This collection of letters can be a bit of slog to read, at times, but keep at it and you will get a surprisingly complete picture of the professional life of a working artist in the late 19th century. In toto, fascinating ... it's just that it does (necessarily! Pissarro was often in quite dire straits, and worked extremely hard to keep his family afloat) involve a lot of ... well, complaining about critics, other artists and especially art dealers. It's a fine antidote to anyone's vague show more romantic notion of what the artist life is like. Invaluable. show less
I can lose myself in these pages - before I know it, an hour is gone. But what an hour!
