1) What book did you just finish?
I've been dragging my feet on several books, but I finally recently finished Short Works of Lord Dunsany.
2) Did you like it or dislike it?
Liked it! Good stuff. :)
3) What did you like best?
His prose, and the content of the stories. As one of the early masters of fantasy, he certainly could spin a good yarn, and it was great fun to wander along with him through arcane lore and imaginary worlds. The more down-to-earth stories about World War I were also quite moving.
Many of the stories were extremely short, some no more than a few paragraphs, which made them quite accessible and quick to read (a good thing for busy people). The nice, solid hardcover and the high quality and pleasant feel of the paper were also enjoyable. :)
4) What was the worst part of the book?
His prose. :D His style, while enjoyable to read for those of us who like it, is not for everyone, and probably best not imitated by most modern writers. Ursula K. LeGuin in fact mentioned this in an essay.
Actually, the "worst" part was that the book itself contained a number of typographical errors. This seemed unfortunate.
5) Was it better or worse than you expected?
I didn't necessarily have any specific expectations. He was an influence on many writers, playwrights, movie-makers, etc., including H.P. Lovecraft who is another of my favorites, so I'd been eager to read Dunsany for some time and see what he was like.
6) Would you recommend it?
Yes, at least to lovers of fantasy, or to readers of authors or other artists who were influenced by Dunsany and would like to become acquainted with some of Dunsany's work.
7) What are you reading next?
I'm finishing up Farid Esack's The Qur'an: A User's Guide, and hope to soon start on a book from or about India, possibly Motiba's Tattoos, The Bandit Queen of India, or Joothan: A Dalit's Life.

Last night I finished The Ascent of Money by Niall Ferguson
It had some usable facts and serious thinking in it, but seemed pretty light weight. It perhaps should have been a 600 page book.
I liked that it was pretty up to date.
But it was too chatty.
It was not nearly as good as I expected from the author of The House of Rothschild.
It could be useful to other people. If I had a way of predicting its utility, I might recommend it.
My next book to be started this evening is likely to be one of twenty or so that I have lined up closest to my bed. That could change before I go to bed.
Robert

1)What book did you just finish?
People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks

I felt that the author could have made the main character more personable.
5)Was it better or worse than you expected?
I had high explectations of this book in a different way. I was left wishing it had more detail of the past. But I do feel that this is one of the better books that I have read this year.
6)Would you recommend it?
If someone has a passion for books, wanting to understand the past of an old book, I would recommend it.

It was just ok not as good as I expected it to be

It was an interesting take on the Salem Witch Trials
I guess the most interesting part of the book was the postscript where the author reveals she is a descendant of one of the victims of the witch trials.
4)What was the worst part of the book?
Was very predictable had the whole story figured out pretty quick. It also started out really slow and took awhile to get going
5)Was it better or worse than you expected?
I would say worse its had alot of buzz and I guess I thought it wouldn't be so predicable
6)Would you recommend it?
Maybe--It was a different take on the witch trials

Worse because I loved The Shadow in the Wind and really expected to love this one.

2)Did you like it or dislike it?
I disliked it.

When I read the last sentence.
4)What was the worst part of the book?
The following sentence: "The woman swallowed, a bony ball moving within her thin, withered neck."
5)Was it better or worse than you expected?
Worse, but most recent Regency romances have disappointed me. When you've got Austen and Georgette Heyer, and even early Mary Balogh to compare with, it's hard to stack up.
6)Would you recommend it?
No.
7)What are you reading next?

Silk by Alessandro Baricco

Its depth in a slender volume, and lyrical language. Like a fable. With a memorable message of love and giving, as well as a moral that can be read different ways.

1)What book did you just finish?
Definitely Dead by, Charlaine Harris- Sookie Stackhouse #6
2)Did you like it or dislike it?

3)What did you like best?
There was a few big secrets revealed in this one so that was the best part.
4)What was the worst part of the book?
I have the boxed set and when you buy a boxed set the story should flow uninterrupted. So that is the worst part of the book.
5)Was it better or worse than you expected?

6)Would you recommend it?
If your reading this series I would recommend you find the book A Touch of Dead which should be Book 5 1/2

1)Number the Stars (for fun)
2) I liked it a lot
3) I liked the tence parts, and Kirsti's (the little sister in the book who is 7 years old) imagination.

5) It was actually better than I thought it would be.
6) I would recommend it. It's a very very fast read since it only has about 137 pages.
7) Honestly, I don't know what I'm going to read next.

1)What book did you just finish?
Under the Dome by Stephen King
2)Did you like it or dislike it?
On the whole I enjoyed it.
3)What did you like best?
The hellish end of the towns Second Selectmen.
4)What was the worst part of the book?
The major drawback is by the middle third of the book there are so many characters that the the story gets confusing as Sk jumps between them, sometimes a whole chapters are only 1 or 2 paragraphs. This changing point of view robs the story of its natural flow.
5)Was it better or worse than you expected?
This was the first new SK book that I have read in years, and I would say it was better than I expected.
6)Would you recommend it?
I think most Sk fans won't be disapointed. (I give it 2 1/2 to 3 stars)
7)What are you reading next?.
A Sailor's Life by Jan De Hartog (Touchstones goes to wrong book)
After the epic Under the Dome, I need to still my mind. After looking in my TBR pile I found this book.
In 1955 Jan De Hartog was an author of some repute of books about sailors and the sea, a young boy after reading one of his books decided to go to sea and wrote him to for his advice on going to sea. This book was the resault of that request.

4)What was the worst part of the book?

7)What are you reading next?
I'm reading Too Many Cooks by Rex Stout. I just found an excellent copy at the Thrift Store. It's a re-read - I've read every Nero Wolfe - and am trying to build my collection up again. It was a mistake, but I got rid of all my ratty old Nero Wolfes when I moved to North Carolina 18 years ago. I'm ever so slowly building back up.

I liked it.I'm surprised I did.

1)What book did you just finish? A Dead Hand: A Crime in Calcutta by Paul Theroux
2)Did you like it or dislike it? There were parts I liked and parts I disliked. It's not really the kind of book I like, but it was a gift from my husband (because it is about India, and I am currently semi-obsessed with India).
3)What did you like best? Paul Theroux is a lyrical writer. His descriptions sing. He also gets self descriptive in a very tongue-in-cheek way. He talks about the writer's life, and he actually has his main character MEET Paul Theroux and describe him (he doesn't much like him). All of that is witty and fun.
4)What was the worst part of the book? The descriptions of massages and the sex scenes are not my cup of tea. OTOH, they are well written.
5)Was it better or worse than you expected? Better in some ways, worse in others. On the whole, I guess better. Great writing, great descriptions. Blah plot.
6)Would you recommend it? It depends on what you want. As a best-seller wannabe, it's not all that bad. As a book to learn more about India? Nope. As a book to consider some of the pitfalls of philanthropy? Yes, maybe.
7)What are you reading next? For fun? Not sure. Maybe Simply Christian the other book my husband bought for my birthday. Maybe The Nymph and the Lamp which my son has been recommending. In real life? Back to books about German theology and usury debates of the 16th century.

I had initial thoughts that it was going to be one of those books loads of people enjoy but i just don't get, but it is not.
I am going to read Angels and Demons next, and then my boyfriend is lending me Digital Fortress and Deception Point :)

1)What book did you just finish?
The Final Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a collection of other Holmesian works that the editor argues complete the canon.
2)Did you like it or dislike it?
I enjoyed it very much.
3)What did you like best?
One of the items in the book is a poem Doyle wrote to counter a poem written to him concerning Holmes's less than flattering remarks about Dupin. It was extremely funny and I like thinking of it as a very polite smackdown.
4)What was the worst part of the book?
Some of the stories weren't very good and were included more for curiousity's sake. I like them from a completist standpoint, but they weren't all that enjoyable on their own.
5)Was it better or worse than you expected?
The reviews I read of it were no favorable, so it was definitely better than I expected.

1. What book did you just finish?
George Washington In the American Revolution by James Thomas Flexner
2. Did you like it or dislike it?
Like It
3. What did you like best?
The Subject (as in George Washington).
4. What was the worst part of the book?
Consistently satisfied throughout, so none.
5. Was it better or worse than you expected?
Can not remember or never had expectations.
6. Would you recommend it?
Should be considered an obligation to those who call themselves Americans. Why? The United States would not exist(multiple times some of which are not even in this volume) without George Washington. Not the best military mind but one of the very best military and civilian leaders (perhaps best?). One thing that was surprising is that Washington was apparently a very good spymaster.
