Description

Inspector Henry Tibbett's better half, wife Emmy, takes center stage in a WWII mystery To date, Emmy Tibbett has been something of a secondary character-a placid, pleasantly plump presence who serves mostly to make her detective-husband Henry all the more likeable. With Johnny, however, Emmy at last gets a turn in the spotlight, as she and Henry head off for the 20th reunion of her Royal Air Force squad. It's a bittersweet trip for Emmy: She loved her work with the RAF, and she was in love show more with one of the pilots, but their happiness ended abruptly when he killed himself, crashing his plane into the North Sea. But was it suicide? At the reunion, Emmy is startled to realize that she may have been the last person to see her sweetheart alive. And she's more than startled to discover that virtually everyone connected with that fatal flight had something to hide. show less

Really good. I put a lot of thought into trying to solve the puzzle until about two-thirds of the way through, when I got lost in the suspense. I really enjoy Chief Inspector Tibbett as a character and you never really expect him to go "intrepid" but he always seems to by the end of the book. The characters are interesting and the flashbacks to the days on a WWII Royal Air Force Base feel really realistic. My one complaint is that Emmy Tibbett really has no excuse for being such a bloody idiot; at times she's more like a Victorian heroine to whom things just happen while she sits there passively. But, reading the series in random order, I don't at this point have a good feel for the overall development of the characters, so maybe she show more becomes more sensible in later books. Even so, she's pushing 40 in this one. show less

Epigraph
JOHNNYLLE

Älä mieti murhemiellä
Johnnya ilman tiellä.
Hän nukkuu yhtä rauhaisaan
kuin Johnny alla maan.

Pois käärinliinat heitä,
Johnny käy pilviteitä,
pidätä kyyneleet
kun häntä... (show all) muistelet.

Parempi paljon hälle,
Johnnylle, lentäjälle,
kun tyynin mielin vaan
huolehdit lapsistaan.
