Short biography
Kamala Suraiyya (b. Kamala Madhavikutty) (Malayalam കമലാ സുരയ്യ / മാധവിക്കുട്ടി) (31 March 1934 – 31 May 2009) was a major Indian English poet and literateur and at the same time a leading Malayalam author from Kerala state, South India. Her popularity in Kerala is based chiefly on her short stories and autobiography, while her oeuvre in English, written under the name Kamala Das, is noted for the fiery poems and explicit autobiography.

Her open and honest treatment of female sexuality, free from any sense of guilt, infused her writing with power, but also marked her as an iconoclast in her generation.[1] On 31 May 2009, aged 75, she died at a hospital in Pune,[2] but has earned considerable respect in recent years.

My Story is clearly a memoir written ahead of it's time. Knowing Kamala Das (Madhavikutty) and her tragic life story, of lost love and having to live outside Kerala as she longed for her home, this book felt really heart wrenching to read through.

She craved love - a privilege in an extremely conservative society and community. There's her parents, two people marrying for convenience and creating children out of duty than anything. And then her husband, a bisexual with an extremely show more promiscuous past and is so dismissive of her. Tragedy after tragedy, it really makes one think. I liked the style it was written, raw and unfiltered, flitting from one thought to another. This is rare in a time when almost every memoir is ghostwritten.
I struggled with the translation. It was very clear while reading through dome clunky sentences.

A poignant song of life..thats how i see these poems.. heart wrenching..i could feel her inner turmoil as she tries to break free from the strictures of society and yet wants to be engulfed in its warmth..a life lived seeking love..but never finding.
Once again i am in awe of Ms Das. Her poetry can never be reviewed. Some moments in those poems really had my soul shattered.
