New members reviews not being displayed in main page.

Newly made book reviews are failing to appear on the main book page.
You can view them if you click on the reviews button on the tool bar, but the main page does not show it.

I now remember Tim mentioning a while back, that reviews do get out of synch, and that there is a periodic process for updating them. If I spot my review showing up over the next few hours I'll just close this case.

As I recall the work pages are built periodically and cached for performance reasons so changes won't necessarily show up on them right away.

I am sure you are correct. But, I am confused. Does the page take that much longer to update on European severs, as I still don't see the review on the main page here in the UK.

Yes, I thought of that; so, I loaded the page up on a different device and it is not showing up on that either.

I have now cleared all website data on my original device (ipad) and reloaded the page. Still no reviews showing.

Since this does not seem to be a bug on LT and more likely a local DNS issue here in my part of the world, I am closing this case.

There used to be a problem in New Zealand where the ISP was saving cached copies of pages. Maybe that's what's happening?

I have reopened this case because I still can not see my review for:
'Stop-motion Armature Machining: A Construction Manual' that I wrote almost 24hrs ago. Although I accept that other people appear to be able to see it, I don't. Therefor, it remains a Bug from my point of view.

To add to this; and to show that it is not an isolated incident...

Yesterday, I also wrote a 'test' review for this book:

Again, it does not appear under 'member reviews'. This one does not even appear under my 'your book information'.
Even though '1' review is indicated on the top toolbar on the book page itself; when I click on the '1' link, my review box is blank!
The only place I can actually see the review at all is on my Profile, Reviews page.

So, today, I wrote a 'test' review for another book:

It also does not appear under 'member reviews'. However, this time it does show on my 'your book information' that I have reviewed this book. And, like before, the top toolbar also indicates '1' review exists for this book. And sure enough this time, when I click on the '1' review link it takes me to the editing box for this 'test' review.
However, my Profile, Reviews page does not recognise that I wrote a review for this book at all!

Is my account corrupted in some way?
Please may I ask for some assistance to resolve this bug.

It is also defaulting to a different cover. Not sure how relevent that is.
I do own both versions of this book under different titles.
I also recently combined the two books, as Making Mad Toys & Mechanical Marvels in Wood is the same book as Whacky Toys, Whirligigs and Whatchamacallits
Either way; it should still show a review. Technically, all it means is that I could write two reviews for the same book if I wanted.

Same problem remains.

In desperation I just tried signing out, then back into my account. But, still can not see my new reviews on the main book pages (and elsewhere where indicated in >16 Sylak:)

Reviews that I wrote up until three days ago (7th November) appear normally.

On a hunch, I also just double checked that the Make a private book feature was not accidentally toggled on. It was not.

However, I just noticed that although my Profile page states that I have written 160 reviews. When I go to the Profile/Reviews I find only 159 reviews in total.

Had you tried to come to LT from a different network - a web cafe, a wifi, a friend's computer?
It sounds more and more like a provider level caching (as >13 jjwilson61: thought might be the case) or a caching in your networking hardware - which no amount of work on the LT side can fix :(

Just FYI: About 10 minutes ago I ran into this same issue with my review for The Gospel of Loki. I've posted many reviews over the past two years and they always show up immediately after I hit "save." Not this time.

I'm having the same issue with two reviews I have posted today. My home page says I have 648 reviews, but when I click on my reviews page, it only shows 646. Neither review is showing up on the main work page, either. I can see the reviews in the edit box on the work pages, but they are not listed with the rest of the reviews. This has never happened before, so not sure if it's a bug or what.

The books I reviewed are:

I'm seeing this same problem with a review I wrote yesterday: http://www.librarything.com/work/81167/reviews/91534523. It's showing up in the text box on the book's reviews page, and on my own Reviews page (as accessed from my profile page), but not as a review on the book's reviews page or on the work page. Interestingly, my catalog view shows the "review" bubble filled in to indicate that I reviewed the book. It also indicates that there are nine reviews (which I think is also what it said before I submitted mine, although I'm not entirely positive), but the reviews page for the book only shows 7.

I've tried re-saving it and refreshing the page, on two different machines (both using Firefox), but it hasn't made any difference.

Aha! Wait, I found my review! I suddenly realized that, rather than showing 7 reviews, it was showing 7 in English, 1 in German, and 9 in "all languages." When I clicked on "all languages," there was my review! I don't know what language it thinks it was in...

Also weird... When I click on "all languages," it sorts by date, oldest to most recent, with mine at the bottom. When I click on "date" to resort new-to-old, my review vanishes again, and "all languages" now shows (8) instead of (9) next to it. Very strange.

I have the same problem with my last two reviews, both from yesterday. Both seem to be there, yet are not there. At the same time, I can see all reviews by Sylak, wisewoman and bragan mentioned above. I also noticed the same discrepancy as bragan (27), but I still can't see my reviews, whatever the sorting. Very strange indeed.

PS I logged in as an "outsider", through my legacy library profile, and then I could see Waldstein's last two reviews. It seems, then, that the reviews are invisible only, or at least mostly, to the reviewers who post them. No idea at all why this should be...

Don't have access to another network; but, I logged into a different LT account, just now, at the same computer and can see all my reviews normally. But, switching back on my 'Sylak' profile the reviews are missing again.

I have written a few reviews in the past in French; which seemed to then become my default review language for some strange reason.

Then, I noticed the other day that my review language had finally defaulted back to 'English', which till then I had not been able to change no matter what I did (This had been an annoying little bug I kept meaning to chase up for months).
I now notice that 'French' has completely disappeared from my custom list (which appears at the top of the languages drop box above the dotted line), which now only displays English as my selected language.
I had assumed that my default 'English' settings had finally taken, and that it had been an ipad issue resolved during the last OS update; but now I am wondering if it was a bug fixed by the LT team that implemented the change to my default review language. If so, could some other bit of the code have been affected adversely which is causing reviews to 'ghost'.

How many people with this 'ghost' reviews issue also write reviews in more than one language?

I'm just putting it out there as an observation.

I'm having the same problem. It seems just to be for this month, and I've only posted one review so far this month. (I'm OK on a review I posted Oct 31.)

Don't know if this is a bug or if it's some change TPTB have made to the "Main Page" of books.

I recently posted a review of Shirley Jackson's Let Me Tell You. The review does not appear in HTML format on the book's "Main Page" when I'm signed in to my account, but it does appear in the "Edit panel" for mark-up. If, however, I'm signed out then the review does appear in HTML format on the book's main page (though, obviously and correctly so, it doesn't appear in an "Edit panel" where I could change it without being signed in to my account).

First time I've seen this happen. As far as I can see, it looks like this is the only case of this with one of my reviews. I posted this review on November 6, and the immediately preceding review that I posted (for Jean Webster's Daddy Long Legs) correctly shows in the book's "Main Page" in HTML format and also in an "Edit panel" where I can change it when signed in.

If I go to my Profile page and click on "Reviews" then I do get my Let Me Tell You review in HTML format, but it would be a lot more convenient to have the HTML format on the book's "Main Page" as well, which would enable me to see the HTML format while I'm trying to correct typos or coding errors in the review.

I only write reviews in English, but I have noticed a ton of foreign-language (German?) reviews from others of books in my library, showing next to my English reviews page. I wonder...

Okay, very strange. When I sort my reviews by date starting with the first, it says "showing 1-30 of 648". When I re-sort to show the latest first, it says "showing 1-30 of 646". I don't know that the language setting has anything to do with it.

It starts sounding like some weird filtering of reviews that hides one's own newest reviews...

@lorannen - any chance someone in the Dev team can look at it?

Thanks for the extensive reporting and examples, everyone. This really helps. Just wanted to pop in for a minute to let you all know that I'm aware that something's definitely going on here. It's a vacation day for LT staff today (Veterans' Day), but I'll try to get some developer help on this tomorrow.

I know you've acknowledged all the comments Loranne, but thought I'd still pipe up to say this has been a problem for me too. I'm in Canada and had posted a review yesterday for Beauty is a Wound and one today for Between the World and Me, and both are not showing up, no matter what I try.

Who gets Veteran's Day off, aside from Gov't employees and banks?

It is technically a Federal Holiday - so every state and company can choose to declare it a holiday. My company works today but we get MLK Day off - which not everyone does.

Companies can choose to declare any random day a holiday, regardless of whether or not it's a federal holiday. I've never worked anywhere that got Veteran's Day off - good for LT for giving their employees the day off.

My daughter has the day off from public school. I'm at work, though, and my new review of Ludwig II: The Mad King of Bavaria is in a ghost-state similar to the others recently reported.

It makes sense for a company with a small staff to take public holidays off when many of them, including the boss, have school age children.

A review I added the other day doesn't show up on the work page at all either. More anecdata.

The work page for Ludwig II, Mad King of Bavaria shows "Reviewed, 746 words" in the My Book Information module, but "No reviews" in the Member Reviews module.

I just encountered the issue when I posted a review for Storm Front a few minutes ago. It doesn't appear for me on any device (phone, tablet, pc) though the activity shows up in my "recent activity" list. Two reviews I posted on 11/6 did not have any trouble at all. Anything change since then?

If you post any further reviews, please chime in on that bug report, and I'll take a look to see if they're exhibiting the same behavior.

The review of Lumberjanes that I posted last night isn't showing up either.

So it looks like they clear up after a few days, but new reviews still cannot be seen by the member who writes them until such time.

Yep, definitely still an issue. I'm pointing our developers to a new bug report, since this one has gotten a little long and messy. I'll post here and mark both as fixed once it's under control.

Reviews in my profile now indicates positive for one new review. And to confirm, it is showing up in my reviews for that book.

Jumping to another profile shows the review I made for 'Timing for Animation' perfectly.
While, jumping back to my 'Sylak' profile it is 'ghosting' - as in not visible to me.

I'm no expert. But, it is looking more and more like some sort of server replication lag to do with the way the reviews are being updated but missing out the source profile that created them.
Its like the sever is holding onto the source profile where the reviews were created while it updates the rest of the members, but forgets to update the one it it holding on to.
Then after a few days the members profile just catches up through periodical replication.

Apologies for the naiveté of my hypothesis

Update: As of today (3 days after first posting my review for this book) it is now visible on my profile.

The review I posted today is invisible to me (on the work page and my reviewer page) as is the review I posted yesterday.

This is solved for books with less than 500 copies. I'm working on a new algorithm to make the high-number books faster.
