@ johnsimpson and fuzzi...I loved Crystal Singer also! :)

Today I got February's ER book The Thirteenth Rose by Gail Bowen. I also received two books I'd ordered for my son for his birthday in June, The Last Dragonlord and Dragon and Phoenix by Joanne Bertin. Now to pick up the third in the series...Bard's Oath. I bought A Wrinkle in Time and A Wind in the Door by Madeleine L'Engle at a used book shop yesterday. I enjoyed them as a child, and wanted to see if I would still like them.

11mollygrace
Mar 6, 2013, 8:33 pm

#10 - And will you read A Swiftly Tilting Planet, too? I had a special fondness for that one, though of course the first two in the trilogy were great also.

12Coffeehag
Mar 6, 2013, 9:05 pm

@mollygrace Yes, I intend to. In fact, I just put it on my "Wishlist." Unfortunately, they didn't have it at the used book shop. I was lucky enough with the first two to find the editions I read as a child. I don't know if I'll be so lucky with A Swiftly Tilting Planet. I just started reading A Wrinkle in Time this evening.

13mollygrace
Mar 6, 2013, 9:18 pm

Coffeehag - Enjoy, enjoy! I used the trilogy with a memorable reading class about thirty years ago. We had such a great experience with those books -- lovely memories of both books and students.

14Coffeehag
Mar 6, 2013, 9:27 pm

@mollygrace I revisit these books more confidently with your recommendation! I envy your opportunity to read them with a group of students (or any young people). That must have been great fun. :)

Coffeehag - It was my greatest pleasure as a teacher, one of the things I'm proudest of -- introducing books and reading them to or with the children (middle schoolers).

Still addicted...

"You're gonna have to face it, you're addicted to books..."

Today I added the following to my library:

Groundwork by Roger B. Swain
Cruel as the Grave by Sharon Kay Penman

and from the public library's discard shelf, for 25 cents, a first edition of Hans Brinker, published in 1924!

It's in very good condition, too, aside from library markings.

39seitherin
Mar 23, 2013, 3:06 pm

Borrowed from the library, The Beggar King by Oliver Pötzsch. And downloaded Glimpses: The Best Stories of Rick Hautala edited by Joe Morey. I had not heard of Rick Hautala until I read about his passing in an authors newsgroup I lurk in. One of them mentioned this collection for the Kindle and I thought I'd give it a shot.

I wave sworn off amazon.com, abebooks.com and thriftbooks.com until the end of April. I have bills I need to pay.

However, books for $1 are still 'okay' to buy. :)

42whymaggiemay
Mar 24, 2013, 4:33 pm

So what you're saying, fuzzi, is that bookbub.com is still acceptable? I find myself looking at books for Kindle (especially histories and science) and thinking 'If I wait for 6 months or a year (and God knows I have plenty of other stuff to read), that book will be $3.99.'

43fuzzi
Mar 24, 2013, 8:50 pm

Yes, bookbub is acceptable!

If I order one book from amazon, etc., I'll wind up ordering 5, and that's $20. I can't do that frequently anymore...

...at least not for a while... ;)

There is no way that I will read all of the books that I have before I die, and I will continue buying books. This BookBub business which I just learned about in the past few messages may just inflate numbers on my Nook in unexpected ways.

I've not long finished The Harper's Quine, by Pat McIntosh - I was a bit surprised to discover a whole series just up my street that I hadn't even heard of! Very enjoyable historical crime, set in Glasgow, Scotland - well written and cleverly plotted.

Why are books so addictive, by the way? All you people compulsively buying books - I'm right with you! Secondhand or charity bookshops are the worst - if it's a charity one you can even tell yourself it's in a good cause!

56Coffeehag
Mar 26, 2013, 9:06 pm

@Coffeehag, did you know about the sequel to Light A Single Candle? It is titled Gift of Gold, and I believe it takes place while she's in college.

Both of those books are based upon the author's life.

Maggie By My Side is non-fiction.

I'm currently reading The cat Who lived High By Lilian Jackson Braun; always a fun, furry read. After getting a much needed hair cut, I ambled into the public library and picked up F. Scott Fitzgerald's book The Great Gatsby. I thought I would join the group reads in the 75 Book Challenge group. I plan to read a little bit of that book tonight before my eyes close on me; especially if I'm close to a pillow!

Today I went to Chapters with a friend who was looking for a birthday present for a mutual friend of ours. I ended up buying two presents for myself:

Rivers of London, by Ben Aaronovitch -- it was on the bargain books table; how could I resist?
Starter for Ten, by David Nicholls -- I am desperately trying to track down a copy of the movie so am hoping the book will tide me over in the meantime.

Apr 9, 2013, 9:30 pm

From Member Giveaways I received A Life Less Ordinary by Victoria Bernadine.

Also I picked up hardcovers of Naked Heat and Heat Wave by Richard Castle and Paths of Glory by Jeffrey Archer which is a fictionalized story that I'm reading a non-fiction of, Ghosts of Everest by Jochen Hemmleb. This is an account of an attempt to reach the peak of everest in the 1920's and the climbers that were lost in that attempt, and the follow-up climb to try and find any evidence of the bodies or their equipment and to try and determine if they actually made the summit.

Must be the book fairy was looking out for me that I happened across the Archer book while I'm reading the Hemmleb book!

The bookstore cats received a book in the mail as well! I Could Pee on This by Francesco Marciuliano. Wonderful Marketing!!! LOL

Okay, why doesn't that touchstone work for me? When I go to it, it cuts off the work number and brings up a blank page. I copied it with the work number from Internet Explorer into Chrome, and it did the same thing.

I noticed the work number that shows up when I hover over the link is different from the work number of the book in your library, namely 16777215 versus 13738653. It could be that you put in the wrong work number when you forced it.
