My copy of this book is falling apart just like an old pulp magazine might be. I almost think it was engineered that way. A great collection of old stories from the pages of Weird Tales, All-Story Magazine, Amazing Stories, Detective Magazine and others. They certainly don't write stuff like this anymore. Very short stories by Upton Sinclair, Max Brand, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Sinclair Lewis, Dashiell Hammett, Hugo Gernsback, Ray Bradbury and many others famous and a few forgotten. Hard to pick a favorite story but I give the nod to "The Resurrection of Jimber-Jaw" by ER Burroughs. A fun book.
Science fiction and horror are not my cup of tea. However, having said that, the selection of such stories from the heyday of pulp fiction was quite good. If you're a science fiction/fantasy/horror fan and want a good representation of these stories from the 1920s through 1950s pulp magazines, pick this book up. You won't be disappointed.

Each story is prefaced with a historical footnote on the particular magazine which first ran it, giving insight into the history and politics at the time as well as some character profiles about the authors, which really set the mood for the following stories.
Half way through the book there is also a bonus 10 page llustrated Section dedicated to the pulp artists.

Manacled - by Stephen Crane

Fire breaks out in a packed theatre. One man is left manacled on stage, fighting for dear life as the flames engulfs the building.

A Thousand Deaths - by Jack London

A seaman left drowning in San Francisco bay awakes strapped to a resuscitation machine; but, the success of this first experiment in re-animation leads to an increased succession of cruel show more and unusual experiments on him.

Author's Adventure - by Upton Sinclair

Mark Lewis, successful short story writer, boasted to his friends that in order for his Adventure stories to sound believable they actually had to be felt, and that included the Murders - all in the mind anyway. But fate was about to teach him a deadly lesson.
