"The summer-morning death of Silja, that lonely figure left to her own resources, may thus be seen as the end of a long chain of events that we can regard as beginning thirty years earlier, when Silja's father, Kustaa, inherited the Salmelus farm."
So begins this novel, which then takes us back through the events of young Silja's sad life: her father's marriage to a woman of unfortunate family, plus his own weak character cause the loss of the family farm. Further events find the girl working show more as a maidservant on a succession of farms, until while working for a kindly professor, she falls in love. The beautifully written account of Silja's emotions that midsummer is perhaps the loveliest part of this novel.
Towards the end, as war breaks out between the Red and White factions, I felt my interest beginning to wane slightly, but nonetheless a great novel.

Ainoan Nobel-kirjailijamme Frans Emil Sillanpään 1918 kirjoittama romaani Hurskas kurjuus (Santa Miseria) herätti aikakautenaan kovasti ristiriitaisia tunteita. Kirja julkaistiin 1919. Kirjasta eivät senajan Suomessa pitäneet valkoiset, eivätkä show more punaiset. Valkoiset eivät pitäneet, koska heidät kuvattiin raakalaisiksi ja punaiset eivät pitäneet, koska heidät kuvattiin olemukseltaan yksinkertaisiksi. Sillanpää kuvaa mainiosti maaseutua, siellä asuvia ihmisiä, sekä heidän tapaansa elää. show less
I adore this book. I love how Sillanpää describes nature and people.
It's summer and Elias, a young student is back from university and the city for the summer, during which he seduces two girls. This was Sillanpää's first novel and considered rather daring.

The introduction is by Panu Rajala, and the edition contains a selection of contemporary reviews.
