Ross and Tom; two American Tragedies*
by John Leggett
*The 1st name references are to novelists Ross Lockridge (Raintree County) and Thomas Heggen (Mr. Roberts); both died young.
Ironically, to my mind, biographer John Leggett, a little-published novelist, is probably better than either of them.

Anna Karenina
Leo Tolstoy
I am currently rereading this, but I don't know why. If I read one more time about a man's smiling and "showing his strong white teeth," read about a woman's "little hand" (Didn't any of the women back then in Russia have big hands?) or read the phrase "at the bottom of his/her heart" I think I shall scream. Maybe I'm just not sophisticated enough to enjoy/appreciate "great" literature, but it seems to me that, even though the story is interesting and tells a lot about Russian living during that time period, Tolstoy, like many others, is more interested in how many words he can write and tends to be a bit verbose. After reading the above, I see that also tend to be a bit verbose. lol

DeltaQueen, I read it when I was younger, also, and when I first started this time, I thought it was more interesting. Why, you may ask? Darned if I know. I still have about 1/3 of an inch of pages to go, and I willfinish it, come hell or high water.

*This was my "Bible" on world languages when I was high school age.
Another of my books, read much later, contains a very unfavorable review of Bodmer, and that only influenced me to have an unfavorable view of the reviewer. But it may have affected my
awarding of stars, to a free copy of Bodmer that I acquire a few years ago. I notice now that I gave bodmer only 2 stars.
