i seriously have no idea what to say about this book. i have no idea how i feel about it. i didn't even know how many stars to give it, so i erred on the side of caution. fucked up and exploitative? interesting comment on revenge and gender? neither? both and more? i already knew the "big twist," since one of my students had to be taught the phrase "spoiler alert" during class one day, unfortunately too late, but that may have been why i read it. i would have liked to have had fresh eyes show more going in, but oh well. i will see the almodovar film, that's for sure, since i feel like i would be less creeped out by his take on some of the more difficult issues here. show less
whoa, the ending was very different than the movie and I think i like it more. less soap opera and more thriller. really liked the structure but saw the reveal coming obviously since I've seen the movie, but even so there was some pretty heavy-handed foreshadowing that annoyed me. I appreciated the attention to detail tho
An erotic thriller. A wealthy and enraged plastic surgeon (Richard) takes his revenge (in a very unique way) out on the man (Vincent) who raped his daughter who in the aftermath of the crime is left mentally unbalanced. The relationship between the doctor and his helpless victim over time becomes one of complete domination and manipulation. In the meantime Vincent's best friend (Alex) who unbeknownst to the above mentioned doctor played an even more pivotal role in the assault on his show more daughter is now hiding out from the law for robbing a bank and in the act-of killing a cop and trying desperately to find a way out of the country. Intelligently plotted and fast paced--it has more than a few deft twists. A somewhat surprising ending. I guess love conquers all. show less
