About the Author

Arthur Rimbaud, 1854-1891 Arthur Rimbaud was born October 20, 1854. He was the son of an army captain who deserted his family when Arthur was six years old. He attended a provincial school in Charleville, a town in northeastern France, and was a brilliant student until the Franco-Prussian war. It show more was then Rimbaud turned rebel and fled his home. As a boy, Rimbaud wrote some of the most remarkable poetry of the 19th century. His rhythmic experiments in his prose poems "Illuminations" (1886; eng.trans.,1932) identified him as one of the creators of free verse. Synesthesia, (the description of one sense experience in terms of another), was popularized by his "Sonnet of the Vowels" (1871;Eng. Trans., 1966) where each vowel is assigned a color. After Rimbaud fled his home in July 1870, a year of drifting followed. During this time, he had sent some poems to Paul Verlaine. In 1871, he was invited to Paris where Verlaine rejected him as a drunk. In spite of that, he and Verlaine became lovers and the relationship continued sporadically over two years and formed the core of disillusionment in "A Season in Hell." After the affair ended, Rimbaud abandoned his writing. At the time he was not yet 20 years old. Rimbaud transformed himself becoming a trader and gunrunner in Africa. On November 10, 1891, he died in Marseille following the amputation of his cancerous right leg. Arthur Rimbaud combined precocious mastery of many forms of French poetry with disdain for its other practitioners. After scandalous times in Paris, London, and Brussels, he retreated home to the Ardennes and in solitude became the godfather of surrealism with the prose poems contained in this volume.
All of this before he turned twenty-one.
These poems count as difficult, yet what struck me is how concrete the language is. There are few abstract terms. The difficulty of the poems lies in the show more surprising juxtaposition of the words (“magie bourgeois,” for instance, is a term that never would have occurred to me). When you read this collection, you enter a world in which snow burns and lava chills. Is this arbitrary? Or perhaps it is part of his self-study course in rational derangement of all the senses.
A key term pops up repeatedly: “féerique” (fairy-like). This seems to be another hint to Rimbaud's project, one to which he alone had the key, as he writes at the end of “Parade”: "J'ai seul la clef de cette parade sauvage." This line seems for some readers to apply to all the poems in this collection, and they question whether one should even bother to enter such a hermetically sealed body of work, where meaning tantalizingly eludes understanding. Perhaps the passage of time and the influence these poems have exercised from André Breton to Bob Dylan and Patti Smith have made it easier for us to sit back and allow ourselves to be enchanted.
When the poet writes: “J’ai tendu des cordes de clocher à clocher; des guirlandes de fenêtre à fenêtre; des chaînes d’or d’étoile à étoile, et je danse,” this expresses for me the power of imagination to create worlds similar to the one in which we live, but in which our quotidian constraints no longer bind us. There are few explicit references to the cities he visited. Instead, some poems feature generalized, anonymous urban landscapes, while others offer a rich catalog of place names, modern and ancient, supplemented by astral bodies and sea floors.
All the poems are written in the first person, but the “je” who speaks is not necessarily autobiographical, but a constructed persona. On the other hand, scattered references to “Elle,” an insatiable vampire who reinforced his self-accusations of indolence, suggests Rimbaud’s mother.
To further enrich the vocabulary, Rimbaud includes a smattering of English and German words (“bottom,” “wasserfall”). At times, some of the unusual combinations of French words seem as if they may have been suggested by homonyms in other languages. Even the title, Illuminations, should be pronounced as in English, according to Verlaine.
One can quibble with the translations. Once or twice, Mme. Varèse simply leaves out a phrase, and at times, she seems to miss a nuance in the original. For instance, when Rimbaud writes in "Vies," "j'ai eu une scène où jouer les chefs-d'œuvre dramatiques de toutes les littératures," Mme. Varèse translates "I once had a stage on which to play all the masterpieces of literature," this is adequate, but to me misses the sense of the plural "littératures," which suggests bodies of work from different languages: not only Racine, but also Shakespeare and Goethe. I have not compared her renditions to other translations but found them serviceable as cribs so that I didn’t have to run repeatedly to the dictionary.

There was obviously a time when Rimbaud was an aspiration, an impoverished goal, one brocaded with the lice with which one can toss upon the clergy. Allah, of course, had other plans. I did read a number of fawning books and I maintained the posture for a while. That is a but a memory. Steeped--perhaps--in patchouli and cigar smoke.

It was thus strange to return to the poet after a few decades. I was show more encouraged earlier in the week by Edmund Wilson’s dichotomy of the character of Axel and the peripatetic life of Rimbaud. It does give me pause that a teenager wrote these incandescent prose poems. Some border on shrill. Most are transportive and wrought in excess. There appears to be an affinity with Paris Spleen and I am curious to return to Starkie's biography to see Arthur's position on Baudelaire. show less
Comment lire Rimbaud aujourd'hui ?

Collégien trop précoce; adolescent trop pervers; poète trop différent; mystique trop incroyant ou incroyant trop mystique; aventurier trop cupide. Tout est démesure chez Rimbaud; rien n'y est indifférent. Le lecteur ne peut que s'y plonger tout entier. Son oeuvre est courte: elle peut, elle doit être lue d'un trait.
On trouvera donc ici, comme il se doit, les Poésies, Une saison en Enfer, les Illuminations. Mais il a semblé intéressant de faire le show more point, en citant de larges - et parfois peu connus - extraits de la correspondance de Rimbaud, sur les mythes que le poète a engendrés, sur le couple infernal qu'il forma - un temps - avec Verlaine; sur les dernières années enfin. Perdu - aux confins de l'Ethiopie - dans un rêve où l'attrait de l'or l'emportait sur celui de l'aventure, "l'homme aux semelles de vent", comme l'avait nommé Verlaine, avait déjà brûlé l'étape poétique d'une vie aussi brève que marginale.

Si l'on devait citer le poète qui a exercé l'influence la plus profonde sur la poésie du début du XXe siècle, il faudrait nommer Rimbaud. Avec plus de hardiesse encore que Baudelaire, il a étendu le champ d'exploration de la poésie. Avant lui, l'expérience poétique était principalement l'expérience de la création littéraire. Après lui, la poésie devient un moyen de connaissance. [...] C'est qu'il n'a pas hésité à se mettre en communication avec la part inconnaissable de lui-même. Il y a découvert un grand jeu d'images, fleurs éclatées, filles à lèvres d'orange, déluges et miracles, un jeu dont chaque figure ressemble à un message marqué d'un sceau incompréhensible et sacré. Dès lors, Rimbaud va libérer tous les phénomènes de l'inconscient, préparer les voies du surréalisme et créer, si l'on veut, un nouveau mystère dont les symboles resteront étrangers au merveilleux et au fantastique.

« Je veux être poète et je travaille à me rendre voyant. Il s'agit d'arriver à l'inconnu par le dérè-glement de tous les sens. C'est faux de dire « je pense. » On devrait dire « On me pense. » je est un autre. »
A dix-sept ans, Rimbaud s'est déjà défini. Il veut vaincre les apparences, briser les carcans de sa ville natale, Charleville. D'emblée, ce fut un chasseur foudroyant d'images et de mots, une nature colérique qui chante la fureur et la vengeance sur le monde ignoble ou sur soi-même. Qu'il soit voyou génial, mystique à l'état sauvage ou négociant à la fin de sa vie, Rimbaud a toujours rêvé de « voir ce que l'homme a cru voir », l'enfer de la réalité ou la beauté de l'éden. Avide d'inconnu, le mot n'est plus pour lui expression mais signe. Et par la force de ses signes, « l'homme aux semelles de vent » nous fait palper le monde dans. toute sa laideur et toute sa beauté.

Ivre de sensations, Rimbaud est comme ce bateau qui connaît l'éblouissement de " nuits sans fond " mais aussi la désillusion " d'aubes navrantes ". Voyant, il crée un monde où la Grande Ourse est une auberge, où les poteaux télégraphiques sont une lyre aux chants de fer...
