A scathing review of the Somalia affair from the left as a critique of imperialism, colonialism and racism in the guise of peacekeeping. That said a fairly accurate portrayal of how public opinion turned against the Regiment and in favour of the decision to disband it. The author points out that Botswana troops with a less aggressive and more polite, socially integrated approach, met their mission and delivered escorted twice as many aid convoys than the more numerous, more heavily armed US show more Marines in the same theatre. She examines the subtle ways our perception of mission are coloured by perceptions of good and evil, as referenced in the title. The author also points out that when we do wrong we often blame the UN (them) not our own. An interesting work, from one perspective but not definitive on the topic. The author is a feminist professor from OISE a sociology hotbed on new thinking in Ontario. Those asked to comment on Somalia should be aware of this book and its perspective. show less
