sep 17, 2012, 7:40 am

Just finished Box Nine by Jack O'Connell, first in a very noir mystery series with scifi elements. Very dark but very good. Began The Alexandria Link last night, second in the Cotton Malone series by Steve Berry.

34lindapanzo
Sep 17, 2012, 12:03 pm

I finished Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce. I wouldn't necessarily consider this one a series, but since LT is listing it as such, I'll just go along with it. It was a decent read, but the you see the so called "twist" or surprise a mile away which made it rather anti-climatic. A 3 star read.

Onto, the second in the Millennium Series, The Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson.

Mamie- I may have to bump March Violets to next month. It's the only one on my main to-do list, that I'm not getting to, although I am adding 2 or 3 others, I didn't expect.

44benitastrnad
Sep 18, 2012, 9:21 pm

The Virgil and Everett series by Robert B. Parker is really good. The first one Appaloosa was made into a movie that starred Rene Zellwiger and some famous actor, whose name I can't remember. Somebody who first name was Edward. I listened to the recorded version of the books and really liked them. They were narrated by a guy with the perfect Western voice. He sounded much like Sam Elliot. Come to think of it perhaps the reason why I liked them so much might have been that man's voice on the recorded books.

45rosalita
Sep 18, 2012, 9:55 pm

Mamie, I think you will like the series. I would too if I was reading it, but clearly I am not. :-)

Benita, the actors in the movie version of Appaloosa were Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen, I think. I haven't seen the movie, but I'd like to.

Yes, those were the actors in the movie of "Appaloosa" and the film was very good. Now when I read that series, those actors are exactly the way the picture the characters, certainly not a hardship at all!!

I just finished another book for September S&S - At The Crossing Places by Kevin Crossley-Holland is the second book in his YA Arthur Trilogy and, unfortunately, this book wasn't nearly as well done as the first.

I'm almost embarrassed to add my first in a series by E L James. Serious readers everywhere will smirk at this fluff but I'm not too shy to put it in as I'm about to start the second in the series. (Friends keep giving them to me, what am I to do?)

Something I'm happy to include on the wiki is Penny's 2nd in the Three Pines series A Fatal Grace.

Just a quick note on the wiki. I moved the table of contents to the side* so that we don't have to scroll down so much to get to the actual content. Navigating from the TOC should take no more scrolling than the previous layout. I also put in links back to this thread and the first at the top of the page to make it easier to navigate back and forth. If folks don't like the changes, it's easy to go back.

*For those who care about the technical details, I added two lines at the top. One removes the TOC from the body of the wiki page. The other applies the "group" template, which has the TOC built into the page at the side. Going back is accomplished by taking these two lines back out.

I seem to have slowed right down with my reading these past few days though I've finished another in the Canongate Myth series, Lion's honey is a great look into the biblical story of Sansom, not a retelling as most in the series are but an indepth exploration into the who and why of Sansom.

I've also finished the first of two children's books about Stuart Horten, Horten's Miraculous Mechanisms: Magic, Mystery, & a Very Strange Adventure (alt. UK title is Small change for Stuart).

I've also finished my audiobook, Pandora's Star by Peter F. Hamilton, the first in the Commonwealth Saga. Big story and I'm looking forward to the second book.

I'm managing to read a little of Rebel Heart each evening. It's bk2 in Moira Young's Dustland series. And the latest Jack Reacher is in transit to my library so I might have it in time for the weekend.

I finished listening to the second in the Flavia de Luce series Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag by Alan Bradley. I would review it but to put it simply - it is more of Flavia - and that is all I have to say. I will start listening to the third in the series as I find them pleasant to listen to while commuting, but I can't say I am bowled over by this series. Since I have the third one I will listen to it, but I won't make any moves to read any more of them.

>53 drneutron: ~ Jim I'm going to have to read The Strange Affair of Spring-heeled Jack just because of the title!

So I listened again to the outstanding Milennium Trilogy, this time back-to-back, and it was even better the second time around. It was so good, I stayed up many evenings way past my bedtime to listen to "just one more disc."

Also read Devil's Bride, the first in a series of a Regency romances, for light relief between bouts of listening to the Lisbeth Salander intense thrillers.

I am trying to listen to Titus Groan but am thinking of packing it in. So far, the story has advanced approximately one hour, that being the hour surrounding the birth of the title character, and I don't care for any of the other characters who have been introduced and find the writing a bit ~ dare I say? ~ verbose. Is it worth carrying on? I must say I am one for the Pearl Rule, and for audiobooks, that's 3 discs worth of listening, which is what I have finished to date.

Next up (in print): Delusion in Death, the latest Eve Dallas mystery.
Next up (on audio): Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith.

I finished my first book by Ngaio Marsh, Colour Scheme. There are so many of the classic mystery writers that I haven't read and so I picked this one up at a library sale in 2008.

This is book number 11 of a series of 32. It was published in 1943 while WWII raged and is contemporary to the time--ie 1943-. The first book of the series was published in 1934--the last in 1982. Think of the history that occurred while this series was being written! It would be fun to read the first and the last in the series and see how things, including the protagonist, Roderick Alleyn of Scotland Yard, changed.

Here's how I stand on my original list for series in September:

✔Embroidered Truths - Needlecraft Mysteries (9)
The Alexander Cipher - Daniel Knox (1)
✔Willful Behaviour - Commissario Brunetti (11)
Devil's Food Cake Murder - Hannah Swensen (15)
✔Evil in Carnations - Flower Shop Mysteries (8)
Revenge of the Wrought Iron Flamingos - Meg Langslow Mysteries (3)
✔Buttercream Bump off - Cupcake Mystery (2)
✔The Inn at Rose Harbor - new series unnamed
Emperor's Tomb - Cotton Malone (6)
Lucifer Code - Thomas Lourds (2)

These weren't on my original list

✔The Bishop and the Beggar Girl of St. Germain - Blackie Ryan Mysteries (12)
✔Fundraising the Dead - Museum Mysteries (1)
✔Due or Die - Library Lovers Mysteries (2)

I might be able to get a few more finished before the month is done.

Cheli, as long as you posted how you've done with your original plan, here's how I've done so far:

These are ones which will fit both "September Series & Sequels" and the "Surreal September" themes:
A Winter Haunting by Dan Simmons (sequel to Summer of Night) --DONE
A Crown of Lights by Phil Rickman (#3 in Merrily Watkins series) DONE
Wings to the Kingdom by Cherie Priest (#2 in Eden Moore series) -- owned
The Gunslinger by Stephen King (#1 Dark Tower series) -- available at local library
Disco for the Departed by Colin Cotterill (#3 in the Dr. Siri series) -- owned DONE

Some others series I'm strongly considering to catch up on for September Series & Sequels:
Blue Lightning by Ann Cleeves (final book in the Shetland Quartet . . . unless she makes it a quintet, as I 've heard rumors of) -- owned
The Beautiful Mystery by Louise Penny (the latest Gamache mystery) -- at local library
The Sandburg Connection by Mark deCastrique (latest Sam Blackman mystery) -- may have to buy

And some other books to possibly continue favorite series for September:
206 Bones by Kathy Reichs (Tempe Brennan series) -- at local library
The Indian Bride/Calling Out for You by Karin Fossum (Inspector Sejir series) -- library e-book, DONE
Prayers for Rain by Dennis Lehane (Kenzie/Gennaro series) -- owned
Pardonable Lies by Jacqueline Winspear (Maisie Dobbs series) -- borrowed
Breaking Silence by LInda Castillo (Kate Burkholder series) -- library audio book DONE

Books to finish from last month:
The Dead of Summer by Mari Jungstadt DONE (e-book) -- this is part of a series, but one I WILL NOT pursue further

ALSO
Ones I didn't plan:
Shut Your Eyes Tight by John Verdon (e-book library download)DONE
The Devil's Star by Jo Nesbo (audio book library download) DONE
Final Approach by Rachel Brady (AUDIO download) DONE

Didn't have a plan, so nothing to update. Just winging my way along here. :)

I finished Bloodsucking Fiends and it was pretty good fun, but the main female character and the romance never really rang true to me.

I'm now juggling two books, but they're different enough to not clash (I hope): In Dubious Battle for the Steinbeckathon, and Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson. I may be some time with the latter (~900pp), so I think it might be the last S&S read for me this year!

I finished The Girl Who Played with Fire and was just a tiny bit disappointed with the second in the series. I think if the book was a bit shorter, and the resolution wasn't as drawn out as much, I would have been more captivated.

Onto my 6th book for this month, Toby Alone. What a wonderfully imaginative book so far. Reminds me a lot of the time spent growing up with the Roald Dahl books!

Here's my original list updated to reflect what I've read:

The Beautiful Mystery (Chief Inspector Armand Gamache) by Louise Penny
Belshazzar's Daughter (Cetin Ikmen) by Barbara Nadel
The Black Mountain (Nero Wolfe) by Rex Stout
The Blood Detective (Blood Detective) by Dan Waddell
Buttercream Bump Off (Cupcake Mystery) by Jenn McKinlay
Death of a Cozy Writer (St. Just Mystery) by G. M. Malliet
Decaffeinated Corpse (Coffeehouse Mysteries) by Cleo Coyle
A Duty to the Dead (Bess Crawford) by Charles Todd
The Estate of the Beckoning Lady (Albert Campion) by Margery Allingham
Grave Consequences (Emma Fielding) by Dana Cameron
The Master Quilter (Elm Creek Quilts) by Jennifer Chiaverini
Now May You Weep (Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James) by Deborah Crombie - STARTING THIS ONE TODAY
Scotched (Liss MacCrimmon Scottish Mysteries) by Kaitlyn Dunnett
The Shape of Water (Commissario Montalbano) by Andrea Camilleri
Stealing Lumby (Lumby) by Gail Fraser
Yankee Doodle Dead (Death on Demand) by Carolyn Hart

I've read several things that don't fit this category. I've got one NetGalley series book that I may add to this list. I am almost positive that I won't make it to every book here. I'm thinking that the order of my next 3 series reads from here by author are: Crombie, Allingham, Fraser. If I still have time for another series book in September, I will probably add the NetGalley book after that.

I've got one non-fiction in process (my ER book) and another non-fiction book (a NetGalley title) that aren't series books to complete before long because of deadlines.

ETA: I almost forgot that I have a book on hold at the library. I'll have to pick it up on Monday which is the last day it's on hold for me.

Finished Still Life by Louise Penney, and while I'm not love-love-loving it, I think it's worth trying the next book or two in the series. And I've started reading Flood by Stephen Baxter, which is looking good so far.

I had knee replacement surgery on September 10, and had expected to do a lot of reading, since I have to spend hours a day lying down with my leg up or in a machine that moves it back and forth. But I've found that I keep falling asleep when I try to read - or listen to - a book. I imagine the first week it was the trauma of surgery, and now it's the narcotics. I hope I haven't permanently lost my brains!

Terri - I liked Penny's books 1 and 3 the best so far, book 2 did not do it for me either. I have book 4 waiting in the wings.

When I recovered from my hip surgeries (bi-lateral, two surgeries, 5 years apart) I found reading actual books to be hard. I watched TV, and fell asleep, read magazines, and fell asleep, ate, and fell asleep. Don't be too hard on yourself. Recovery does not take forever.

I hope you are able to read the next Louise Penny book and enjoy it.

I forgot to mention here (except for crossing it off my list) that I finished the first in the Emily Locke series by Rachel Brady, Final Approach. I listened to it on audio. So with September coming to an end pretty soon and me needing to finish my ER book, this is my final list of completed books:

2061: Odyssey Three by Arthur C. Clarke (3/4) ★★★
Sepulchre by Kate Mosse (2/3) ★★★★
The Girl who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson (2/3) ★★★
Behemoth by Scott Westerfeld (2/3) ★★★★
Lament by Maggie Stiefvater (1/2) ★★★½
Toby Alone by Timothee De Fombelle (1/2) ★★★★¼
Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce (1/2) ★★★

Not a bad month, considering two of those books were over 700 pages. My favourite read of the month would have been Toby Alone. What a magical book that combines a great message and a story that is charming for both adults and children alike! :)

I just finished Great Tales from English History (Book 2) by Robert Lacey. I seem to be on a roll. Finished Damned Good Show by Derek Robinson, the third in his RAF series. This one was better than the second Good Clean Fight but the two of them together make me wonder what I liked so much about Piece of Cake. I guess it goes to show that times change and readers change. I loved Piece of Cake and have had this series on my TBR list for so long, and upon reading the other two in the series I found myself wondering what I ever liked about the first one. Moral of this story is - don't wait to finish a series. Read as many as you can the first time, while you are still enamored with the author and the story. If you wait too long you will only see the flaws in the thing.

This will be my last series book for this month. Now it is on to finish the monster book for Mark's group read.

I haven't managed a single series read yet in September, and at this rate am unlikely to do so - though I've read lots in the preceding few months!

But I have been alerted to the existence of the FictFact website thanks to this thread, and have set up an account - and spotted quite a few familiar names on there too among users! I've only added a few of my series so far, I can see this will be useful and another great way to procrastinate when I'm meant to be working! I haven't explored it in detail yet - does anyone know if there is a way of setting preferences so that, for example, it shows the UK rather than US title of books where these vary?

Genny, I started following you on FictFact, my sign-on over there is 'jelsie'.

I've been reading a few series books, unfortunately most haven't been from my planned reads. Just rushed through A wanted man, the latest Jack Reacher. There are over 900 holds for it at my library so I felt that I should give it priority over other books I have out. I've finished The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ which is part of the Canongate myth series and continuing with another from the series, Ragnarok: the end of the Gods by A.S. Byatt.

Sep 26, 2012, 8:33 pm

I just finished the second in the Dave Gurney series, Shut Your Eyes Tight. I like the Gurney character. He's a retired NYPD detective who does not know how to be retired. It simply isn't the way he's wired. His wife is his total opposite, and drives him (and this reader) crazy.

In this case, he's asked to work as a "consultant" in the murder of a woman who was decapitated on her wedding day. It's a complex case with more loose ends than a shag rug.

These Gurney cases always seem to have an element of something that simply cannot be, at least at first glance. In this one, the solution seemed a little implausible to me at first, then I went back and read some things carefully . . . OK. Good, suspenseful read.

I finished Persepolis and was surprised at what a great, insightful read it was.

Here's my original list with my final September progress. I'll read at least one more book, but it doesn't fit this category. It's for my Europe challenge. I've also got a couple of children's books I want to read for a project if I can fit them in before the end of the month.

The Beautiful Mystery (Chief Inspector Armand Gamache) by Louise Penny
Belshazzar's Daughter (Cetin Ikmen) by Barbara Nadel
The Black Mountain (Nero Wolfe) by Rex Stout
The Blood Detective (Blood Detective) by Dan Waddell
Buttercream Bump Off (Cupcake Mystery) by Jenn McKinlay
Death of a Cozy Writer (St. Just Mystery) by G. M. Malliet
Decaffeinated Corpse (Coffeehouse Mysteries) by Cleo Coyle
A Duty to the Dead (Bess Crawford) by Charles Todd - moved to October
The Estate of the Beckoning Lady (Albert Campion) by Margery Allingham
Grave Consequences (Emma Fielding) by Dana Cameron - moved to October
The Master Quilter (Elm Creek Quilts) by Jennifer Chiaverini - probably October
Now May You Weep (Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James) by Deborah Crombie
Scotched (Liss MacCrimmon Scottish Mysteries) by Kaitlyn Dunnett
The Shape of Water (Commissario Montalbano) by Andrea Camilleri
Stealing Lumby (Lumby) by Gail Fraser - moved to October
Yankee Doodle Dead (Death on Demand) by Carolyn Hart - I quit worrying about this one because I realized I'd already read it.

I guess I made it through 11 series & sequels reads.

#103 by @streamsong> It's beautifully haunting isn't it? Especially since there are generations (including mine for a large part) that only know Iran, and Tehran especially, as a hotbed of Islamic extremism and political oppression where it was once such a lovely, modern Islamic culture that drew travelers from all over the Western world.

If you haven't seen the movie, I highly recommend it as well.

I know this is a bit weird but of the 5 books in this series I have read book 5 and now book 2. My daughter gave me book 5 last year for mother's day, and this one was given to me by my father-in-law as he loved it so much he went and bought the hard cover to keep on his bookshelf (I received the paperback). Adding my congratulations with everyone else's, Roni. And congratulations to everyone, who did great jobs reading.

>117 DeltaQueen50:: I was going to ask what everyone would like to do with the wiki. You're more than welcome to keep adding to it, of course.

Well done Roni! That's some achievement, meeting 100% of your target - something I almost always fail to do, no matter how small the target to begin with. And yours was not small!

I thought I was going to be able to report that I had managed (unusually) to read no series or sequels at all in September, and perhaps win a booby prize... But then I realised that one of my reads, Queen Lucia, is actually part of a series of sorts, so my total is one!

But the best thing that came out of this themed month for me was signing up on the FictFact website and getting lots of my series added on there. So next time we have a series and sequels month, or when I finally get round to listing my series in my thread, I'll find it much easier to be organised and know which book is coming up next. Now I just need FictFact to display in an obvious way which books I need to acquire next, not just which one is next up to be read...

Oh my - there has been some great series and sequel reading. Almost ashamed to admit how few I managed:)

Of eight books read in September only three were part of series.

Ark by Stephen Baxter (2 of 2)
The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon by Richard Zimler (1 of 4)
The Magician King by Lev Grossman (2 of 2)

Congratulations to Roni for reading everything she intended to this month - very impressive!

My final tally (not surprisingly, every book but one read this month was a part of a series)

A Shadow of Summer - Daniel Abraham
The Beekeeper's Apprentice - Laurie R King
Box Nine - Jack O'Connell
The Alexandria Link - Steve Berry
Old Man's War - John Scalzi

I enjoyed every one. Still reading The Bonehunters so alas can't count for September.

I read four series books this month. Three were also books I have had on my shelves for some time.

Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley - 1st in the Flavia deLuce Mysteries
Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag by Alan Bradley - 2nd in the Flavia DeLuce Mysteries
Both of these were audio versions of the books.

A Good Clean Fight by Derek Robinson - 2nd or 3rd in the RAF trilogy
Damned Good Show by Derek Robinson - 2nd or 3rd in the RAF trilogy (depending on how you decide the order, publication date, or chronology of the story)

I should finish the Red Herring Without Mustard the 3rd in the Flavia deLuce mysteries this week, but that won't be in September. All-in-all not a bad month for me.

I too am wildly impressed by Roni's accomplishment. I did not make a target list, knowing I was unlikely to come anywhere near reading everything on it, due to both procrastination and book promiscuity, two huge faults of mine. Also because my booklust is always greedier than my reading time allows.

So, here are my Series and Sequel reads for September:

The Fifth Woman by Henning Mankell (Kurt Wallender mystery series)

The Girl in the Steel Corset and
The Girl in the Clockwork Collar by Kady Cross (YA steampunk series)

Talulla Rising by Glen Duncan (sequel to The Last Werewolf)

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,
The Girl Who Played with Fire and
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest by Stieg Larsson (The Milennium Trilogy)

Devil's Bride by Stephanie Laurens (Cynster Regency romance series)

Delusion in Death by J.D. Robb (Eve Dallas mystery)

Fire from Heaven by Mary Renault (Alexander the Great trilogy)

Thanks for organizing this, DeltaQueen! Such fun, and a great way to discover new series.

Okay, so here is the list of what I completed this month. I am also "wildly impressed" with Roni's list and with her presentation. And I am loving Mary's reference to her "book promiscuity" - totally stealing that!!

Killing the Tinkers by Ken Bruen (Jack Taylor series)
The Magdalen Martyrs by Ken Bruen (Jack Taylor series)

Death Without Company by Craig Johnson (Walt Longmire series)

The Last Werewolf by Glen Duncan

The Devil's Hearth by Phillip DePoy (Fever Devilin series)

March Violets by Philip Kerr (Berlin Noir)

Naked in Death by J. D. Robb (Eve Dallas series)

Ah, I finally caved and registered for FictFact. I only entered one series so far, and already found 2 LTers listed as following it.

eta to add no, make that 3 obvious LTers.

I didn't really plan out my reading for series & sequels in September, but I'm pretty pleased with how it all turned out. Here's the final tally:

* I read all four books in the Virgil Cole/Everett Hitch series of Westerns by Robert B. Parker: Appaloosa, Resolution, Brimstone, and Blue-Eyed Devil.

* I read Books 6 & 7 in the adorable-dragon Temeraire series by Naomi Novik: Tongues of Serpents and Crucible of Gold.

* I read Books 1-5 of the Dresden Files urban fantasty series by Jim Butcher: Storm Front, Fool Moon, Grave Peril, Summer Knight, and Death Masks.

* I read the first book in the Will Trent series by Karin Slaughter: Triptych.

All in all, not too bad! Thanks for putting the thread together, Judy. And thanks to humouress for the wiki, which I need to finish adding my books to.

OK; let's wiki away! (By the way, I think we'll have to limit it to September reading, because it's starting to take a while to load.)

Go to the wiki.
On the right hand side is the alphabetical list of authors currently on the wiki. Either click on one of them, or on the first letter of your author to get to the right place in the wiki.
Click 'edit' on the right to insert whatever. If you hover over the edit buttons, you should be able to see which section it edits, so you can open the whole section for that letter, or fine tune by author / series.

The easiest way is to copy (layout etc) from other lines, when you're in edit.

Four equals signs will get you the heading for authors, and five ===== will give you the heading size for series. (Once you've put =s, it goes into the pink 'headings' box automatically, so don't worry about that)

I've made the authors all blue (mainly so they're easier to see) by putting the LT address (just go to the page and then copy the address from your browser bar) in square brackets with the author name.

Similarly, the link for each book.

A colon : at the beginning of the line indents it.

Copy the star gifs from another line, or from the top of the wiki page.

Anything else? It should be fairly easy to use; it's only the second wiki I've instigated, so I'm learning as much as you, but it's essentially just an alphabetical list. (A bit more here

Oh - and I'd always preview before you save; partly to see if what you've done is what you wanted to do, and partly because 'save' doesn't always save the first time.

The fun thing about this series read is that series don't always means mysteries and it is great to find out about other kinds of series and sequels. I opted to read one mystery series, actually I "listened" to them and read the last of the RAF series, which is a war novel, historical fiction, adventure series for the other one. Next year I am going to read the Mary Renault Alexander series. I have had these books on my TBR list forever. Or maybe I will do the Poldark novels, or perhaps God is an Englishman series. Oh the list for series could go on and on. Like others on here I do like to see what others are reading and what series are tickling the fancy of other readers.

Yes, Mary Renault is on my radar at the moment, too. I hadn't heard of her until recently, and now several mentions all at once!

A bit late, but I did finish reading The Golden Door by Emily Rodda last night to Mr Bear and he did enjoy it, and wants to know when we can get the second book from the library... (Yay!)

>144 Crazymamie: Mamie ~ Steal away! :) I think it's an affliction many of us here on LT share. So, how did you enjoy The Last Werewolf?

I read all of Mary Renault's historical novels back in the 70s/80s and remembered them with fondness all these years later. When I decided to reread one of them for this month's thematic challenge, I was a little afraid I would find it dated or boring or...I don't know, just not so compelling. So glad to know I was wrong! Plus, because I read them so long ago and I am now at an age where I sometimes forget by noon what I had for breakfast, I found I didn't remember it at all except, as I said, to the extent it was a book I had loved. I'll be reading the rest of the Alexander trilogy soon, and then will probably go on to reread the rest of her novels too.

Edited to correct typo.

I've posted my mega-~meh~ review of The Devil's Hearth in my thread...post #208.

It took this long to write, basically, ho-hum. Now I can revise post #61 for the final time.

This was fun, thanks Judy for putting it up!

In Sept I did finish listening to:

Bitten by Kelley Armstrong. This is the first of the Women of the Otherworld series. I found that I did not like it as much as I liked Dime Store Magic.

AND

Robert B. Parker's Lullaby by Ace Atkins which I quite enjoyed.

And I read:

Herland (First in the Herland Series) by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

The Left Hand of Darkness ( Fourth in the Hainish Cycle) by Ursula K. LeGuin

A Princess of Mars (First in Barsoom Series, John Carter Series and Martian Tales)by Edgar Rice Burroughs
