As per the pictures above, I will be reading Akmaral set in Mongolia and The Finishing School set in Switzerland during August.
We’ve passed the halfway point of the year and so far it’s been a good reading year for me. Real life has been more difficult but we are improving daily. My 2025 Challenge is going well. All categories are flying off the shelf with the exception of science fiction and the 1,001 books List which are lagging a little behind. I am proud that I did manage to read all four of the Neapolitan Novels which I found quite a slog.
I really appreciate all the friends and fellow book lovers who have dropped by my thread and as soon as things level off at home, I will be by to return all the visits.

2025 Doorway Challenge
1. Doorway to the Past – Historical Fiction is one of my favorite genres, I will be reading books from many different time periods and this is where I will also place any books that I read for the Reading Through Time Challenges.
2. Doorway to the Library – The Library is a fantastic source for books, from the current best sellers to older forgotten volumes as well as non-fiction reads and graphic novels. I will place my library borrows here.
3. Doorway to Fantasy – This is where I will place the reads that lead me to strange places and other words that are populated by dragons and magical beings.
4. Doorway to Dark Fantasy – At times I like my fantasy to be on the dark side so this category is for my horror and dystopian reads.
5. Doorway to Science Fiction – When my book leads to outer space or to distant corners of the universe, they will be placed here.
6. Doorway to Mystery/Crime – My fall back genre. I love a good mystery and/or crime story, and this is where I will place them.
7. Doorway to Series – One of my on-going goals is to stay current with the many series that I am following – I am never successful with this but here is where I will list the series books that I do read this year.
8. Doorway to Vintage Mysteries - I love to read the mysteries of yesterday so whether it is a polite British whodunit from the likes of Agatha Christie, a dark and gritty noir by Raymond Chandler or even a hard-boiled thriller by John D. MacDonald, this is where I will place them.
9. Doorway to the Alphabet Challenge – I always participate in the AlphaKit so alphabet choices from A – Z will be placed here. This is the one category that I will allow some overlap with other categories.
10. Doorway to Global Reading – Great stories come from all over the world so this is where I will place books that are set in foreign countries.
11. Doorway to the 1,001 Books & Classics - I have been reading a few books from the 1,001 Books to Read Before You Die List over the last few years and this is where I will place these classics
12. Doorway to Romance – There are times when I need to step away from the more serious reads and embrace a romantic tale. Some are from days long ago and others are from modern days, but they will all fit here.
13. Doorway to Adventure – When I really need to escape to another time and place, I pick books that are filled with adventure and excitement. Those books will find a home here.
14. Doorway to Kindle Unlimited – Practically free books – the more you read the more you save - but they do need to be read and returned in a timely fashion. I need to keep rotating these books so this category will help me “read and return”.

On Friday he just seemed to get weaker and weaker until he collapsed. I couldn't move him so I called an ambulance. They took him to our small local hospital. He is showing all the signs of having an infection but they haven't narrowed it down yet as to where it is. I just hope he ill be well enough for me to take him to see the surgeon on Wednesday.

Today is a Civic holiday here so our traffic is all mixed up as they have the parade route streets all blocked off. Since we live very close to the center of Tsawwassen, it took me 40 minutes to get home from the hospital this morning. They are going to try and arrange a transfer for him to go to his surgeon's appointment on Wednesday and they are going to see if I can ride along as well. This is an important visit as he hasn't seen the surgeon since he left the hospital and I think it's time for his drains to come out.

I've read the Dr. Siri series, loved it, and am considering a reread. I wonder if there's going to be a new one coming out anytime soon. I hope so, though his last was written in 2020, so maybe not. His Jimm Juree series is also good, though not quite as compelling as Dr. Siri, and I see he has a number of standalones that I hadn't known about previously. I'll have to check them out.

>60 threadnsong: Thank you for your sympathy. My husband was released from hospital and we have seen the surgeon. The operations were successful but they now figure that he had two different types of cancer which is unusual. We are seeing the oncologist on Monday and hopefully we will have more information then. The surgeon did warn us that as well as radiation, he may have to have some chemo as well. Currently we have a home care health worker coming in twice a day to help him.

Just a quick update on my husband's health. We saw a number of doctors last week, the concern is that he has three different cancers and they are deciding what will be the best follow up for him. They have decided to go ahead with radiation. So we will soon be contacted to set that up. The number of sessions is in question at this time - somewhere between 10 or 20, I believe. He is regaining his strength after being in the hospital and we are keeping an eye out to avoid any more infections. The cancers that he had are squamous cell carcinoma ( a form of skin cancer), lymphoma, and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia ( a slow acting cancer of the blood). The CLL doesn't come into the treatment but his red/white blood cells are to be monitored. They feel the surgery was successful and the radiation is just to be sure. Hopefully we will be through this by the end of September.

Yes, the dotors were a little concerned about the variety of cancers that he had, but after investigation they determined that the blood cell cancer had little to do with the current situation. He has known about the leukemia for sometime. He had a brother who also had it and it apparently it isn't uncommon to people who grew up on farms and may have come into contact with the chemicals that were used back in the fifties. They will continue to monitor his red/white cell count. Next year I'm determined to start in January with three books per month so that I can reach my Thingaversary total of 19 by June!

Delurking to say I'm sending healing vibes to your husband and hope that his treatment is a complete success! The drive sounds exhausting, and to do it every day! Have you considered getting a place and staying in the area for the duration of the treatment? I know it's more comforting to be at home, but, well, I know I couldn't do those drives anymore without it adversely affecting my physical health. Mentally, I'd be fine - I used to love long drives where I could listen to audiobooks.

too bad Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) doesnt have something for adult patiens and families. thinking about it you might as the social workers at your hospial to see if there is lodging supported by the hosptial hope that helps

When Mom and I go to the hospital for an infusion or whatnot, we really had to figure things out. Mom can’t walk, at least not very far, and needs a wheelchair. Unfortunately, I can’t push her because I walk with a rollator now, myself.
Anyway, we use valet parking (no charge but a gratuity for good service). The valet recognizes us now and goes in and gets a wheelchair and wheels Mom to just inside the door of the hospital where a volunteer then takes over and brings her where she needs to be. The reverse happens when we leave.

We survived our first day of treatment. Our appointment was for 11:00 am. Parking was terrible, we drove around for 25 mins. before getting one. The clinic was running late so we had a long wait period. The actual treatment went fine and now we have to go back tomorrow and do it all again. He is booked for 20 sessions so we will be doing this until the middle of October. Luckily we get weekends and holidays off. One good thing, I did get lots of reading time in today.

Hoping things improve going forward as to the parking situation. Our hospital is like that. A half hour drive and then driving around for forever unless you’ve got a disabled placard or use valet.

If you have the ability to make suggestions to the hospital, it might be worthwhile to ask for a shuttle service. The hospital/clinic I use did that about 2 years ago with just one shuttle. Now they have two and will be adding a couple more due to building a new cancer center. You just call the number and give your location and they whiz to you and give you a ride. They also take you back to your car. A shuttle service doesn't require them to do anything to the parking lot although it's a good idea to number the rows. We actually had a similar service a few years ago but it relied upon volunteer drivers and didn't work out very well.
It's ridiculous that medical facilites want to grow larger and larger but don't consider the difficulity for patients getting wherever they need to go!

I am happy to report that today was much better. Firstly we got parking right at the front in the Handicap section. He was taken on time and finished in 30 mins. Now we have he weekend off. 2 down and 18 to go!

I am wondering if your husband is a book reader. I can't imagine that he is in your volume category, but I know that if I'm just lying in bed my mind needs to be occupied. In my case I always use an audio book to help me move my thinking. Often it puts me to sleep, but that can be very useful.

Hi Joe, yes, my hubby is a reader. I introduced him to books by giving him a Wilbur Smith book about Africa and he loved it. He relies on me to pick his books for him and he prefers adventure stories but avoids anything that he would call "silly" like fantasy. So as long as I can keep him occupied with Westerns, War stories and some mysteries he is happy.

Hi Judy, I understand about looking for a parking spot at the hospital. Hubby goes to the Veteran's Admin hospital, and we are lucky to get the valet parking service when we can. If they are not available, I sometimes drop him off at the entrance and drive around looking for a parking spot. We have a handicap parking tag, but even those spots are often taken. There is a shuttle that we sometimes use.

Happy Thanksgiving from Canada!
We had our Turkey dinner last night . Our youngest daughter and her husband along with my grandson and his girlfriend joined us and a good time was had by all. Today we are go relax, read and rest.

>225 DeltaQueen50: Miss Wonderful was just okay for me, too, but I have loved some of Loretta Chase's other romances! Lord Perfect (book #3 in the Carsington series) is one of my favorites, and Lord of Scoundrels is a lot of fun if you lean into the craziness of the main characters' antics! And Knaves' Wager is a great steamless option. Chase's books do tend to rely on "insta-love," though, or at least "insta-lust."

Bell Canto was my first Patchett too. I've read a few others since then and I think she does a great job with her character development. But so far, this is my favorite.
