A rare and thoughtfully preserved exhibition catalogue from the 2001 Kyoto retrospective "The Smiling Face of Happiness", held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Elliott Erwitt’s photographic career.
This copy is in excellent condition and comes with two precious inclusions: the original exhibition flyer and entrance ticket, offering a tangible piece of the exhibition’s atmosphere and historical context.
Elliott Erwitt is one of the most iconic figures in 20th-century photography—an show more enduring master of candid, humanistic, and often humorous imagery. As a core member of Magnum Photos, Erwitt’s work blends lightness and depth, capturing everything from the absurdity of everyday life to the poignancy of quiet moments, whether between world leaders or small dogs on the street. His photos are at once timeless and deeply personal, balancing elegance with irony.
Exhibition for exhibit in Tokyo. The exhibition, titled The Smiling Face of Happiness (「幸福の横顔」), showcased Erwitt’s most emblematic images—images that, across five decades, reflect his unique way of seeing the world. This catalog compiles many of those photographs, accompanied by essays, a detailed chronology, and selected quotes, forming a cohesive tribute to his vision and voice.

A solid Erwitt retrospective that demonstrates that there is much more to this photographer than just dogs and wit - there is also depth, beauty and emotion. Erwitt is a photographer with a huge scope.
Just amazing. Beautiful, subtle, humorous, joyous... a relaxing book to spend time with.
Beautiful book of photographs of dogs. Nowadays we see most of our dog photographs, by amateurs, online but these are black and white and gorgeous.
