I got 2 emails saying I was getting The Power Makers, so if 2 copies show up, I'll definitely be having a giveaway.

Did anyone else get a copy of Admit One? I got home last night and there was a package in the mailbox from an Emmet James. The name sounded vaguely familiar - my ARC copy came from the author himself, with his home address, personally autographed! Can't beat service like that! (Now I *really* hope I like it!)

2- Yeah I got Admit One too. I set it up through Lisa Roe, the online book publicist and it came the exact same way yours did. I enjoyed the book, hope you do too :)

Hi LisaLynne,
Yes, it was so nice to have the Admit One come directly from Emmett James, and that he inscribed it to each of his reviewers. I liked the book; it was a bit rough in the beginning, with that opening letter to Steven Seagal. Overall I thought it was witty and engaging. We're about the same age (OK, I'm a few years older than he!), so I identified with the same films he did. If you haven't seen it, you can read my full review here

If any of you also use Shelfari, there are sometimes banner ads on there for ARCs too. Right now there is one for Stone Creek by Victoria Lustbader. This one is giving away 50 copies, so I don't know how easy it is to get picked...

I just got an email message indicating that I will be receiving a copy of The Aviary Gate. I saw a notice about Shining City by Seth Greenland and Sweet Mandarin on Shelf Awarness and I received notice that I will be receiving those as well. Today has been a good day!

On another note, I got Stone Creek by clicking on the ad on Shelfari. Amazing book and it arrived in a matter of days.

Shelfari is very similar to LT. You post the books you have, are reading, or want. There are great groups to discuss all sorts of books.

A copy of The White Mary arrived in the mail today. It just showed up. However, I got a notice from Henry Holt that they were sending me Bottomfeeder and The Power Makers. Though both e-mails showed a picture of Bottomfeeder so hopefully I'm not getting two copies of that.

Actually, what I found interesting was that the response letter from Henry Holt actually mentions LT as a place to post reviews.

Jun 13, 2008, 12:14 am

Wow, I received "The White Mary" the other day. Next day I got a copy of "Bottomfeeder" Then the next day I got an email telling me I will be receiving "The Power Makers" and then I got another email to tell me I would be receiving "Moody Food" through the SFWP.

Wow! Love It!

A couple of people have mentioned Author Buzz, so I went and looked at their website. Looked interesting, so I thought I'd sign up for the newsletter.

But the only sign up form I found was clearly for the authors. Could someone help this poor newbie? Clearly the Author Buzz would only work (and it must work to judge from the prices!) if readers are getting the newsletter. So how do I get the newsletter?

Thanks!

20twomoredays
Jun 13, 2008, 2:48 am

AuthorBuzz partners with newsletters like Shelf Awareness. Shelf Awareness has a feature in, I think, every issue about it and I assume that's where everyone here is reading it.

21DevourerOfBooks
Jun 13, 2008, 7:57 am

I emailed for Sweet Mandarin but not even for a review copy, but for those signed copies saying after reading it I'd be talking about it on my blog. The author emailed me back last night saying that the signed copies were gone, but she said she really liked my blog and would I like her publisher to send me a review copy.

Moral of the story: if you have a reviewing blog ALWAYS include your url when emailing with authors, publishers, etc.

22lovemybooks

Same happened to me Devourer, I'm glad b/c the book looks interesting.

#21 - That's a really good point! I don't have a book blog but I always include a link to my LT profile page (and sometimes a separate link to my LT review page and my Amazon profile reviews). I figure it lets the authors know that you're serious about reviewing books. Anyone could ask for a free book, but if you show that you really do write reviews (and let them read a sample of your writing) I figure they're more willing to pass out their copies. :)

24JGoto
Jun 13, 2008, 5:49 pm

I also e-mailed her and just said I'd like to enter the contest to get a book to review (I don't have a blog and I didn't mention where I would review it.) and I got a response saying I won the contest in less than a day. I think they are anxious to get copies of the book out there.

#29- With a couple of those, there was a note on the page where you sign up saying the books wouldn't mailed until late in June, like the 20th or 23rd. I don't remember which ones but I've seen that message a couple of times.

I always feel a little frustrated when I go on Shelf-awareness. Either I don't seem to ever get the books they offer ARCS on OR the books that I really want are actually ONLY for sale...right now, there are at least 2 that I would LOVE to read, but the ad is for the sale of the book :(

36- I know. I'm always like "ooh that one looks GREAT, oh it's for sale...." I just started reading the newsletter about 2 weeks ago and have requested a few books. I'm trying to not get my hopes up too much in case nothing actually comes. Shelf Awareness is an interesting newsletter and the possible free books are just an added bonus. No one owes us free books after all. :) Just sayin.

Plus I'm sure a lot more people read this thread than post...meaning each time an offer is posted, they probably get a bunch of requests.

45LisaLynne
Jun 16, 2008, 1:33 pm

No, they don't owe us anything. But if they loved us, they would send us books. :)

And it really seems like they are eager to get as many copies out as possible, which works to our advantage.

What do you guys write in your emails requesting ARC's? I'm not sure if I should write a nice little message about wanting to read and review it on my blog or if I should just get straight to the point and just put my address.

54littlebookworm

I normally say I want a review copy to post reviews here and amazon and my blog, and then give my address. If I really like the sound of the book, I'll include a sentence or two detailing why.

If the ad has the "request a copy" link, I usually just say I'd appreciate a copy to read and review and include my name and address. I've gotten most of the ones I've asked for. If I do a "cold" solicitation, I'll usually give them a link to my LT reviews (since I keep messing with my blog and still don't like the way it looks!). I've gotten a bit more outgoing in the requesting just for the heck of it. A lot of the books on shelf awareness that I'm really interested in, are just ads for purchase, so I figure, nothing ventured nothing gained. Today I sent an email to the author of one advertised book and the publisher of another. I asked them if they have any ARC's available for review. The author has answered already and has forwarded my request to her publicist. He'll probably ignore it, but hey, its worth a shot!!

60mint910
Jun 17, 2008, 10:54 am

59- One day I think I'll try and be gutsy like you! I haven't tried that yet. I just recently started requesting ARC's so I wasn't totally sure what to expect.

Back in the good old days (college) I had a bookstore that would basically give away ARC's they got if you donated a dollar to the school district's summer program or something like that.

61bostonbibliophile
Jun 17, 2008, 11:07 am

#59- I did my first "cold" request to an author recently, and I basically worked every angle I could- my job, my blog, LT, Amazon, etc. I wouldn't say I begged but I reallyreally want the particular book and I just tried to make a great case as to why I'd be a great reviewer. The author sent back a quick one-liner saying he cc'd his publicist; she got back to me right away and said yes. As far as Shelf Awareness, I just say I'd like a copy and give my work address. So far I've received everything I've asked for.

62mint910
Jun 17, 2008, 11:11 am

61- Oh wow everything? I started requesting maybe 2 weeks ago so it's too soon probably for anything to have come. So I wasn't sure what the expect. I guess we will see!

I did get confirmation on Bottomfeeder, Power Makers and Suspicions of Mr. Whicher.

I would like to get more YA ARCs so I took out my catalogs (you can get most publisher's catalogs online now) and looked for the forthcoming books that most appealed to me. Then I googled the authors looking for contact information.

Of the 4 authors I wrote, one sent books already, and the others have forwarded my requests to their publicity people.

I have heard back from one of the 3 publicity people that I contacted when I couldn't find any way to contact the author myself, and they said they would send an ARC if they could find one.

In these requests, I do mention my blog and the authors have said they really like it. I think they can see that I put a lot of effort into my reviews and they appreciate that.

66mint910
Jun 17, 2008, 11:58 am

Shelf Awareness has an ad for "The American Wife" by Curtis Sittenfield

to request an ARC:

email- rhpg @ randomhouse.com
subject line: Shelf Awareness ad for American Wife ARC

68twomoredays
Jun 17, 2008, 1:02 pm

>53 mint910:

I do it that way because publicists are busy and probably aren't going to have time to read what you write/look at your blog/ your LT reviews.

I just got two notifications from Harper Collins that I'm getting books- Superdove and Among Cannibals. Earlier, maybe in the last thread, I believe some people were debating whether their pleas factored in. Now, I'm totally guessing, but it seems likely to me that mine did, simply because I wrote about my previous pigeon-based readings in the one, and my crazy travels in the other, neither of which is all that common. Either way, they said that both books should arrive within two weeks, so here's to hoping. Maybe my ARC arrival luck is turning- I'm waiting on eight books that have been promised over a three month period, plus another three or so that are uncertain. Finally, one arrived, but at my forwarding address! Alas. At least I will have a new book waiting for me when I arrive at my new home.

Yeah... poop on HC. Shelf Awareness is better :-p lol. I just tried again for Ghost Radio, this time writing a much better note begging, really, and mentioning the deadline's my birthday, but they only allow one entry. Dough looks really good, too, so I used the same note requesting it (I took out "Ghost Radio" and I love Stephen King... it didn't seem to fit with a humorous book). So we'll see if begging works. I wonder for Harper Collins instead of trying through First Look emailing them directly like some people have been doing on here, either through the author, publicist etc. I wonder if that would be the back door in?

88Irisheyz77
Jun 17, 2008, 8:11 pm

Harper Collins can be hit or miss. I've gotten three books from them so far, and have just received word that I'm getting a 4th. My messages to them are usually very short. I usually just write that I would love the opportunity to read the book and then post my URL. I then wait to see which, if any, of the books I've signed up for I get.

If you like young adult books be sure to look at www.harperteen.com they too have a first look program. Log in info is the same as for their main page but the books are different - geared towards teens. Two of the HC books I received were were through HC teen.

89Joles
Edited: Jun 17, 2008, 8:32 pm

I don't get anything from HC teen, either. They much have it in for me! I'll remember that when purchasing books.

*Note to self: If deciding between HC and any other publisher go with the latter!*

Actually, as I look at my shelves I'm reminded of how much I truly dislike HC. I bought a book from them that was missing pages. They told me tough luck and that I'd have to go look for it and purchase another copy at a book store. I was furious! And I still don't know what happens in the last 3/4 of the book. Grr...

91Nitestar

I actually seem to have the opposite problem some of you have - I have been pretty lucky with HC - they have been very good to me but have had horrible luck with Shelf-Awareness. Luckily, I do reviews for some great online sites and get many of my books (not necessarily ARCS) from them.

I have also emailed a few authors directly and nicely asked for ARCS and have had some success with that. I have emailed some of the publishing houses directly for some ARCS and they usually have told me that the specific book I was hoping for does not actually have an ARC edition.

I was looking at my Shelf Awareness today and saw what I guess is an ad for The Practical Progressive. When I click on it, I get more ad and a way to order copies. As a newbie to all this, is this a way I could inquire into a review copy?

Thank you to everyone for all the guidance. I love feeling in the loop!

This thread has been so helpful for me. Thanks to everyone who has posted their leads!

I see a lot of complaints about HarperCollins, so maybe this will help. I received this is in a FirstLook Canada letter that might be of interest:

"Are you an avid reader and a blogger? If so, you may be interested in some exciting opportunities for even more free books ahead of publication, please e-mail us at firstlookcanada@harpercollins.com"

Americans might give it a shot by removing canada from the e-mail (that's a guess, I don't know if that will work) to see if there is something similar for the US.

Also, you can read Invisible Armies (thriller by Jon Evans) free online at HarperCollins Canada MySpace Page until June 30th.

I am so stoked! My UPS man just dropped of The Boat for my reading pleasure. That was super fast! I requested the Penguin Classic book a month ago, and still haven't received it... this book came in less than a week! three days, to be exact :-D

I just got my copy of The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher -- gorgeous hardcover. I can't wait to start reading. It was mailed from New York on the 18th, and I'm in Pennsylvania. I imagine they'll be turning up for the rest of you guys soon!

It was a great day. I received 3 books today!

The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher and Bottomfeeder which I had requested from Shelf Awareness.

I also recieved a copy of Names of the Land which I had hoped to get in the ER thread...but was not chosen for. It just appeared on my doorstep today from Random House. I definitely didn't request it specifically. But I am happy as a clam!

Oooh! Thanks, MidnightRain. I'm in Ohio, so hopefully there will be good news in the mailbox!

I have got to set aside some reading time this weekend. I'm preparing for a trip and there is so much to get done, but hopefully I can finish my current book and knock out another before I leave.

112Nitestar
Jun 22, 2008, 9:12 am

I am not sure if this is the right place to put my question - but here goes...

Does anyone know if an ARC is created for every single book the publishers are going to issue? I ask this because I have written to a few publishing houses requesting specific books and the response, in most cases, has been "this book does not have an ARC".

113mint910
Jun 22, 2008, 11:35 am

112- I really don't know. But, I believe for example that there weren't arc's for some of the twilight series books, or all of them. I think there was an article about that a little while back. I really doubt there were any for Harry Potter either. But besides big hush hush books like those, I'm not really sure.

114lenoreva
Edited: Jun 22, 2008, 12:34 pm

Advance reading copies (ARCs) are typically glossy publications resembling the final publication more closely than galleys or uncorrected bound proofs, often reproducing the artwork and design that the publisher intended to use. Recent developments in printing and publication have served to blur these distinctions and it is now common to see glossy, illustrated covers and publication and publicity details on books which call themselves galleys and uncorrected bound proofs. Even so, the typical process remains galleys, uncorrected bound proof, advance reading copy and then publication. Not all novels go through all the processes. Some may only have a few galleys and uncorrected proofs. Usually, publishers only create a lot of ARCs for the books they really want to push because it is quite expensive to do a publishing run and then send them all out.

I have been up and down this thread and I keep seeing a reference to "author's buzz" what is this and where do I find it?

116lovemybooks
Jun 22, 2008, 12:57 pm

authorbuzz.com/dearreader.
As Lenoreva said, ARC's are not made for every book in fact I've had authors tell me they feel quite lucky if they get one. and they are generally not made for series books after the first one, though obviously there are always exceptions.

117mint910
Jun 22, 2008, 12:58 pm

115- If I remember correctly what they were talking about was the author buzz section inside of the shelf awareness newsletter. It's a section of the newsletter that appears several times a week. To subscribe to shelf awareness you just need to visit their website http://shelf-awareness.com/
Hope that helps :)

118icedtea

For those who have received books that were from Shelf Awareness ads - do you remember what the turnaround time was between your request and receiving the book?
I requested The Heretic's Daughter but since the release date is September 3, I'm thinking it could be a while.

119twomoredays
Jun 22, 2008, 3:23 pm

re: turnaround time

The Heartbreak Diet - Requested 5/29 - Not yet received

The Power Makers - Requested 6/5 - Not yet received

The White Mary - Requested 6/5 - Received 6/12

Bottomfeeder - Requested 6/5 - Received 6/21

The other ones I've requested were just this week, so I'm not including those.

120lovemybooks
Jun 22, 2008, 7:25 pm

I've had the turnaround time be as long as six weeks. There is an author buzz section inside of shelf awareness that appears twice a week, but the books are different from the ones on the website (sometimes) so you might want to check out the website, too! They often offer contests as well.

Jun 22, 2008, 7:37 pm

Question from a newbie here:

So I just signed up on the Shelf Awarenss sight, and I saw the new Terry Pratchett graphic novels that I'd love to read.

So what do I do now? Are all the books listed available as ARCs? There's no link there for that book. Does that mean it's not available?

Sorry to be so obtuse, but I haven't done this before.

122jennsbookshelves

I just received Sweet Mandarin and I'd say I requested it about a week or so ago.

123lovemybooks
Jun 22, 2008, 9:25 pm

Hi Cmbohn,

Usually the ads in the newsletter will specifically make an offer for ARCs or free copies.

You can always write to request review copies if you like, though

124Kegsoccer
Jun 22, 2008, 9:26 pm

Usually the newsletter advertises ARCs. If you watch the banners, some will say 'click here for an ARC'. Others are simply advertising books. Sometimes though if you find something you really want to read, and you contact the publisher or the author, you can get an ARC. But no, sadly not all the books listed are/have ARCs.

I know this was mentioned through Shelf Awareness, but if anyone's still interested, American Wife was mentioned in the Random House Reader's Circle email too:

"SPECIAL OFFER
AMERICAN WIFE (available in stores September 2nd) is Curtis Sittenfeld's most compelling novel yet. The bestselling author of PREP and THE MAN OF MY DREAMS, introduces us to Alice Blackwell, an ordinary woman thrust into extraordinary circumstances when she becomes first lady of the United States. Here is the story, of how a kind, bookish, only child born in the 1940s Midwest came to inhabit a life of dizzying wealth and power. You will not be able to put down this incredible story.

We can't wait to share this story with you so we have set aside a limited quantity for our readers. ARGGHH!! I give up with Shelf-Awareness. I have emailed about quite a few books and have never gotten one single book - maybe because I live in Canada??? I know that the quantities are limited, but I keep reading here how most of you are getting one, two and in some cases more than that from this site!!! Like I said, ARGGHHH!H!! On the other hand, I love HarperCollins First Look program. I guess you can't win them all.

I received The Watercooler Effect today. I can't wait to start this one, it sounds so interesting!

I'm just the opposite, I've gotten the old zip, zilch, nada from HarperCollins First Look and have received six books from ads in Shelf-Awareness. (One wasn't an ad for a giveaway, but an ad for the book, but I asked the author and she had her publicist send me a copy). I've pretty much given up on HC, but I'll probably keep trying, cockeyed optimist that I am!

198NovelBookworm
Jun 27, 2008, 2:23 pm

I should add, I never get a confirmation email from any of the shelf-awareness ads, with the exception of Bloomsbury. They've always let me know if they're sending a book, the others just show up.

198-I agree. I've been subscribed to Shelf Awareness for about 2 weeks. I've received probably 3 emails confirming that a book has been sent, but the majority of the time they just send the book. I have about 6 books to review!

190: I've not had problems receiving ARCs from Harper Collins, although they do come ridiculously late.

On the other hand, has anyone received a book from Random House? I've requested a few that looked really interesting and gotten nothing. (Maybe they'll eventually show up together with my mysterious Penguin Classic?)

I remember reading somewhere that somebody had gotten their peguin classic! It gave me hope that, someday, mine will also arrive :)

205detailmuse
Jun 27, 2008, 3:44 pm

I emailed Penguin, asking if they had an estimated ship date for the classic. No response yet. It's a UK site, I'm wondering how that might affect US participants?

Jun 27, 2008, 3:47 pm

I've been reading Shelf Awareness for 3 weeks to a month and haven't gotten anything from it. I requested maybe 8-10 books. I got an email about the Water Cooler Effect being out of galleys, they asked if a mini bound manuscript would work. That's all I've heard from anyone regarding my requests through SA. I think it's just a mystery!

I got my Penguin classic about three weeks ago. I read somewhere else they are sending them out in batches but that the response was overwhelming

The book fairy driving the big brown truck just brought me a book that I requested "cold".
I noticed on another thread that someone had an ARC of a book called Sweetheart by Chelsea Cain, and I really liked her debut novel. I emailed the publisher on Monday to inquire, sent them a link to my brand spankin' new blog, and my page here on LT and....voila....the book came today UPS 2nd day air. I was just taking a long shot and since they didn't respond to my email, I did not expect that!

Down side...the TBR pile is beginning to teeter. I sure hope those books I ordered from the library last month don't come in for a while.

#208 klmnca: My MT. TBR has overflowed out of the shelves beside me and onto the desktop. I keep the ARCs and books I've promised to review on the desk in easy sight and reach. I'm only on P&P in my Jane-a-thon, and have 4 more after that. I don't expect to get to any of the desk residents until maybe Thursday next, maybe not even until Saturday, at my current pace of 2 days per book. Of course... if I would stay off the computer......

Should we start a Canadian version of this thread for posting sources that send books to Canadians?

212bostonbibliophile
Jun 27, 2008, 6:27 pm

210 and Nitestar- wasn't there a message in the original "Other places to get ARCs" thread that answered this? I think it was something about having or not having distribution rights in different countries and these rules applying to ARCs as well as finished versions of books. Maybe this is why? You could always ask the Shelf Awareness people too or check the site for a policy statement.

213Nitestar
Jun 27, 2008, 7:38 pm

Bostonbibliophile - I actually did email the site and I have never gotten a response :(

It makes me feel better to read that I am not alone though.

214silverheron
Jun 27, 2008, 8:48 pm

I wonder if there is a Canadian version of Shelf-Awareness. When I read the newsletter it seems to be completely focused on US news. It seems like the Canadians on this thread do really well with the Canadian Harper Collins site but those in the US do terrible at HC. Then for Shelf awareness the other is true. I for one have never gotten a book from HC but have done very well with Shelf Awareness here in California. Does this hold true for everyone? If this holds true we need to find a "Shelf-Awareness Canada" site for the rest of us. No fun without them in the conversation!

215bostonbibliophile
Jun 27, 2008, 8:59 pm

Nitestar, you might also check the fine print on some of the offers, or ask the publishers directly. I don't know what else you can do if the publishers don't answer your questions though.

I put up FirstLook and Booklounge. There must be more, right?

For those of you who've received and read The Gargoyle, does it get less gruesome at some point? I'm about 32 pages in, and while it's excellent so far, it's really disturbing with all the graphic descriptions of his burn issues. I'm just wondering if my stomach will be flipping through the whole book. I'm at the debridement part, and it's particularly icky. I'll never look at my potato peeler in the same way.

220DevourerOfBooks
Jun 29, 2008, 6:26 pm

It gets waaaay less grusome very soon. There is still the odd grusome part, but the focus will shift.

221virginiahomeschooler
Jun 29, 2008, 6:39 pm

Ok, thanks. I kind of figured it had to. Well, I was hoping it would at least. It's really well-wriiten, but it's pretty painful reading this stuff. As long as I know it won't last for the next 440 pages, I'll be fine.

I can't even remember if I asked for any from HC or not. I know that the line up did not interest me very much so I may not have. I also am not inclined to request any because I have not had any luck with them in the past. "Cynical Me" :)

I got double the emails on ghost radio too. Maybe it's a double negative so it will show up?

I received said book as a gift order from Amazon and have no idea where it came from.

M 223: Same! Only I'm getting The Dracula Dossier. Very cool.

I just arrived in San Francisco after a 10 day roadtrip from NY, only to find 6 arcs waiting for me. Like Christmas in June! Except that now I have to read them all at once, before school starts. Still, they all look so good that I think I can do it.

I just received my first book through them, The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher, which I'm very much looking forward to reading (although I'm hoping it won't be too graphic). Hi,

I'd read, in forums, about other people recieving ARCs of books I liked, but I never thought to persue the same thing. So, um, could someone tell me how I would go about doing that? I registered on Shelf Awareness but Im not too sure how it works yet. Also, what other sites can I use to find and receive ARCs. I'd appreciate any responses.

241lovemybooks
Jul 6, 2008, 12:55 am

The most direct way is to contact the publisher and request one. Shelf Awareness is a newsletter that sometimes has advertisements for ARCs. Harper Collins has a First Look program where you can try to win one. All of the these threads contain this information. :)

242Kegsoccer
Jul 6, 2008, 1:37 am

The shelf awareness emails occasionally have ARC ads. Watch the banners b/c they change. Some will say, click here for an ARC while supplies last.

(If you're confused, don't worry-- the oppurtunities for shelf awareness ARCs are usually posted here.)
