Now THIS is what a cookbook should be. Nothing precise, no quarter-teaspoon of anything, just a bit of butter or a sprinkle of oregano. A cookbook for the confident, a lovely excursion for those unwilling to dive in. David had as sure a hand with prose as she did with food. My copy came from Laurie and has been languishing in the TBR pile for far too long.

Recommended!
Elizabeth David's (1913 - 1992) fourth book, published in 1955. A lovely theme with promises of the very best of British produce and home cooking. Such unexpected dishes as Mushrooms in Grouse Stock provide constant interest and there is plenty of encouragement to put under-employed ingredients, such as sorrel, to good use.
You know... I remember enjoying this one. But I don't really remember anything about it. That's not good, right? Still - it is written by my beloved Elizabeth David.
