An enduring mystery from our ancient past. 'Conventional wisdom' (which is an oxymoron) tells us that it has been explained away. Perhaps conventional science with its conventional paradigms is right. It was just an angry volcano on a small island that lost its top and entered into legend, thanks to Plato and some annoying ancient Egyptian priests. Sure. Of course that's what happened. But our past keeps getting pushed back further and further. The mystery remains and this book tells us all show more about it. Intriguing. show less
A very good beginners guide to Egyptian mythology, cover th major gods and stories of this rich and amazingly detailed body of mythology. A bit dry and academic in places, however it is compensated by the fascinating material being explained and retold
It's a mix of storytelling and nonfiction (criticism).

The old stories aren’t all goodness and light, but they have a certain dark grandeur to them.
.........................
The stories are diverse, containing much of the good and bad of both traditions.

After Donnelly, Spence was the next great Atlantis scholar. This book is old, but, like Donnelly, all Atlantis stuff is this rehashed with some aliens thrown in.
