John Maynard Keynes by Duncan Grant

“It is better to be roughly right than precisely wrong.”

I have a category called Orphans, which will still catch all the other reading I do.

My ORPHANED books ticker:

I want to treat the Short Story collection challenge as a ticker-to-itself thread, thinking 48 reviews as my goal. I'll keep the thread over in the Short Stories forum.

My SHORT STORY collections ticker:

I'm keeping a mystery-genre thread over in Crime, Thriller, and Mystery forum. Way way way too many of my reviews have been, in all forums, mysteries and thrillers, and while I love them, I don't want to get too rut-ified and read only those books while keeping up my self-made review writing census.

My MYSTERY & THRILLER books ticker:

THIS THREAD is the 75 challenge for 2014, which will be non-fiction and non-genre-fiction books published in 2013 and 2014, plus recommendations from other 75ers.

My last thread of 2012.
My last reviews of 2013 in this thread.

My 2014 NEW books ticker:

Books 1 & 2...thread 5.

Books are reviewed in post:

>4 avidmom: Isn't it? Duncan Grant was an artist capable of imbuing the simplest subject, a man sitting down and writing for example, with so many layers to appreciate. Love his stuff.

>5 kidzdoc: Sadly, yes. I've Joe'd it. Darn.

>6 connie53: Hi Connie! Maybe I'll call the next thread "13" since I've had double-six.

Nice opening to your latest thread 6:)

Yes I'm in Wales and have a reasonable library but they only have 1,2,3 and 5 of the Atticus and Oberon series so I'm going to have to see what I can do about the others.

Who cares if you forgot to number it Richard? Your threads change so darn fast that in a nanosceond you will creating another one and you can put a number on it. Very few people will even be aware of it.

Happy that I got in on the ground floor of this one.

Haha, I didn't even notice the misnumbering. If it makes you feel any better, I named my first thread Reading More in Twenty Oh Four. Get it? 2004. *eyeroll* Couldn't wait until I could start a second thread so I could name it for the correct year.

>25 drneutron: Thank goodness for the accuracy compulsion that breeds engineers, Jim. The modern world wouldn't exist without y'all. And in a non-modern world, I'd've died by age 4.

>34 Chatterbox: Heh, "keep up" for someone who has as much to do as you have is an entirely different thing than it is for most of us. Once a month is a lot when there's so much riding on each day's doings. *smooch*

>35 wilkiec: Thank you, Diana, it has been sleepy so far, and that suits me fine.

>36 scaifea: Hey Amber! Ham steaks are already prepared, unless it says "fresh ham" somewhere on it. Heating them up is a matter of taste...I like ham steak with crispy, bacon-like edges, so under the broiler for ~5min a side is good. I like sauces and fruits and fancyings-up of meats, unlike so many who prefer a blander diet, so I make a glaze of prepared mustard, apricot preserves, and Tabasco fo my ham steaks.

>37 Cobscook: Hiya Heidi! Ellen comes up with 'em, don't she? It so accurately captures the feeling of passing over the ransom money for our little darlings.

I woke up with back pain and allergy schnerkles at about 4am. Watched David Attenborough nature films and couldn't bore myself back to sleep. Took a Bendaryl and slept until noon! Then I decided, since the coffee would need to be reheated, that I'd do without today.

Ha. At 2:10p, I caved and nuked my usual mug of coffee with milk. It is almost 3p and I am finally headacheless and no longer feeling as though they could make a serial-killer movie with me as the star.

I am not enjoying Consider Phlebas. I don't know if it's because the book isn't right for me now, or if it's just not that great. It was the first in the long-running Culture series, so I'm leaning towards book/Richard mismatch.

I get bored with the same ol' same ol', but the others are relentlessly boring eaters. Garlic, olive oil, fennel seed...delicious, but not EVERY GODDAMNED MEAL.

No fruit, fresh or cooked, and never ever ever with meat. No spicy-hot. No sauces. No butter. No casseroles, no rice, no this, no that, no the other thing, just no. Oh, and we must also complain about not being able to have chicken (which I detest) despite the fact that we share two meals a week.

I'm weary or I wouldn't be whining.

I'm very concerned...even though you apparently recovered quickly, it is difficult to imagine any circumstances that would 'cause you to entertain the idea, even momentarily, of doing without coffee for an entire day, even a truncated one. Do watch carefully for any recurrence of this aberrant thought pattern, and call someone for help immediately in the event.

You have got strong symptoms of the fantods; your skin is so tight you can’t shut your eyes without opening your mouth."

Checking in to wish you a good Monday. Lot's of pretty white flakiness here. Too bad, I'll be driving in it soon enough ...

Feb 3, 2014, 6:52 pm

My kindly neighbor snowblew the drive. It came at the end of an annoying day. Six inches of snow isn't, by our standards, an emergency. People acted the fool, however, and there were consequences.

Anyway, I'm warm and dry and Stella doesn't need to go out until 8p, so this all works.

Have rediscovered the essential truth that yogurt, a thing I don't much like, is excellent for balancing digestive upsets. Two days of having a smallish bowl in the morning has eliminated the yucky tum of the past few weeks. I have to think of it as medicinal. It's not something I like, but it's far from the worst thing I've had in my mouth.

I've discovered the only yogurt I care to eat and that actually has low milk sugars in it so it doesn't upset my stomach is Greek yogurt. Less than 20 g of sugar per serving for most brands of Greek yogurt is great, and I also can't handle the fake sugars either because again, they either upset my system or give me headaches, so again, win win. I like the kind with the fruit on the bottom. One of the few dairy items I can actually eat. :)

Sorry to learn about the back pain, but glad to know that the heating pad is working well. They are terrific for relaxing tight/cramped/sore muscles.

I managed to convince the late DH to eat yogurt--oh, boy, what a massive effort that took--and it cleared up a difficult tum situation after abx. I should heed my own advice...I hate the stuff too. Tried the probiotics, which are effective but hideously and ridiculously expensive.

Sunstruck day! All kinds of snow, and some lovely black ice. I'd say harm equals benefit.

I watched all of Inspector Lewis season 6 after waking up at 4am. Even Benadryl wouldn't put me back to sleep. I kept hearing accidents on the parkway just as I'd drop off. That black ice...nothing you can do, even driving slowly, once you've hit a patch just wrong.

Walking poochums wasn't any fun in the ice. She's having the time of her life porpoising around in the plowed-up snow. I'm hoping against hope I won't go crunch! I didn't, obviously, but I do so hate ice. Snow is okay, but ice is The Devil!

From theantimedia.org:

February 4, 2014
Andrew Pontbriand | Resistance Journals

Justice Antonin Scalia predicted today that the Supreme Court will once again allow for the use of internment/FEMA camps to be used in America, as they were in World War II. During WWII, Japanese Americans were labeled enemies, and many thousands we’re place in what we’d refer today as FEMA Camps.

“You are kidding yourself if you think the same thing will not happen again,” Scalia told the University of Hawaii law school while discussing Korematsu v. United States, the ruling in which the court gave its imprimatur to the internment camps.

The local Associated Press report quotes Scalia as using a Latin phrase that means “in times of war, the laws fall silent,” to explain why the court erred in that decision and will do so again.

“That’s what was going on — the panic about the war and the invasion of the Pacific and whatnot,” Scalia said. “That’s what happens. It was wrong, but I would not be surprised to see it happen again, in time of war. It’s no justification but it is the reality.”

Justice Scalia seems to be mistaken, as a Supreme Court Justice his job is supposed to be to make sure the Executive, and Legislative Branches are in-line with the Constitution. What he was doing here is basically opening the door, and unofficially telling the already abusive government, they will not over-rule any executive decisions to open up the (at least 6) camps that exist today, and are ready to house any “enemy combatants,” under the NDAA.

It is a skating rink out there! Slush, sleet from last night, melt/refreeze/melt/refreeze = hell. A thin coating of ice over slush. Step on ice (gingerly) and crunchsploosh ICK!

Our kind neighbor snowblew again, and I shoveled the area in front of the garage door so I can take Stella down the drive. This process took over an hour for me, and has resulted in a goodly amount of pain. But since going out of the driveway is simply not gonna happen (streets are worse than my piddlin' little drive, of course), I needed to have that space as clear as possible so I don't go bum-over every time I need the pooch to piddle.

Oil delivery man was almost tearfully grateful that I'd scraped off the standpipe and even cleared a bit of the vestibule-door walk for me. He still left a stonking bill, though.

I'm eating my *shudder* yogurt with store-brand Honey Bunches of Oats cereal and that takes the curse off. The belly issues are largely gone, but I'm doing one more week of this to be extra-special certain that the gains remain in place. Medicine medicine medicine.

Dear Well Deserved Status/Popular Man

Shoveling snow is not a good thing for us. I hope you are feeling better from your toil.

My first week back to work:

Monday -- Lehigh closed

Tuesday-- four hours at Lehigh

Wednesday -- Lehigh closed

Today -- hoping not to fall as I navigate icy driveway, icy sheer sheet of glass on the street in front of our house...and then slipping up hill on the south side of Bethlehem to arrive on campus (narrow streets with cars on each side)...ugh. Walking from car uphill to arrive at my office. Spring cannot get here fast enough.

I hope your day is warm, relaxing, and that you are reading a great book.

>198 mckait:, 202 *smooch* It was a skating rink outside again. Melted snow refroze and puddles turned into black ice. I'd hate to drive in this. Stella walked on top of the frozen snow, three feet off the ground! All 40lb of her. *That* is frozen.

Good-reading *whammy* for your day.

>199 laytonwoman3rd: Dyspeptic? I think that's supposed to be "dreamy bedroom-eyed" not dyspeptic. But hey, even dyspeptic he's got That Attitude.

>200 Whisper1: Hi Linda! So glad Lehigh has canceled so many times in your first week back. All this ice is truly stinko. We won't break freezing today. I fear that means another day of skating while walking the dog. Ick!

I "shoveled" about 6ft of sludge from in front of the garage and am I glad I did! It's dry there. Such a relief. All it taught me was that I am in no way capable of snow-shoveling. Even just shoving the slush aside was exhausting.
