Read this as a kid and loved it. It actually really formed my thinking about animals and how we can't attribute human good and evil to non sentient beings
When I read on the book's jacket that the novel had been written by a pastor, I steeled myself to reading religious tripe. However the story moved along quickly with plenty of action despite a plot that had a few holes in it. It did present some interesting moral questions near the end when the hero had to decide whether to leave the villain to face death & torture at the hands of the Apaches or risk his own life to prevent this. The author took an easy way out by having the killer make one show more last foolish attempt at escape and died in a hail of gunfire from the Apaches and the hero so no one lost face or crossed the line in the eyes of God. show less
This is the 2nd book in this 'Horse Dreams' trilogy and I liked it even more than book one. Indiana teacher Develyn, "Dev", has escaped Indiana and is enjoying the charms of a small Wyoming town. It is a place she visited as a child and has always wanted to return to it. There she finds at least 3 cowboys who show an interest in her, but what I liked best about this book was her friendship with Casey Cree-Ryder. These two ladies are as different as night and day, but they are also true show more "kindred spirits". I loved their adventures in this story and just the way they interact with each other. This was truly a delightful read, with very believable characters. Can't wait to start book 3 "Wish I'd Known You Tears Ago"!
For me, this is a series that needs to be read in the order written. They all blend together as one big story. Could you read it as a stand alone? Sure, but then you would miss out on two other well written stories. show less

I liked the characters in this story, as they seemed very real. I enjoyed the story line and look forward to reading the other two books in this series. Develyn Worrell is a 5th grade teacher in Indiana, who decides to take a vacation during her summer break, and heads to a town down a dirt road in Wyoming that she once visited as a child and had wonderful memories of that place. There she will remember her past, enjoy her present and begin to wonder about her future. While there she will show more discover a "quirky" new girlfriend (who I personally got a real kick out of) and three men who are showing a real interest in her. She will also acquire a horse and will spend many hours enjoying the peace that comes from being in the middle of nowhere.
This story is full of adventure and interesting characters. 'Dev' is a woman who has lost a husband through divorce and then death, has a daughter who is angry at how the family was broken apart, and who is wanting to experience something more to her life than just teaching. I enjoyed getting to know her and will see how she continues to grow in the next two books in this series. show less
