Friday warm-up
Books read from: Susan, Linda, Nina, and Cokie: The Extraordinary Story of the Founding Mothers of NPR by Lisa Napoli. Loki's Ring by Stina Leicht. I am listening to Britt-Marie Was Here by Fredrik Backman.

Books finished:

Book Thoughts: I am deep into reading Susan, Linda, Nina, and Cokie and am about half done. This book is turning out to be a short history of NPR and is very engaging. It also has lots to say about the news business and the reader can see the roots of our current mess with disinformation coming. It is also full of information about how long it took to get women into the news media as a whole.

Non-Book activities: It is game night in our little town, so the community will gather at the community center to play games. There will be young and old alike. I am baking a King Cake for the occasion (complete with baby), even though it shouldn't be served until after Easter. I love this little gathering and so decided that it would be OK to flaunt the rules of the season and serve the King Cake. While waiting for it to raise (I make a yeasted coffee cake type of King Cake) I am trying to clean out my accumulated e-mail.

Time reading: 1 hour this morning
Time posting:
Food: the last of the Tortilla Soup and boy was it good! Perfect for this cold wintery day.

Total books finished since the Read-A-Thon Began: 390

Friday night update:

I finished the audio of All the Devils Are Here. I mostly listen to audiobooks in the car for about an hour a day on my way to and from work. It should have taken me 2 weeks or more to listen to a 14-hour audiobook, but I finished this in under a week. I just couldn't put it down.

Supper was biscuits and chocolate gravy at a friend's house. It was my first experience with chocolate gravy, and I loved it!

Sat a.m.

Books: Sweetness of Water and Her Last Lie by J.S. Lark, audio ed.
Still aiming to read 1 short story a day. Finished Tales: Short Stories Featuring Ian Rutledge and Bess Crawford by Charles Todd.

Had a fun dinner party last night - the husbands cooked. 3 couples from the neighborhood. The host made the entree, one husband made a chocolate-cherry cheescake (!), and my Bob made his squash-apple soup for the 1st course. I contributed a platter of tapas. All enjoyed the occasion and I'm hosting the next one in March.

I'll be reading but it will be another active weekend with my sister. We have a week together to work on family history, photos, and other projects. My granddaughter will be visiting nearby and I'll have time with her too.

Partly sunny, 45 F.

Books read from: Susan, Linda, Nina, and Cokie: The Extraordinary Story of the Founding Mothers of NPR by Lisa Napoli. Loki's Ring by Stina Leicht. I am listening to Britt-Marie Was Here by Fredrik Backman and Summer Before the War by Helen Simonson.

Books finished:

Book Thoughts: I am just engrossed by Susan, Linda, Nina, and Cokie and am still having fun listening to Britt-Marie Was Here. Summer Before the War isn't going as well.

Non-Book activities: I am trying to get the neighborhood kids to help me and my sister take about a bed and get it into the pickup. We are going to take it to my nephew tomorrow and make a two day trip out of it. Reading by the light of the early morning sun has got to be one of the great joys of my retirement.

Sunday morning report
Books read from: Susan, Linda, Nina, and Cokie: The Extraordinary Story of the Founding Mothers of NPR by Lisa Napoli. Loki's Ring by Stina Leicht. I am listening to Britt-Marie Was Here by Fredrik Backman and Summer Before the War by Helen Simonson.

Books finished: Susan, Linda, Nina, and Cokie: The Extraordinary Story of the Founding Mothers of NPR.

Book Thoughts: I got involved with Susan, Linda, Nina, and Cokie and read late into the night as well as early this morning. It was a very engrossing story. I have been a long time supporter of NPR and didn't know about the early years because we didn't have NPR out here in the boondocks so there was lots of information about NPR that I didn't know. I noticed that Bob Edwards died not too long ago and thought that perhaps I should read about it. Our library had this book, so I nabbed it and am glad that I did.

Non-Book activities: We got the bed loaded up and this afternoon we will head off for Atkinson, NE. I have never been in that area before, so this will be a grand adventure with my sister.

Time reading: 3 hours. 2 last night when reading in bed, and 1 this morning
Time posting:
Food: King Cake, croissant and my Churchill tea from the London Tea House in St. Louis for breakfast.

Non-Book activities: I managed to sprain my ankle last night, so I'm not doing anything that isn't book-related :-(

Thoughts: Gerbe en germes - Pake grenn is a collection of haïkus written in French and adapted in Creole. It's a great exercise for transliterating the two languages: when I manage to, there are delightful surprises!

Sunday night update:

Books read from: The Girls of Atomic City
Books finished:
Time reading: Not much
Time posting: ?
Snacks: Supper was leftover lentil soup, toast with apple butter, and a tangerine
Non-book activities: Not much reading time today. I went to church this morning, then went out to lunch with a friend before going to a 90th birthday reception for a woman I've known about as long as I can remember. We had some time to kill between lunch and the reception, but every place we thought to go was either closed or we couldn't find parking. We ended up walking around the University of Tennessee gardens. I was able to read for a while when I got home, then I walked Adrian. A neighbor came over to eat leftover soup with me and we watched a couple of episodes of Father Brown. I finished knitting a hat for my brother's birthday next Sunday, then unloaded the entertainment center so it can go away tomorrow when some friends from church come to assemble my new one for me. I'm hoping the new TV arrives tomorrow so that I can get it set up.

I'm not really on holiday today, despite the National one on the calendar, so I'll just include the few hours from my way-too-early rise-before-the-sun morning. A good weekend for this activity!

Books read from: Poopie Suits and Cowboy Boots, Frank Hood (Kindle); Rise of the Federation: Tower of Babel, Christopher L. Bennett; Mozart, Jan Swafford; The Struggle for Sea Power: A Naval History of the American Revolution, Sam Willis; Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race, Margot Lee Shetterly; The Curious Incident of the Dog in the night-time, Mark Haddon.

Time reading:

Sat: 6.25
Sun: 5.5
Mon: 1.5

Snacks: tea, coffee, slice of king cake pie
Thoughts: Great quote from MLKjr in Hidden Figures about LT Uhura on the original Star Trek series. I loved learning that he thought her role in the show as a Black woman was important as showing Black people in the future and in command roles... and that he and his family were Trekkies!

Monday afternoon holiday report
Books read from: Loki's Ring by Stina Leicht. I am listening to Britt-Marie Was Here by Fredrik Backman and Summer Before the War by Helen Simonson.

Books finished: Susan, Linda, Nina, and Cokie: The Extraordinary Story of the Founding Mothers of NPR.

Book Thoughts: I took Loki's Ring with me on the trip and read about half of the book. I hope to have time to read a good deal of it tonight.

Non-Book activities: My sister and I took apart a bed and loaded into the pickup (with help from some younger relatives. We then left after church yesterday and drove it up to northern Nebraska to my nephews. It was a pleasant drive. I wanted to stop and have coffee with a friend of ours on the way back but my sister was in a hurry so we just drove up - put the bed together - stayed overnight - and drove back. I didn't get a great night's sleep even though I dropped $125 on a room at the Holiday Inn in O'Neill, Nebraska. I have caught a cold from the neighbor kids and have a feeling that I am going to be goodly and well sick this coming week.

Time reading: 2 last night when reading in bed, and 1 this morning
Time posting:
Food: I had a fairly good pot roast with my nephew and sister and today had a runza on the way back from Nebraska.
