I knew having a Barnes and noble across the road was going to be a problem. here's my haul from today:
A Hundred Summers by Beatriz Williams;
The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson;
The Other Typist by Suzanne Rindell;
The Impossible Lives of Greta Wells by Andrew Sean Greer;
Core Four by Phil Pepe-about my beloved Yankees;
The Third Sun by Julie Wu;
Brooklyn Girls by Gemma Burgess; and
The Life List by Lori Nelson Spielman
Heavy sigh-the allure was too strong -my resistance was weak

Revisited a lovely local bookstore chain (3 stores) in Corolla, on the NC Outer Banks, last week, and picked up the following:
The Bookman's Tale by Charlie Lovett - local author whose book was partly inspired by the special collections & archives department at my library!
The World's Strongest Librarian

My son also selected a couple of books, as did my mom. Love supporting local bookstores!

Mollygrace, I'm reading a William Maxwell novel later this month.

I got the following from Bookmooch:

The curate's awakening by George Macdonald
An acceptable time by Madeleine L'Engle

41mollygrace
Jul 24, 2013, 4:45 am

Bjace, I've been reading Maxwell's correspondence with Eudora Welty, What There Is To Say We Have Said -- such remarkable letters, such a remarkable friendship. Over the years I have enjoyed many of Maxwell's short stories, especially some of the autobiographical pieces, and several of his novels. I've been thinking it's time to read So Long, See You Tomorrow again.

Arrived yesterday from amazon:

Dear Life by Alice Munro

#47 - seitherin, I did read The Casual Vacancy last fall when it came out. I only gave it 3 stars, not because it was poorly written, but because it was just depressing. However, I disagreed with some of the criticisms I heard that the story was too far-fetched, that no small town/village could possibly have that much happening behind the scenes; I'm from a small town, it can - and does - happen. I thought overall, despite the story, Rowling made a solid first foray into adult literature.

Hmm, this is making me want The Cuckoo's Calling all the more...

A friend sent me The Dud Avocado by Elaine Dundy.

I also purchased a pamphlet I've been wanting to get my hands on since seeing a reference to it in the letters exchanged between William Maxwell and Eudora Welty. She was a visiting professor at Smith College in 1962 and gave the series of lectures that are published in this 46-page pamphlet, Three Papers on Fiction. There is so much to learn here, and of course, they are delightful. She refers to that "ever-miraculous thing, the opening sentence" and in the lecture on Words in Fiction reminds us that "We start from scratch, and words don't; which is the thing that matters, matters over and over again."

As much as I try to avoid Barnes and Noble over the last two weeks I've picked up the following:
The Thinking Woman's Guide to Real Magic-Emily Croy Barker;
Five Star Billionaire-Tash Aw;
The Irresistible Blueberry Bake shop and Cafe- Mary Simses;
The Rathbones- Janice Clark;
Winds of Salem -Melissa De La Cruz;
You Are One of Them-Elliott Holt;
Paris Was The Place-Susan Conley;
Tampa-Alissa Nutting;
The Sound of Things Falling -Juan Gabriel Maquez; and
The Panopticon-Jenni Fagan
I'm actually blaming the Yankees for this-if they didn't have a west coast trip and an 8 o'clock start I would have been absorbed in the game and not heard Barnes and noble call come...come... Many many books to pursue

69mollygrace
Edited: Aug 23, 2013, 1:58 pm

I've been in a book-buying frenzy of late, but I'll have you know it's not my fault. I blame it all on three books I read a month or so ago -- by the time I finished them I had a long list of other books I needed to read. The three books were Turtle Diary by Russell Hoban (and especially the excellent introduction by Ed Park), A Journey with Two Maps by Eavan Boland, and, the worst of the bunch, Howard Norman's I Hate to Leave This Beautiful Place -- unbelievable how many references Norman made to other books, writers, music, films, art . . . Actually, I think I showed remarkable restraint in buying as few books as I have.

Books lead you on to other books:

A Man in the Zoo by David Garnett
What Light Can Do by Robert Hass
The Apple Trees of Olema by Robert Hass
Charlotte Mew: Selected Poems
Charlotte Mew and Her Friends by Penelope Fitzgerald
Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami
The Mezzanine by Nicholson Baker
Collected Shorter Poems (1946-1991) by Hayden Carruth
Capital of Pain by Paul Eluard

I have no excuse for buying the following books except that I have admired other works by the authors and couldn't resist the chance to read more:

Brewster: A Novel by Mark Slouka
The Last Runaway by Tracy Chevalier
Water, Carry Me by Thomas Moran
Ardent Spirits: Leaving Home, Coming Back by Reynolds Price

Thank you, hemlokgang -- I hardly ever feel the need to make excuses for buying books, but I've been exceptionally naughty lately. I'll be making a couple of other entries here as soon as the other packages arrive. And where to put them all? I ran out of shelf space quite some time ago. It's time for a major "weeding" but I still miss the ones I discarded the last time I did that. And besides, I like weeds -- they have character. (Just like books.)
