2020, a new decade. Feels so weird to me, who was born in 1953. Seems like an auspicious year for some reason is a year of new beginnings. 2020 is the year of the metal rat. The Rat is the first sign from the 12 animals cycle of the Chinese Astrology. Many things came to an end in 2019; my full time career status changed to retired, working casual part time. It is a new beginning for me, learning to be a mostly retired person.
This year, I will be reading Monkey: Journey to the West by Ch'eng-en. And hopefully making further progress in reading 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die. ROOTs, and other group reads with my f2f book group and group reads here at 2020 Category Challenge.

Lovely setup! Rats aren't my favorite animal, but you have posted some cute pictures. 2020 should be a great reading year for you.
21Zozette
Lots of great books listed. I hope you have an enjoyable read year.
The Wasp Factory is an excellent book but it is quite disturbing.

Looks like you're all set for another great reading year!
25MissWatson
The Year of the metal Rat? Sounds like a good reason for re-reading The Stainless Steel Rat...happy reading and retirement!

Happy 2020 reading!
27Kristelh
>25 MissWatson:, oh, that would be a good one and my library has it.

I love the metal rat at the top!
I agree with >21 Zozette: on The Wasp Factory. Iain Banks is one of my projects this year; The Wasp Factory was the first book I read by him.
I'll be following your 1001 reading as well - I like Doris Lessing and I have that book on my TBR - I'm looking forward to seeing what you think.

>30 Kristelh: I am doing the Pulitzer Prize at the moment which will take a while. Then I plan to move onto the Booker.
32christina_reads
>30 Kristelh: I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I've only read two of these (The Remains of the Day and Possession). I think I just don't tend to enjoy the types of books that win literary awards...although I did really like The Remains of the Day, so maybe I should reevaluate!
33Tess_W
>30 Kristelh: Congrats, you are making great progress! I, like Christina_reads, tend to shy away from books that have won awards after trying my hand at 120+ books on the 1001 list!
34LisaMorr
>30 Kristelh: Thank you for posting this (and thanks to Paul also, just that I found it here first!). I've only read 5, and I have at least 15 of these on my shelves. This is a great multi-year personal reading challenge to add!

Happy Thingaversary! Which books did you order?
45Kristelh
>44 RidgewayGirl:, I haven't decided yet but I am thinking of trying to order a couple of Virago's by Sylvia Townsend Warner that are on the 1001 list, I also am going to count the 2 books I just got from Indiespensable. I have some audio credits to use so will probably pick up some 1001 list books such as Magic Mountain as I hear that the audio is good.
