DeltaQueen wanders through literary doorways in 2025 - Part 5

I decided to update my opening photos to better reflect the season.

Welcome everyone to my fifth thread of the year. The last few months have been difficult as we have been dealing with my husband's cancer, but treatment is finished and he is doing well so now we are looking to getting everything back to normal. I have completed this years Bingo card as well as my personal reading challenge and my Around the World Reading Challenge and I am only a few books away from reading at least 10 books in each of my categories. I think I can say that 2025 had been a successful reading year.

I am putting the finishing touches to my 2026 Category Challenge and hope to have it posted before the end of November. I am looking forward to a fun and challenge filled reading year as I am sure most of you are as well.

For now, relax, settle in and enjoy the rest of 2025!

2025 Doorway Challenge

1. Doorway to the Past – Historical Fiction is one of my favorite genres, I will be reading books from many different time periods and this is where I will also place any books that I read for the Reading Through Time Challenges.

2. Doorway to the Library – The Library is a fantastic source for books, from the current best sellers to older forgotten volumes as well as non-fiction reads and graphic novels. I will place my library borrows here.

3. Doorway to Fantasy – This is where I will place the reads that lead me to strange places and other words that are populated by dragons and magical beings.

4. Doorway to Dark Fantasy – At times I like my fantasy to be on the dark side so this category is for my horror and dystopian reads.

5. Doorway to Science Fiction – When my book leads to outer space or to distant corners of the universe, they will be placed here.

6. Doorway to Mystery/Crime – My fall back genre. I love a good mystery and/or crime story, and this is where I will place them.

7. Doorway to Series – One of my on-going goals is to stay current with the many series that I am following – I am never successful with this but here is where I will list the series books that I do read this year.

8. Doorway to Vintage Mysteries - I love to read the mysteries of yesterday so whether it is a polite British whodunit from the likes of Agatha Christie, a dark and gritty noir by Raymond Chandler or even a hard-boiled thriller by John D. MacDonald, this is where I will place them.

9. Doorway to the Alphabet Challenge – I always participate in the AlphaKit so alphabet choices from A – Z will be placed here. This is the one category that I will allow some overlap with other categories.

10. Doorway to Global Reading – Great stories come from all over the world so this is where I will place books that are set in foreign countries.

11. Doorway to the 1,001 Books & Classics - I have been reading a few books from the 1,001 Books to Read Before You Die List over the last few years and this is where I will place these classics

12. Doorway to Romance – There are times when I need to step away from the more serious reads and embrace a romantic tale. Some are from days long ago and others are from modern days, but they will all fit here.

13. Doorway to Adventure – When I really need to escape to another time and place, I pick books that are filled with adventure and excitement. Those books will find a home here.

14. Doorway to Kindle Unlimited – Practically free books – the more you read the more you save - but they do need to be read and returned in a timely fashion. I need to keep rotating these books so this category will help me “read and return”.

15. Doorway to Extra Books - There may be books that don’t fall into any of the above categories so they will find a home here.

Happy New Thread, Judy, and so glad that your life is now clear of the radiation trips and parking lot mazes and you can attend to other things. Like books and hosting Challenges this year and next.

I haven't been to the 2026 Challenge page yet, and I know you are one of the dedicated LT participants who is able to start early for getting your thread up. I can't wait to see how you categorize your 2026 reading year and your incredible pictures.

Bel Canto seems to have made an impact on you and many of your followers. And your review of Hunger was very interesting and detailed. What a terrible journey Hamsun was on. The mind bouncing back and forth while dealing with the varying levels of hunger was an intense (and accurate) description

Hope your husband continues to improve from the radiation treatments and look forward to keeping current with your reading adventures!

Hi Judy, I think that there was something about the Travis McGee series that I didn’t care for either. I’m so glad that I didn’t collect all of the books like I did with other series and now I’m not sure I want to read them. I’m glad your husband is finished with his treatments and hope that both of you remain healthy.

>39 lsh63: Hi Lisa. I was disappointed as Travis McGee was a very dated and, to me, unsympathic character. I can accept some of MacDonald's opinions in his stand-alones as they are usually featuring uneducated criminals but he doesn't have the best record when it comes to women.

>41 DeltaQueen50: Best book of the year! With that kind of endorsement, I've got to read it and, in fact, have it on hold at the library. It should take a few weeks, but I'm willing to wait.

I read Relic a few years ago and remember enjoying it but not enough to read more by that author.

I am intrigued to learn how members prune their large TBRs. Especially if they own books hoping to read them sometime.

I only read books on loan from a library, or some from Audible. This means that my TBR is immense. Up to this time I would choose to read books that I learned about from the media or from other member reading lists. I would look up the books on LT, or GR to see if the description matched my perceived interests.

This year I decided to find my own books to read based on the genres and sub-genres I have learned over the years that I gravitate to. I am using the FICTIONDB website to do my searching this year and I have found several hundred interesting books that truly match my interests.

Some of those books are the ones I plan to read next year, along with new books coming out from my favorite authors. BBs coming from you and others will pass through my FICTIONDB analysis to see if they are something I will read.

Just curious about how others tackle this job. I can see how your well-established category system would support your selection process.

Hello Judy and thank you for your always interesting book choices and reviews! While we have a wreath and a garland, they are both on the front porch waiting to be hung. We are forgoing a tree this year as our newest addition to our family, a calico kitten, is full of kitten energy and loves finding ways to climb onto things.

I have also done the culling of the TBR list and it has been so very refreshing. All those books I bought over the years that I never read I felt very sad for, but I also know that it's best to give these orphans a new home. There are a couple of Little Free Libraries in my neighborhood, and I found that there is a Little Free Library app. It is so cool! I downloaded it, and when I am out and about I'll open it up and discover roads and locations I never knew existed! Hope this advice helps with those culling their shelves.

Doing this culling also has helped me focus on creating reading time in my life, usually after work to wind down, and recognizing that each book I buy is a commitment to my self and my interest at that time.

Can't wait to get to the 2026 Challenge and see your new thread!

Good to see that you are ready for Christmas, Judy. I don't do much to prepare which is probably a good thing because I'm not ready at all.

Hi, Judy! Thanks for stopping by and visiting my thread the other day. I'm so glad you and your DH are able to enjoy the holiday season this year after a heck of a year past!

You're sure been reading a lot of great books (with one or two exceptions)! (How disappointing that the ghost story wasn't a good read, because the premise sounds really fun.) I have to say I agree with you on >134 DeltaQueen50: - I really enjoyed Mickey7 when I read it a year or so ago.

Hi Mary. I know you are fighting your own heath issues as well and I hope things go well. I am relaxing this afternoon and enjoying the smell of mince tarts whih I just took out of the oven. Although mincemeat isn't as popular as it one was, both my husband and I are big fans and it wouldn't be Chistmas without a taste of mincemeat.

Happy Sunday, Judy. Just checking in. You always read such an interesting, wide-ranging choice of books. I admire that. Can you let me know me know when the new AlphaKit is posted? I am not very good at participating but I do use it.

Have a wonderful holiday with the family.

>143 DeltaQueen50: Ooooh, incemeat pie! One of my favorite things, but, yes, you're right. Not very popular these days. I may have to make (or more likely buy) one, though I wonder whether it will be as good as I remember.

Enjoy!

Christmas and Boxing Day were both lovely relaxing days. I cooked a big dinner on Christmas Eve for my younger daughter and her husband. Christmas Day we went to the elder daughter's place and had dinner with the family, We relaxed on Boxing Day and did very little - mostly reading and napping.

I did very well for myself at Christmas, an Amazon gift card so I can stock up on books, a Kindle holder and an automatic Kindle page turner so I can read my Kindle and keep my hands under a cozy blanket. I was also given a beautiful cozy blanket, a jacket, a new wallet and a couple of tops. All in all, a great Christmas haul!

>155 Storeetllr: Happy Holidays,Mary, I hope you had a lovely time with your family. I do miss having little ones around at Christmas, we had to make do with two grown grandkids and their girlfriend and boyfriend.

>156 Familyhistorian: When it comes to cooking or baking, these days I always take the shortcut. Hope you had a great Christmas, Meg!

We have no plans for New Years Eve, we will probably have a nice dinner and a quiet evening. On New Years Day we are going out to a family brunch which will be nice. Best wishes to everyone, I hope you are all having Happy Holidays!

Sounds like you had a wonderful Christmas! My husband and I eat only small meals now, and wouldn't be able to handle a full dinner, even in small portions. I missed mince tarts this year, and I'm hoping the bakery will have some before the end of the year.

Wishing you peace, health, and happiness in 2026!

>162 VivienneR: Thank you, Vivienne - wishing the same to you and your family. We too, tend to eat smaller meals and I wasn't able to finish my dinner on Christmas Eve. I struggled with my Xmas dinner as well but forced myself to finish as I didn't want to embarrass the cook. Now we are back to our regular routine and are happier for it.

I thought I was the only one whose appetite has shrunk in the past year or two. I only wish my girth would shrink as well, but, alas! No such luck.

Glad your holidays were happy and that you got a lot of Christmas goodies! All the best to you and your husband in 2026!

Ooooh, mincemeat! I don't know if I've ever had it, either homemade or store bought. Yours sounds delightful and especially with all the memories of Christmases past.

And I know what you mean about not eating as much. I brought a pre-made Christmas dinner to my sis-in-law's, since they've hosted so much and she does not like cooking. It was geared for 4-5 people, but both households took leftovers home. Which is just fine with me since it gives me more time to catch up on LT and finishing a couple of books.

>134 DeltaQueen50: So that's what this book is about! They made a movie earlier this year and I never saw it. It looked like it asked a lot of questions and your review confirmed that it did.

>164 Storeetllr: Mary, over the past year or so I have dropped a lot of weight. I just totally lost my interest in food. My appetite returned a few months ago and I started to look forward to eating, but I had shrunk my appetite and I am trying not to enlarge it again as I have no interest in putting my lost pounds back on! Some things still taste off to me and coffee has lost it's appeal. Tea on the other hand is still a favorite.

>165 threadnsong: I haven't seen the Mickey7 movie either but I will watch it when I can. I believe I am reading my last book of the year and when I start a new one tomorrow, it will count for 2026. I haven't decided which on to start with but I usually chose longer books at the beginning of the month.

I understand the discussion here about meals. Hubby and I rarely eat three meals a day, and we share a meal when we go out to eat. Even my elderly cat Charlie Dickens seems to have lost his interest in eating lately.
