Description

Max Frisch's candid story of his affair with a young woman illuminates a lifetime of relationships.Casting himself as both subject and observer, Frisch reflects on his marriages, children, friendships, and careers; a holiday weekend in Long Island is a trigger to recount and question events and aspects of his own life, along with creeping fears of mortality. He paints a bittersweet portrait that is sometimes painful and sometimes humorous, but always affecting. Emotionally raw and formally show more innovative, Frisch’s novel collapses the distinction between art and life, but leaves the reader with a richer understanding of both. show less

Caveat lector: I only read this because it features heavily in my winter reading, 'Martutene' by Roman Saizabitoria.

That out of the way, this was quite dull. The idea is a nice one--report honestly on a hopeless love affair--but for the most part the honest reporting seems to have been a few physical movements, then some uninteresting thoughts, followed by more physical movements. I know very well that I'm not moved by this kind of thing; even Greene's End of the Affair left me cold. So, maybe you'll like it more than I did. But the writing is dull (perhaps the translation?), and the whole thing grew particularly annoying after Max had some interesting thoughts about something other than his young lover, and never bothered to return to show more that mode. Had this been half the length, it might have worked.

Great cover, though.

Eccellente.
Challenging but rewarding. As some have said, this is what the modern day memoir is, but Frisch is brutally honest and extremely observing. Depicts Long Island wonderfully.
Montauk is a book full of thoughts. It is full of thoughts continously streaming through the Text and pouring into the reader's face and thoughts. It is an easy read if you want it to be an easy read, but if you search for meaning the text lures you with deep insights.

The book is written in a somewhat confusing shift between a first-person perspective and third person perspective. It seems to be a stream of consciousness, but it is by far not as intermittent as James Joyce.
A quick read, and not bad, but I can't really recommend it. It is mostly one long string of thoughts, some of those thoughts quite interesting, but I did not care much for the way the thoughts are strung together.
