What is the last book you finished/will finish in 2007?
I think, sadly enough, mine is on track to be The Carnivorous Carnival (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 9) by Lemony Snicket. I would have hoped for something a little more sophisticated-sounding. :)

It's a book by an LT author (...a nice way to end the year) called Looking for Alaska.
3Romanus
Mine is also unsophisticated, but a good holiday reading... The Snake Stone by Jason Goodwin
(Why do the title and author appear in red and the touchstones fail...?)

I'm working on finishing The Great War and Modern Memory.... balancing out my own lighter reading. It got set aside a month or two ago, and I've been grateful to pick it up again today, and continue.
If all goes well, I'll edge the end of The Third Policeman in before tomorrow, midnight.

I'm presently reading Bon Voyage by Noel Coward, but I may finish it and begin another before year's end. We'll see.

My last book was Deception Point by Dan Brown. I'm about halfway through Fault Lines by Anna Salter right now, but I know I won't finish it by tomorrow night. I have to go work a 10 hour shift tomorrow anyway.
Happy 2008 everyone!!!!!

I will finish by reading the December 31st essay in Simple Abundance.

My last book has been Excellent Women by Barbara Pym. A very enjoyable way to end the year :)

I've just finished Atonement and hope to squeeze in Dress Your Family in Courduroy and Denim by David Sedaris. I want to end the year with a smile!

Last book I've finished (so far) in 2007 is Ysabel by Guy Gavriel Kay (#110, I think). I'm close to the end of Jane Eyre on audiobook and, if my day isn't too strenuous at work, should finish it tomorrow. I started Blonde Faith by Walter Mosley last night, but it's so good that I'm devouring it and just may finish it too before midnight tomorrow.

Hmm...well I finished The Mist (previously published as a novella in Skeleton Crew) by Stephen King. I may be able to finish Worlds Apart: Why poverty persists in rural America by tonight, we'll see.
13rebeccanyc
I am reading The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolano, but I won't finish it by tonight so the last book I read will be The Tenderness of Wolves by Stef Penney.
14Bookmarque
The last physical book finished was Hard Truth by Nevada Barr, the lastest in the Anna Pidgeon series. The last audio book was Darwin's Children by Greg Bear. Probably won't finish the one I just cracked - New England White by Stephen L. Carter.

I'll be finishing up Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim later today as I expected. But why did I think it would be a happy read? There's a bit of wry humor here and there but overall it's a rather melancholy memoir. I imagine I was looking for the story and humourous anecdotes that might prompt one to imagine a deeper, melancholy story.

I stayed in bed this morning to finish A College of Magics by Caroline Stevermer. Since I'm going to be spending the rest of the day making appetizers and cleaning the house for tonight, I doubt I'm even going to have time to start another book, much less finish one.
17Jenson_AKA_DL
I'm very doubtful I'll finish the book I'm currently reading tonight so that would make the last novel I read in 2007 The China Garden by Liz Berry. Not a bad novel to end with since I did like it and it was a Christmas 2006 present.
18amancine
Killing Critics by Carol O'Connell - the third book in the "Mallory" series. What a great way to end the year!
19Storeetllr
amancine ~ Agreed! Killing Critics was one of my favorites this year. Actually, I "discovered" O'Connell this year and read all the Mallory mysteries as well as Judas Child. I sure hope she continues writing about Mallory.
Happy New Year!

I polished off my little volume of Grimms' Fairy Tales earlier this afternoon. I know I won't finish anything else before midnight tonight.

I finished Toast by Nigel Slater with a smile yesterday. I'm not sure what my first read of 2008 will be.
22TeacherDad
I may get a little further along in Watership Down tonight, but the last things I'll be reading are labels:
chapter 1: vodka, vermouth, olives
chapter 2: champagne
chapter 3: Bailey's Irish Creme!
Happy New Year!

Just finished 1491 on Friday. I'm only on page 33 of Queen Isabella, so I'm not going to finish it in four and a half hours.

Oh, we'll be safe -- staying home this year... the only danger will be throwing out my shoulder playing Wii with the boys... or having to carry one of them upstairs when they fall asleep before 12...
26heyjude
I've been working my way through re-reading the Lilian Jackson Braun "The Cat Who..." books and today read the 18th in the series, The Cat Who Said Cheese. And it was number 176 for the year....
27DanoWins
I finished World Without End by Ken Follett the other day and then started Augustus: the life of Rome's first emperor by Anthony Everitt. I was hoping to have it finished tonight, but it looks like finishing it will have to wail until next year!
28ijustgetbored
I'm reading March Violets now but won't finish it tonight unless someone turns off the blasted television.
Therefore, the last book I've finished this year is Elizabeth Alone, by William Trevor.
(here's hoping the touchstones work)

My last two books will be Shopgirl & A History of the Wife. Am not going out until 11, so I have time to finish!
30Madcow299
God Bless you teacherdad, that made me laugh! Probably cause I am also reading the labels of my favorite micro-brewery right now. Happy new year!

I'll be finishing Peace Like a River by Leif Enger unless the fireworks start up again, driving my greyhounds into stress-mode.
32Storeetllr
I just finished Jane Eyre, and what a perfectly wonderful novel with which to end a perfectly wonderful reading year!
33devenish
Just completed The Library Paradox by Catherine Shaw which I suppose is rather appropriate.
Happy New year everyone.
Happy New year everyone.

Tree of Smoke was the last book I finished. What a loser! I gave it a rating of 1/2 star.

The last book I finished was Reincarnation for the Christian by Quincy Howe--actually there's a Jr at the end of his name, but the touchstone only works without it. It's one of those that I had read--and even reviewed-- several months ago except for the last few pages and the 'Guide to Primary Sources' list. I wanted to spend some time on that, so I finally got it done and can now feel like I've done it justice.
Earlier in the day, I had finished a book I received for Christmas: Too Late to Say Good-Bye by Ann Rule.
Two last books came into my home yesterday. I purchased Phedre by Jean Racine for a literature class, and received a beautiful hardback copy of Thich Nhat Hanh's Going Home: Jesus and Buddha as Brothers through the Bookins swap site.

The Piano teacher--Elfriede Jelinek and posted a review today.

I finished Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade by Diana Gabaldon. Unfortunately I left my 2007 reading journal at home - this year I filled over 2 notebooks, so I wanted to start a new journal with the new year - and I haven't been writing a review.
38legxleg
I finished Ha'penny by Jo Walton a few hours before New Years festivities started. A kind of depressing end to the year, but it would have been more depressing if the book wasn't a good one .
39vpfluke
My last book, due at the public library was Things of the Hidden God: Journey to the Holy Mountain by Christopher Merrill (10 copies in LT). This is about a series of pilgrimages to Mt. Athos in Greece.
40vpfluke
My last novel in 2007 was The Autobiography of God by Julius Lester. It involves a Jewish rabbi at a Vermont college and her encounters there with students and with God.
41aviddiva
A comfortable re-read: Devil's Cub by Georgette Heyer. I'm in the middle of a couple of other things but that was the last in 2007.
42megrockstar
the dog whisperer, great great read, so helpful. my pooch is a new man!:)
43LynnB
My last book was going to be Tomorrow by Graham Swift, but I finished it on the 30th; so I read The Giver by Lois Lowry and still had a couple of hours to kill before getting ready for our New Year's Eve party...so I also read Kafka's Soup: a complete history of world literature in 14 recipes by Mark Crick. And that was my last 2007 book.
44bluesalamanders
Mine was The Diamond Age, or, a Young Lady's Illustrated Primer by Neal Stephenson. Excellent book. I actually finished it in 2008, but only the last dozen or so pages; I included on my list as my last book of '07.
45TeacherDad
#42 -- I think that would take more than a book... a medical breakthrough or divine intervention, perhaps?
46TheTwoDs
The last book I finished in 2007 was Atonement by Ian McEwan, my third McEwan for the year after The Cement Garden and Saturday. I completed it on December 30 and enjoyed it a lot. I'm looking forward to seeing the film adaptation as I have heard it is very faithful to the novel.
47Fourpawz2
My last book for 2007 was The Scapegoat by Daphne DuMaurier. I read it a long time ago and I thought that the story held up quite well.
