I LOVE those turkeys!! Happy new thread, Cee!

Mamie -
Me too! Thanks.
Linda -
Loki is still about the same. No closer to a diagnosis. Lost 5 pounds in the past month. We're worried - but we don't know about what yet. More tests next week.
Thanks for dropping in!

for Duncan... you have her now.. maybe take your records to her and see???
Sorry to hear your mom is having a bad spell :( no kinda good that...
Worked 8 hrs today .. long day

Wow Kath - 8 hours? I was hoping Saturday was a short day for you. Our library is not open after noon on Sat. Cheer up. Next Sat is a freebie for you ;-) Wishing you 2 days of peaceful rest.
If poop and additional blood tests reveal nothing, we will probably go to a specialist in Portland for an ultrasound.

I noticed that quite a few friends are giving thanks this month for the little things in life that they appreciate - I'll start with your thread Cee. Have a lovely weekend!

I LOVE wild turkeys. We always have a family near the house and enjoy them hugely. I think Ben Franklin was right and they should be our national bird.
12Donna828
Thanks, Cee, I am going to have a difficult time buying a dead turkey tomorrow. Tofu anyone?
Oh my, both Loki and your mother are having setbacks. Sometimes life kind of stinks, doesn't it? At least your are sling free these days. Has your rehab started?
One of my guilty pleasures is watching The Big Bang Theory. The Hitchhiker's #42 was one of the side stories in the episode I watched last night. I might have to read the darn book now. I remember my kids liked it but I couldn't find a copy when I went through the shelf of books I saved for them.
I hope tomorrow is a good day for you, Loki, your mother...and anyone else in your family that is ailing. Sending healing energy your way. ~~~~

Oh thank goodness Canadian Thanksgiving was back in October! Those turkeys looks so cute in an awkward sort of a way :)
You''ve been doing some great reading - I've either read The Space Between Us by Thrity Umrigar. I know I've read a couple of other books by her.
So sorry that Loki is not doing well and not your mom either. Hugs!

Nice shiny new thread here! Love the turkeys. I was working at the book fair at my son's school, and National Geographic has put out a new book on Angry Birds. It is a mix of real life birds with attitude and the characters from the game. There is a picture of a turkey all pissed off and he is standing straight up and he's about four feet tall and very scary! The book is a hoot and I got one to give for Christmas. Not sure yet who the lucky recipient will be...Hope Loki feels better soon.

Falling behind on my own thread :P
kath -
we will consider Sarah. This has been another strange and worrisome day. Loki refused breakfast - ate a little around lunchtime and unswallowed - gobbled up supper and good so far. Still dragging his skinny butt from one sleeping place to another. Such a sad boy.
paul -
thanks - I'm sure my weekend was indeed lovely compared to many others in this world... and I am thankful for that.
lucy -
Turkeys used to be very scarce around here 10 years ago - but now they are quite abundant. Love watching them peck their way through the woods... but we have to keep a sharp eye on the roads as they are always trying to get to the other side!
Donna -
sorry. I thought it was cute til i started thinking about it... but I will still have a hefty helping and be thankful for the sacrifice. ah geeze - I think I am making this worse.
Ellen -
Thanks :}

Congrats on the spiffy new thread, Cee. Nice photo of the turkeys. We're going to be having other stuff, too. Pasta and salad and other goodies and of course pies.
19LovingLit
Hi Cee, can I take it that those turkeys arent going to end up being your dinner soon?
Are we talking Thanksgiving here? Turkey is a popular Christmas dinner here too, but I can take it or leave it. I actually prefer seafood and a BBQ for Christmas lunch! The warmer weather helps.
This year it'll be quiet on Christmas, we are having a Christmas Eve feast instead (as well). YAY, I love that time of year.

I wish our Thanksgiving was in Oct too - it's too close to Christmas.
As I look back over the 2012 year of reading I have done, it feels like an accomplishment. There were a few slow months in there - it happens. All in all, I feel I read some fine books :-)
Thanks for the hugs...
kath -
today was ok, but I'm aiming for a Great Day! Soon I hope.
Kimberly -
LOL. Sounds like a good book :-) Do you have the will power to wait for Christmas? And if you do, will you remember where it is? Ah! To be younger and all together...
Joe -
Thanks!
Pie! yay - the best part of the holidays, imho.
Megan -
Ha! I expect to be replacing the live, chatty turkeys above with a picture of a nice plump cooked one... doesn't sound very nice of me, but we do love turkey and we only get it once a year cuz I hate all the fuss cooking it.
So, I'm guessing you don't have a Thanksgiving in NZ?
Seafood and a BBQ do sound better for a summertime holiday.
I love Christmas, too, especially if there is snow ;-)

Hi Claudia- Wow, I got a little behind over here. Nice new thread. Great turkeys. Do you have them in your area? I have not seen them in Illinois but have seen them in Wisconsin and Michigan. Gobble, gobble! You don't go to the movies often, do you? Try to see "Lincoln"! It's amazing.
22-Cee-
Mark -
Yup. Lots of wild turkeys here. A little north of here there is a vineyard and wine cellar. The owner was quite put out that turkeys love grapes!
I was just thinking about going to see Lincoln - especially after reading your thoughts on it. Calls for a "date night".

Turkey with cranberry sauce is truly one of my favorite food combos. I love Thanksgiving for this reason if not for the many others.
25mckait
So... how is Mr Loki this morning? Better I hope?
I'd like to see Lincoln. But I doubt I will go to a theater to do so, I'll just wait it out and see it on demand..
mmm cranberry sauce!

Wishing all problems are sorting themselves out or being sorted out soon..
miss you !

Hey! I'm here! YAY!
oh man. our modem died and we were without internet for a DAY and NIGHT!!! LOL It was like having no power. Sorta.
We are super lucky today. Serviceman came early and fixed us up with new modem and our service is upgraded to a faster speed :-)
As this computer guy was diagnosing, checking, and replacing - we were chatting and he admitted he doesn't use the internet except for his email to keep in touch with his daughter at school. And I'm thinking - so, you don't use the internet but you are fixing mine? weird. I guess that's Maine for ya!
Update on Loki:
He seems to be doing much better. No vomit, normal poop, some interest in life...
BUT every morning he refuses to eat breakfast!!!! What's up with that?
Have been giving him antibiotic - maybe that is helping?
We took a new stool specimen to the vet yesterday and have not heard anything yet. They have about another hour and I will be calling :P We need to get this straightened out - Thanksgiving holiday is almost here... company coming, vet closed, etc.
Wishing everyone a good day :-)

#75 Aunt Dimity and the Duke by Nancy Atherton (3.5 stars)

Fun, easy read given to me for vacation reading. This was an enjoyable romp through the countryside of England with a startling mix of old (castle ruins) and new (computers). The plot is busy and the cast of characters varied and delightful.
Thanks, Chelle!

Cee... Sometimes Duncan wants to eat in the morning, sometimes not. Dirk NEVER ate until PM and poor sweet Jess ate any time I fed her and anything...
With Duncan.. I leave some Nutro out in the mornings.. and he eats it if he wants.. or not.
That is the only "dog" food he can tolerate. I give him some protien of some sort before I go to work on late days.. like today.. so he doesn't get too hungry ( chicken or eggs or?)
Glad things are returning to normal.. his appetite might too, eventually..
glad to see you here.. gotta go get ready to go to work.

32: Way cute! Some of us were too busy today to check the threads. Right now I feel like weeping as I am so tired. I am going to bed early tonight -- and I've made the big decision to buy a pie to save what's left of my sanity! Sam's has this incredible huge pie divided into four sections: apple, cherry, blueberry, and peach! I think everyone should be happy. I know I will be.
ETA: Oops, I AM losing it. Congratulations on reading 75 books!!

Bonnie - Really? Did I notice? (probably a week later as I was catching up?) You just need to cry out!
Thanks!!! Going to see if I noticed...
ETA: crap! I missed it too :(
You need to be a bit more obnoxious - like me.

I had to go back and search for what we had not noticed and only then did I see the 75th book ;)

Sorry. I know you are quite overtired lately...
I was thinking you would be looking forward to your surgery and pain pills to get some good sleep. It's coming :-)

We have pie and cranberry and sweet potatoes.... pick up the turkey today..... I keep trying to remind everyone that we really don't eat that much and there are only four of us and that three of us are flying home Friday, so not a lot of chance to eat leftovers (though we do leave late in the aft) and they all stop and stare at me with big round eyes.
57mckait
I think Thanksgiving and Christmas turkey dinners are the best of the year. I love all the trimmings and have no problem eating leftovers for a few days... ( I need lettuce.. ) oh yeah!
I want to try making rd's brussells sprouts this hear. They look yummy.
I might leave earlyish and stop at the store on the way TO work.. maybe.

I'm glad to hear that Loki seems to be feeling better and I'm hoping the report (when you get it) from the vet is good news. I want Loki well!

Believe me. I know exactly how you feel. When I had a wisdom tooth out (general anesthesia) it was a great nap! I asked if I could have them all out - one by one - shortly thereafter for the rest. Even when I had a colonoscopy about 15 years ago, I did NOT want to wake up when it was over. I think they were talking bucket of ice water :{
Rhian -
Thanks!!!
Lynda -
I know, huh? Imagine me changing the subject back to BOOKS!
LOL
Thanks! Cool graphic.
Lucy -
That's a sticky wicket! You have to have all the real Thanksgiving stuff... but, yeah. No time to revel in the leftovers - tough one :(
Hmmm. I'm sure you'll think of something, Mom!
Kath -
I'm so glad you and RD love brussel sprouts! Takes some pressure off me if someone else out there is willing to eat them.
Good luck at the store... we went today and it was mobbed. People in every aisle! Well, it's Maine ya know. That's a mob to us.

Hi Pat and Valerie!
I will be doing NO cooking. Hard to do with one hand - but even worse, I have a very small kitchen and afraid to chance bumping my arm on anyone or anything. So, I'm staying out of it :)
Happy Thanksgiving! Hope you find your favorites on the dinner table!

It is kinda spooky isn't it? He always knows when there is an event, it seems ...
Glad to hear the kids are there.... I am feeling quite sorry for myself that none of mine are coming home.
They are all having guests.. But, I bought a turkey breast and will make that. Stuffing ( with gluten ) of course, and a wee bit of mashed potatoes. Yum.
We went to Applebee's for dinner tonight. They have 500 calorie meals that seem like more.. and
I returned a coat to Kohl's ( after work, before dinner) I now have a coat that fits. And I used Kohls' cash to get 2 sweaters for 2$ ( online )
I am not doing anything to prepare tonight... ( I usually do ) Just waiting for tomorrow...
Tired....
Have a wonderful time with your family!!! Then tell me all about it.
hugs

Good morning Cee! How are you today? I am pretty sure it's Saturday... :P
Not too much to do today, some Xmas prep stuff ( wrapping ...ugh) and prepping for mailing out.
I am catlapped and need more coffee. Dunkers won't comply.
How is Loki? Did having company perk him up? How are you? It can be enjoyably exhausting to have visiting kids, always worth it!
I will wait patiently for an update :)

Hi Joe, Kath, Mamie, Linda, Megan, Paul, Lynda, Rhian, Valerie, Ellen, Katherine, Lucy and Kimberly!
Wow - lots of visitors for Thanksgiving - Thanks for stopping by and bringing good cheer. Hope you all had a pleasant and tasty holiday.
Bridget and her family were here for the weekend - just went home tonight. What a blessing that family is to us. So good to see them all - catch up on hugs and have our meals prepared, incl Thanksgiving. All recipes were converted to gluten free, dairy free and sugar free... and we had to admit it was all a success! YUM. No pies for dessert, but I got the apple crisp I was craving :)
Loki update:
Last Tuesday we brought him in for the next step - a $200 blood test which needed to be sent out and we have NOT yet received the results. (Maybe Monday)
Wednesday he was not so great - but Thursday we were very thankful he was a happy boy.
Following his good day/bad day pattern, Friday - not so good at first but perked up. Today you would think he was totally normal.
Conclusion: We figure he just needed us to spend a bit more before he would let us off the hook for leaving him at the kennel while on vacation. Expect he will be fine now - regardless of the blood test results. (I hope. I hope.)

I know you missed having your kids around for Thanksgiving, as you do every day really... but I hope you heard from them and all are healthy and happy. I also hope you were able to rest up and get some of your equilibrium back.
We had real turkey, btw. No tofurkey. Bridget has had a hard time getting enough protein (allergic to so many things), so she occasionally breaks down and has a little meat/fish.
New coat and sweaters - ahhhh that sounds nice. Winter is almost here. I'll just be glad when I can actually get my bad arm into a long-sleeved top.
You'll be glad to know I did a good job staying out of the kitchen all weekend. All the kids had such a good time cooking Ron almost passed out when he saw the stove all messy. (Cleaning the stove is his specialty.)
The Sam and I exchanged books and recommendations :) We played Clue a million times (I think). Origami was the activity of choice this weekend. We walked the beach - the weather was gorgeous.
Mamie -
T'day was indeed wonderful here - and I'll be checking out your thread to see how your family made out for the first big celebration in GA.
You noticed! (The cooked turkey!)

That sounds fantastic :) and good for Bridget for being flexible enough for her own health.
I am happy that you had such a great time. I did talk to my kids.. and have spoken to them again since Thursday and will talk again tomorrow :) Not too much to complain about :)
Cory can do Origami ( of course, it seems he can do almost everything .. ) I would not mind learning that, to tell the truth. Maybe he can teach me at christmas ?

Don't worry about me falling over again. It is a banned activity!
The biggest problem is the unexpectedness of the whole thing. If you can't see it coming - you're sh*t out of luck.
You will have to be super careful yourself when you are trying to get around with disabled feet.
Paul -
Thanks for the holiday sentiment. It was a great family day - though I did miss seeing my other daughter who was entertaining her in-laws. Looking forward to working out something to seeing her family on Christmas - hopefully.
Lynda -
Cute graphic :-) And to think I keep saying I have NO sense of humor - and believing it. You see something I don't see ;-)
Thanks for that...
Rhian -
Thanks! If Loki keeps up his seemingly good health which started on Thanksgiving... that will be memorable enough to be especially happy and thankful for a long time.
Valerie -
This was my easiest Thanksgiving ever! A very rare treat and much appreciated :) Hope yours was wonderful too.

That's exactly what has been happening around here - more focus on animals than humans. I just hope that now Loki is acting better we don't get a poor result on his blood test and find there is actually something that needs attention. Once again - cautiously optimistic.
Hope you are getting some rest on this long weekend.
Katherine -
Thanks!
I guess the worse thing was no diagnosis for Loki meant nothing we could do to make him feel better. Felt so bad for him. A month is a long time for a dog to be sick with no answers.
Lucy -
I guess you are home by now - so, welcome back! Wondering how your feast leftovers were resolved... I just know you must have caved to those big, round, pleading eyes when discussing the menu. If you didn't, you are a stronger woman than I.
Kimberly -
Thanks for the congrats and hugs! The crying green thing was just to get attention. Didn't know it would work so well :O !
After all, I've been working on this 75 book thing all year! LOL
Think I am now caught up on my thread at least.
Oh. Day before Thanksgiving was my first PT visit. I like my PT a lot and trust her. That's big for me.
Will need to go x2 every week for 8 weeks - good grief!
While Bridget was here she gave me some gentle exercises to do for my arm. I also got a very nice neck/back massage out of it :-). Am I a lucky woman, or what?
Have done essentially no reading - way too busy playing...
Maybe tomorrow will be back on track. I think I am ready now. So much behind me that was stressful which always makes a dent in my reading... when I can't focus/concentrate.

I am very lucky. I know. I would love to get a whole body massage and will probably treat myself to one when this recovery period is over. There is a really great massage therapist in CT so I sometimes combine my family visits with this treat. I should find one around here. Someday.
Megan -
You're right. It's the small things that mean a lot. You should plan to treat yourself with a massage. You always treat those around you with love - and you need to do the same for yourself :)
Kath -
My massage note seems to have sparked a lot of interest. So, I guess there are lots of women (and men?) out there who need some relaxation and body kindness. You too, my dear friend.
Mornin' Mamie -
see below:
Today:
walk on the beach with DH, dog and hat (it's windy)
Strip and remake lots of beds
Lots of laundry (with help)
reading (i hope)
Wishing everyone a Sunny Sunday -
if not in weather, at least in heart!

Can't catch up with you because I'm so behind on everyone, having been away from LT much of the time and not visited threads in wayyyyyyyyy too long, but I wanted to say hi and that I'm thinking of you and hope you're well on the mend. xx

Thanks! Loki has had a few really good days. I really, really hope he is back to normal. He has fooled us before several times over the past month - but this seems real now.
Kimberly -
So, so windy and bitter cold at the beach today - woo! Decided not to go today. There's always tomorrow.
Laundry room was not very scenic, but warm at least ;-)
Ilana -
See? That's why I tend not to make too many plans for my days. Many times what I want to do does not coincide with what I am able to do. No beach today :P Too cold for Ron and he is the driver until my arm is better.
Nice to see you here - but never worry about keeping up on my thread. No pressure...
Ellen -
Yay! Now we all have clean underwear!
Yeah, Loki is worth it - even though it was $200 on top of the $600 we had already spent on other tests/treatments.
But now it has to stop! right?? Right?? RIGHT??!!

Right. Loki will be well and it can stop and you can even change undies 2x a day if you want
107EBT1002
Did I see on Kath's thread that Loki has pancreatitis? Abby had that many years ago. It was touch and go but she pulled through and is a healthy little bean now. Special diet, though......
108msf59
Okay, we have massages, stripping and laundry going on over here and sure I'm a fan of the first 2 but where are the books? Hmmmmmmmmmm?
109-Cee-
Yup. It does look that way, Ellen.
Loki seems to be finally (I hope - for real) getting over this. He is on a very bland diet right now - water and ID prescription dog food only. Nothing else. No doggy snacks... nothing from the table. We've always been careful about giving him good healthy stuff. Shelties have sensitive stomachs.
I'll probably never know what triggered this. Could have been something in the kennel while we were on vacation. But if it is over, that's enough for me. We'll try mixing in a bit of his regular dog food later (several days from now) and see how it goes. I'm wondering if this special diet for Loki will have to be continued or not. But we'll see. I sure hate to throw him into regression.
I was so worried cuz he was so, so sick for so long. Good to know Abby pulled through and has been healthy for years now. Good little bean!!!

Oh... ah... Hi Mark!
Books - oh yeah
currently reading:
Vale of Stars Sci-fi LT ER ebook - I'm loving it!
The Zookeeper's Wife for my RL book group, not liking it yet- 1/4 way through
Lost Antarctica - another LT ER book - loving it, very technical but readable and interesting! - 1/2 way through
trying hard to get something finished so I can start:
The Garden of Evening Mists from the library
Thanksgiving company kinda threw me off... had to play with my grands ;-)

Okay, that's better! I read/listened to The Zookeeper's Wife a few months ago and really enjoyed it. Your ER book and Lost Antarctica both sound interesting. The Garden of Evening Mists is a stunner! Enjoy!

I'm stopping by to see how Loki is doing...and to check on you as well.
I'm way behind on the threads and on lots of things in life in general. I simply am in a slump.
Congratulations on reaching the 75 challenge goal.....!

I'm hoping The Zookeeper's Wife gets better. So far it's just not grabbing me... but I think I need to get further.
I do have some good reading lined up.
Linda -
Loki update is in #109 above. Looking pretty good/ fingers crossed.
My shoulder is actually starting to ease up to the point I am not hurting every minute of every day. Dr appt tomorrow. PT on Wednesday - will last for 8 weeks. AND I'm typing with two hands much of the time now.
Hope you are feeling well, Linda. I am behind on everything too. Especially since I took time off from everything over the holiday to enjoy my daughter and her family being here. I may or may not ever catch up again. It is what it is :-}

Ah, pancreatitus. My last cat had that. I'd never seen a cat so sick. Poor Loki! I'm glad to hear you finally got a diagnosis so he will soon be on the mend.

Hi Cee,
>97 -Cee-: You always treat those around you with love - and you need to do the same for yourself
Believe me, I'd love to. If only my mum was a bit more keen on child-minding, then Id take some me-time in a heartbeat. Cant quite justify paying for childcare just to have a few hours off.
Hooray for two handed typing! (Ive been noticing the capital letters have come back)

Good morning sperm seeing woman! How are you today :)
And Loki is continuing to improve I would think? Relief isn't it? whew!
Nothing new.. too early..
I have to make a pot of chili and then go to work.. sigh. I feel like I just need to turn off my brain and charge through the week as fast as I can
.( Remember in Arsenic and Old Lace? Teddy would yell "CHARGE" and run)
Hope it's a good one..

Glad that Loki continues to mend. We always seem to have one pet on some restricted special diet (at the mo' it is a cat). Such a blessing when they are all healthy.

You are such a good, good boy going to bed on time-ish.
I am a night owl (mostly now to read) but when I worked in Portland (about an hour's drive) I HAD to go to bed on time in order to have enough energy to get to work, work all day, then drive home an hour. At the end of a long day and an hour's drive I didn't want to fall asleep at the wheel. I think it's the only time I was a good girl about bedtime.
Joanne -
Well, of the three possibilities, I'm guessing it was pancreatitis. The vet never committed to a diagnosis. He stills seems to be better. I hope it lasts a good long time.
Megan -
I can empathize. My Mom was not keen on taking my girls either. We had no extra money just for me to have some time off... so I felt a lot like you. Some women get together and watch each other's children from time to time. That gives them double duty - then a break. I was never actually able to manage that.
Kath -
A pot of chili sounds great. It'll be awhile for that as Ron would never attempt.
I went to the dr today for my shoulder. No x-rays today. She did some passive movements on my arm and was quite surprised and pleased at my progress. Of course after that activity and spending the afternoon at the GHS working on the TIDE - my arm is quite uncomfortable.
Dr said I could DRIVE!!!! I'm a bit scared. Not sure I want to do all that movement (and what if I need to move quickly?), but I can try around town for now and hope I don't end up in the woods or cove.
Lucy -
I have been way too spoiled. My pets have always been so healthy - now this. Oh well. Hope the worst is over. We'll see.
********************
PT tomorrow afternoon after spending all morning getting the TIDE out. If we get snow tonight, the TIDE won't go out tomorrow morning. I can tell you that. Too many little old ladies including me!

Glad your arm is cooperating by healing well...
Get Ron to make it and you can sit at the table directing the process ..
time some of these men learn to fry up some onions and open a few cans...
I mad mine with a pound of ground turkey, and a ton of beans.. Black, white, and red. A big jar of salsa and
some V-8 spicy..oh and a ton of the home made chili seasoning. Turned out pretty good, and low cal.. so.. I bet even Ron and Dan for that matter could do it if they put their minds to it.
eta I love reading the Tide.. it is like a tiny vacation back in time... so thank you :)

You are very welcome! I love that the tide goes all the way to your house once every 2 months. Strong moon pull! LOL

Ron is driving me - gotta run...
Hope everyone has a great day! Or peaceful night, whichever is happening for you!

Snow at last! Good news for you, not so good for readers of The Tide. Cee, I'm so happy that both you and Loki are on the mend. It's been a long haul for the two of you. That's great that you've been cleared to drive. It's a big step in the right direction.
I played lots of games at Thanksgiving, too. We may have to buy another Clue game. I think my older grandgirls would love it. I am tiring of Monopoly but I can play Yahtzee all day long!

I have to tell you - when we took out our Clue game it was so old the kids were laughing at it. We pulled out score slips with the names including my sisters first husband - about 26 years ago - or more. LOL

Ice cream - no reports coming in ???
TIDE went out and PT loaded me up with exercises.
I just live right!

Oh yeah! Capital this and capital that - can't stop me now! 2 handed typing - YAY!
Nice to see you here despite all your busy-ness. I've been so busy myself lately. Have hardly had time for LT or reading and need to peddle faster.

So busy this morning.. running hither and yon..
I have a project afoot. Then "brunch" late breakfast / lunch whatever.
Gotta get food for us both before I leave.
Then drug store and work...

I should have logically figured out that if I don't like exercise, I won't like PT. I just had a brilliant thought - heat! I'll put my heat pad on to sooth it back to thinking all is well.
Mornin' Mamie -
Oooo Oooo - pie and coffee!!!! yes, Yes, YES! No pie in the house though. I've been seeing all this pie talk lately, I'm craving some. When I was at the store yesterday I wanted a coconut cream pie, but they were all gone :P Should have made a substitution... next time I go I'll probably settle for anything sitting in a crust! Or I'll just buy a crust and eat it empty :)
Poor baby (that's me - heh) off to the ear doctor today to finish up testing started months ago (and interrupted by vacation and broken shoulder). Hope it's all good news, cuz I've had enough drama around here.
While in Portland I'm hoping to do something fun - like buy Christmas ribbon to make 100 bows for wreaths that the kids put together at school with the fire dept volunteers. Oh yeah - I'm supposed to make all those bows by Dec 6th! Eek.

Checking in - so glad PT has begun! I was very diligent and my ankle that I broke is now stronger and sturdier than the other one. There is 'good' hurt and bad hurt - so really concentrate on distinguishing. The good hurt is stretching those ligaments out again. Go for it!

Oh Cee! So sorry to hear about your shoulder ! Oh that sounds painful! Best wishes with the PT. I broke a wrist and foot about 3 years ago. My PT started the first week in December and went until February! What a hassle it was -but it was great to get the use of my wrist back. Hard work I found -but well worth it!
As for dogs - our Daisy had to be sedated on Saturday for a procedure. Anal gland obstruction and we take her in every couple of months - but still she developed the problem. ugh. Anyway, now she is on antibiotics for 10 days. Kids and dogs. Really!
When I had my broken wrist and foot I lost over 7 lbs in 12 weeks with my casts! I couldn't get myself out anywhere for treats and my husband is a real health eater. Nice side benefit - I guess! :) I so understand your need for pie! My mom would bring over treats for me - nice home backed stuff! :) And she even walked the dog!
Oh I see above where you have to go in to PT 2 x a week for 8 weeks. That was me! I was even there on the 24th of December. I did find as time went on and I made progress I was able to just go in once a week, provided I kept up all of my exercises by myself. Such a hassle!

Ugh. PT. Not fun. I do hope it helps.
I have The Zookeeper's Wife on a shelf downstairs. Someone recommended it to me. I hope it got or is getting better. And I hope you get to The Garden of Evening Mists because (IMO) it is a five-star read.
Abby was on ID cat food for years after the pancreatitis. Now our vet wants her eating wet food only (her point: you don't see her wild cousins stalking corn, do you?), but I can tell she misses her dry kibble sometimes. She's like me: she likes her carbs. :-)

Hi Deb!
I am determined to do what I can to get this arm back to normal. I can't say I will do it gracefully though. Ah well... I'm hoping 8 weeks will seem a short time. It's not the hassle of going in x2 per week that bothers me. It's doing exercises. Boring. Maybe if I get a brand new exercise outfit it'll be more fun??? :PPPPPP
A wrist AND a foot for you, huh? That's bad. Nice to have these stories in the past!
Ellen -
My RL book group is reading The Zookeeper's Wife - so, I gotta too. I think I don't like the writing style. There doesn't seem to be a plot and too many distracting offshoots. Every so often there is an impressive passage - but it seems generally disjointed to me. It doesn't flow. I'm about half way through.
Tammy -
Busy is right! Too busy, I'm afraid. This week has been hectic and next week is only slowing down a little. Makes me very tired. Went to bed at 7:30 last night and immed fell asleep!

Hi Cee, glad to hear Loki is holding his own and you are enduring PT; that's about all you can do is endure it. When I had my shoulder replacements, I did 2X a week for about 8 weeks too. It does get easier as time goes on (at least it did for me) and you must have almost a month in by now, no?
The Zookeeper's Wife was a DNF for me when I tried to read it a few years ago. I hope your next book is a 5 star read to make up for having to read Zookeeper for your RL book club.

After tomorrow we get a break!
I wanna know - what happened to retirement?

I figure it's one of the first things I'll make when I am officially back in the kitchen - soon.
Hope you have a lovely weekend too!

I'm only 1 week into the PT so far... but it seems like a month!
According to my daughter (who is a PT) I'm in the hardest part of it right now. So. I'm looking forward to easier ;-)
When I finish Zookeeper's Wife, I expect to start The Garden of Evening Mists which is supposed to be excellent by LTers accounts.

Heh. Since I hit 75 books I am so busy in RL and sluggish in my reading. Looking forward to some me time for reading.

Oh I so hear you on the PT! People tried to tell me I would really enjoy PT - claimed I'd get massages and heat and generally a comfortable thing. Not so! And yes, I remember doing the exercises at home I don't how many times a day - 12 times a day? 6 times a day? What is nice about PT is seeing the progress you will begin to make - that really encouraged me - though it took a few weeks before I really saw any improvement.
Yes - it's a good thing to have behind you! Big hugs and positive vibes sent your way!

Oh, dear, I'm so sorry you continue to be in pain. Physical therapy is indeed difficult, but it has helped me tremendously.
Plus, the staff and my physical therapist are wonderful! Kind, compassionate and considerate, they take a special interest.
Rhett, the PT, is an avid reader, but always remarks that he could never keep up with my pace. I've encouraged him to join our group and hope he does so in 2013.
Hugs to you and Loki.

Good Morning, Everyone-who-happens-by!
Please let me be clear about my PT experience... it is exactly what I need, the therapists are wonderfully gentle, compassionate, and highly skilled.
I highly recommend PT when it is needed - ya just hafta be strong and stubborn!
The pain involved is just muscle pain and achey-ness - to be expected if I am to get this arm back in shape after not moving it for 6 weeks.
I need to be more thankful than whiny.
I am making good progress.
It's slow and I am impatient... but oh so thankful for the function that has already been revived.
btw, I DO get short massages in tight, knotted areas of my arm/shoulder. (Nice)
The last time I went was a BIG step forward as the therapist worked on a huge knot of soft tissue that had been painful and bothersome from DAY ONE (Oct 16th).
It is now almost gone and not painful. I could hug her for that!

HI Deb -
It's funny. All I heard before I started PT was how awful it would be. I guess the real answer is somewhere in the middle. It is hard but the progress is worth it, as you say. Just has to be done. I have to admit, as a group, I have never met more gentle people than the therapists I am working with.
I only have to do my exercises at home 2X daily. Don't let your therapists talk to my therapists - LOL!
Thanks for the encouragement ;)
HI Caro! *Waves back*
So, I'm wondering - ARE there pies on the other side of the world? You've been all over so you would know.
Perhaps a pie shop would be a good investment over there???
HI Kath -
"This week totally licked my butt."
I hear ya! And I'm so sorry for all that. This has not been a great introduction back into the working world for you. The Universe is being tough!
I finally did get some good sleep and did not have to get up early this morning... although, Loki is not eating his breakfast again and lays on the couch all curled up and sad looking.
*heavy sigh, again*
HI Linda -
I'm very sure any discomfort or pain I have now would be hardly noticeable compared to what you are working with. I'm glad you are having a positive PT experience, too.
***********************************
Yesterday made bunches of bows for wreaths - lost count. Have to make about 8 more today then I am done :-)
WAH! I WANNA READ! So, I'm going to give up some LT time today to hit the books! I love you all, but I need to get over this bump in the road of getting nowhere...
I'm finding that while I like to have 2 books going at once, 3 is just too much! I should just finish up Zookeeper's Wife for my book club - but I like the other two books better so I keep sneaking them in.
Hope everyone has a great Sunday (or Sunight)!

I am just reading your experience with your PT! Mine was so different! I was thinking about some it last night. I really feel for you! One of the things I had to do ( and in December-Jan and Feb ) was put the wrist I had broken into a big tub of swirling hot - 104 F water and do the various exercises and reps in the hot water. That part was nice - it helped let your muscles stretch more -and then after a set of the exercises I had to plunge my elbow to my hand into a big thing of ice! Oh that was such a shock! I'd have to do that about 3 x in row. It makes me chuckle now to think of it. I pretended to myself that I was in some dreaded Scandinavian Sauna set up where I went from the Sauna and jumped into the ice -which I would never do in real life! LOL!
The PT I had was very efficient, but very demanding and even spoke loudly. Initially I think I was scared of her!
But as you say - the big payoff is the return of function! Good for you! Whine away! I remember thinking I might never get my wrist to move again. It was really stiff - I could barely move it when the cast came off -which really shocked me. I had thought the cast comes off and I am good to go. But not so , at least for me! :)
Glad you've had a big step forward! That is so encouraging!!!! Best wishes!

I don't worry about over-hyping. Either I will like the book or I won't. I'm optimistic. I usually like/love the books rec on LT.
Now, the books chosen in my book group are on a more shaky status. But even if I don't like one of those, I always love the discussion it engenders.
Deb -
Poor, poor Deb! You got lulled with warmth only to be shocked with ice! Geesh! I swear I would have refused that treatment!
I was alittle lot dismayed that I lost all the strength in my arm. Didn't expect to be quite so handicapped.

Have been struggling all afternoon through The Zookeeper's Wife (and a bit of a nap). I can't decide if I like this book or not.
Well... I think I don't really like it, but every once in awhile Ackerman throws in a touching insight or a passage of beautiful writing I would not have wanted to miss.
Got about 100 pages still to read. Ackkk! Slow going.

Call me Scrooge - but this year we are only gifting kids for Christmas. Never thought I would do this. I'm such a "gift" person but I think I am changing my view of Christmas. Don't feel like I have to prove my love with an avalanch of gift giving anymore. AND I myownself don't care so much anymore about receiving surprise gifts. It's not as much fun doing it all long distance. So... breaking new ground this holiday. We'll see how it goes.
Today lunch with a friend at the Country Store then time with Mom this afternoon. Hopefully I will finish ZW - only 45 pages to go.

Oh Cee... I know what you mean. I keep asking my kids to stop giving us gifts.. All I want is to see them.
You know how I work.. big gift is a gift card.. as long as I can do that I will. I like to send a package with gifts to open.. but, its always socks and we bit of light.
I have asked again and again that they give us a sort of years wrap up letter.. telling us things that they did or that were important to them that year.. no luck.
Have fun with your friends and your mom...

I think my ideal Christmas would be just like Thanksgiving - a meal and a thankful heart. If gifts are needed then It would be so great if each person would bring a book that they have read and loved and then we could swap them. Wouldn't that be fun?

Hey Cee!!! I'm so sorry I've missed so much on this new thread. 160 messages behind!
Congrats on reaching 75!!!! A belated "woo hoo!" from me!
Glad Loki is on the mend. One of my cats had pancreatitis and I almost lost him. Spent a week in the vet hospital. Think I'm still paying off that credit card lol.
Here's wishing you pain free PT sessions all week! :)

I'm glad the PT sessions are helping you, Cee. Yes, they can be ....wait, what am I saying? ... they are OFTEN painful sessions, but if I've found that sucking it in and forcing yourself to go through the whole regimen regularly will ultimately bring the reward of having a (hopefully) fully recovered and functioning limb. That's what I've been telling my mom, who hates her PT sessions and tries to weasel out of going, which of course, is delaying her recovery process and her shoulder still aches.
On the subject of pies, yes, pies exist in other parts of the world .... maybe just apparently not in NZ? (still can't work that one out) Both savory pies and dessert pies can and have been tasted by moi in Europe, Asia and Australia. How does one go through life without at least apple pie or Guiness n beef pie?

We do have pies in the UK - both savoury and sweet. Fruit pies were a staple of my childhood, although I would have called them a tart rather than a pie: raspberry tart or raspberry and apple tart were my absolute favourite. But American pies look ... well ... different. Perhaps more gooey somehow?

I like the book swapping idea! I also like the Hanukkah way... several evenings of family getting together and giving token gifts.. at least, that is the wayI experienced it with our jewish neighbors the one year :) We invited them for Christmas and they invited us for Hanukkah ( 2 evenings) and it was lovely. I wish Christmas were more that way.
We no longer give piles of gifts within my family of adult children with no kids..
but getting with my sisters family is just overwhelming. No matter how hard I try to get them
to not give us gifts..it doesn't work. And those nephlets? Would you believe that they get huge piles of gifts? ( Despite their dads pleas) I listened and just have a gift each and a couple of books.. and then a related gift for their birthdays in January.
Christmas has just gotten out of hand though.. I desperately miss my boxing day bliss.. the days when the kids were home and we had leftovers, so no cooking.. and just TIME. The best gift of all.

I keep promising myself to read The Five Languages of Love.
Even w/o reading it though, I've always considered myself a "gift" person as a way to express love. I've always loved getting and giving gifts.
But said gifts needed to be meaningful - a sign that someone pays attention enough to know what would bring pleasure and creative enough to make it special. As a consequence, as the years go on I am more and more disappointed. Few have the time, talent, or inclination.
And I like spontaneous. Christmas is NOT spontaneous. I used to love Christmas shopping - but no more. Everything is so overblown and crazy it saps joy.
I have 2 grandsons who can't even think of anything they would like for a Christmas gift. They already have everything they could possibly want or need. Their other grandparents see to that. I'm stumped.

So, Kath -
You are definitely a person who expresses love with "time spent" - did you read that book? just wondering.
Bridget is the same. She just wants to spend time with loved ones and friends and I have to be more aware of that. Of course, she is easy to spend time with! (my little sweetheart)
You LIKE those year end wrap up letters? Hmmm.
Mamie -
I LOVE your idea! 2 Thanksgivings with book swaps! Perfect!
Tina -
Thanks! Apparently pancreatitis is a violent disease. And I'm beginning to wonder if I have a cat that looks like a dog! Seems more prevalent in cats??? Well, Loki is confused. Not sure if he is dog, human, or cat. It's a blend around here.
Caro -
I feel exactly like you about PT. I just want the results and am willing to suffer my way through to them. I'll be quite disappointed if I don't get back to 100%. I've gotten some guarded looks and comments on that but I don't want to ask if that is impossible. Not willing to get the wrong answer.
Rhian -
You may have solved the "pie mystery". It might just be a question of different vocabularies. I don't know if I would call our pies "gooey" but I can't think of a better descriptive word. They are quite moist but have form. Anyway - I'll take a pie anyday, any kind!

Hi Terri!
Somehow we have to figure out a cure for "falling-behind-on-threads". It's common as colds and no known cure.
Perhaps we just need to blow our noses and move on LOL!
Thanks for the congrats! AS you can see I got so blown away with my accomplishment, it stopped me in my tracks!
I'm working on #76, 77, and 78 all at the same time and making sloooow progress.
Yes, indeed! PT is helping. I drove for the first time today - just to the Country Store for lunch. It was a thrill! However, I can tell I am not quite ready yet. The seat belt is way uncomfortable on that shoulder and I can't reach the signal thing without pain. So, I'll relinquish the driving duties back to Ron for a week or two more.
Kath -
"And those nephlets? Would you believe that they get huge piles of gifts?"
Oh Yes, I can! See the sad state of affairs in my last paragraph above #166.

Hi Claudia- Sorry The Zookeeper's Wife has been such a chore. I agree that it was flawed but I didn't dislike it. Maybe listening to the audio, smoothed it over for me.

Cee, I read the took the 5 Languages of Love quiz and I found out that I have 2 primary love languages, physical touch and quality time. I apparently scored the lowest on gifts as a means of expressing love. Hmm.... rather surprising because I love giving and receiving gifts and I take quite a bit of time to think of gifts for people I care about.

The more I read The Zookeeper's Wife (almost done), the more I am glad I did. But it is a chore to read. Wish I could learn to listen - but then I never will if I don't practice which I am not doing.
If I ever figure out how to stay current on everything, I'll write a short book on it and make a little extra money for buying more books. A vicious circle???
Frankly, I find people who need less sleep are better at this thing. I have lost so much sleep over the years, I am using my retirement to catch up :)
Caro -
O. There is a quiz? Well, then. I love quizes... gotta squeeze that in ;-)
You are so multi-talented, life-affirming, and uber-dimentional I wouldn't be suprised if you scored high on all 5 love languages!

Hi Cee, I'm glad you have a positive attitude toward PT. It will serve you well. I agree about kids and the unbelievable fact that there's nothing to buy for a gift because they already have every possible toy/game. That's the problem with my nieces and nephews too. It's disheartening to see the state of affairs in today's world.

Love that line about sleep... it just seems to take a lot longer to find than to lose. Oh, how we take our young bodies for granted and unwittingly abuse them. Then we pay :{

#76 The Zookeeper's Wife by Diane Ackerman (4 stars)

This is a non-fiction account of a Polish family (zookepers) living in Warsaw, enduring persecution, and hiding Jews throughout the German ocupation in WW II. The character of the zookeeper's wife was lovely. You had to love her. She exhibited an outer calm under fear and stress (and there was plenty of that) and a special innate ability handling animals and people.
Ackerman uses diaries, letters, and other actual documents to piece together this story without the use of fictionalization to add drama. There certainly is no need for embellishment or conjecture. It is a strong account of terrifying events from a young family's perspective and not militaristic. Ackerman does explore various side issues to round out one's understanding of what was happening and why. This was quite distracting because there was so much of it, and she is trying to cram a lot into a modest sized book.
My final conclusion is, even though this book was slow going, I am glad I read this. I just wish I knew how to speed read through some of the sections where I did not want to be pulled into a sidetrack - interesting though it may be.

Good morning Cee... I'm glad to know that you will be able to do some cooking and that you are feeling a little more able to move comfortably. This is a busy time of year and it will help.. but don't be lured into over doing.. got it? I am still paying the price for doing that to myself. Unbelievably, I am still dealing with ankle pain, although it isn't as sever, it is absolutely persistant and miserable.. please don't let this happen to you!
I feel totally out of the loop here.. like I've been away for a month or so.. There are so many other things to distract me !

#77 Vale of Stars by Sean O'Brien (4.25 stars)

I loved this one! The story line of space colonization by Earth's humans was intriguing, the twists creative, the pace perfect. There were times when I felt a little lost in the narration. However, it all came together as I kept reading.
Spanning generations and centuries in a modified fast forward, the reader follows a familial bloodline in fascinating evolution - physically and socially. Women figured prominently as strong characters in a balanced portrayal of power and rebellion; intelligence and spirituality.
A fun read, the reader is treated to a variety of visionary ideas of genetics, exploration, polictics, socialization, space travel, adaptation, and survival.
ETA: I have NO idea where the title came from ???

Hi Donna -
I sometimes think I have read enough of Nazis and the Holocaust. But... there are so many stories, so many different perspectives, so much that was held back and is slowly coming to light. I am not one for shocking violence or sensationalism. Everytime I read something like this I ask why? Really. Why? But there is also the flip side... stories of human endurance that can teach us more about fear and kindness.

There are pies in NZ. But when a NZer says "pie" we are referring to a small savoury kind. Mince in a kind of gravy I suppose you'd describe it as. Smaller than your hand, bigger than a Christmas tiny one.
I want to try all those big creamy ones that clowns get put in their faces with custard and coconut and creamy stuff on top. I have the impression that North America is an oasis of cream pies in a hundred varieties. :)
>178 -Cee-: the cover turns me off big time. But you say its a pretty good read? I wonder if I can ever be turned to this kind of book, probably not. But Im glad you liked it!

>178 -Cee-: the cover turns me off big time. But you say its a pretty good read? I wonder if I can ever be turned to this kind of book, probably not. But Im glad you liked it!

Thanks, Mamie!

If only!
I thought you were the alien type (based on your opening picture a thread ago). LOL
This was an e-book for me. No creepy covers ;-)
And frankly, I don't recall any creatures like that in the book. I really wonder if they slapped the wrong title and cover on this one!

Hi Cee... you okay?
I know that I am done with reading about ugly things. I want to read about nice things. I feel like it was bad enough, I have read enough, and I want to attract a different energy my way.. but that's just me.
I think I saw the Tide on the table.. I need to get it.. just as soon as I sit here for a bit..
hugs

So glad PT is going so well.. Isn't it amazing how the massage loosens up those ligaments?
Glad you got out on your own too, and a bit of reading and Loki better - alll good.

Hi Lucy!
Things are much better - so much so I might actually stop talking about it 24/7 and get on with life ;-)
Never was truly physically handicapped before and it's all amazing to me how much I depend on what I always took for granted, how it can all be lost in a heartbeat, and how hard it is to get back. I do have stronger empathy (and admiration) for those who endure incapacities of basic body functions.

Cee.. you are killing me with that turkey pic up there... lol. Every time I log in I get hungry!
Cee... nothing wrong with talking about your injury.. something like that is like trying to avoid three rhinos in a small room. It isn't easy to do anything. You are always having to find your way around things and and ways to manage with difficulties always in your path. And it takes its toll on the rest of your body... ouch.
So keep us posted.
Hope your day is a good one...
I am working.. have to make a casserole first, then work, then lawyer in the AM and then haircut and then cleaning and then drumming and then on Saturday... Nuthin! ( Well.. you know.. nothing outstanding or out of the house if I can help it. )

Hi Kath!
Today is starting out fine. Slept til 9! Arm/shoulder feeling much better than yesterday. Nice day ;-) Loki and Woolly stretched out in sunny patches.
Ah... drumming? huh?
Sorry about the turkey up top. Having a hard time getting to 200 posts so I can switch over to Dec thread. Almost there!

Physical therapy takes lots of time and energy. It is draining. I'm glad your arm and shoulder are feeling much better.
Is Loki doing better?

Ah! Good friends in time of need... LOL
Thanks, Tina, Linda and Bonnie!
Loki is holding his own since Thanksgiving - so that's what? About 2 weeks now. He still is not eating anything but the prescription dog food. I'm afraid to upset the "apple cart".
Yesterday was an excellent day for my shoulder... every once in awhile I had a few moments when I felt almost normal! Moments w/o pain or discomfort. Imagine that!
Today my Aunt Phyl (who I swear is a real live angel) is coming from Boston area to visit Mom. She is the most loving and faithful sister I have ever known. We'll join in the visit - hoping all goes well.
Wishing everyone a good day :-)
