Hubert Lampo (1920–2006)
Author of The Coming of Joachim Stiller
About the Author
Lampo is the major Dutch--Flemish literary exponent of magical realism, which is based on the belief in the collective unconscious, a theory developed by the Swiss psychologist C. G. Jung. Jung's theory identifies the presence of archetypes, "the original pattern or model of all things of the same show more type." The main characters in Lampo's novels cross borders of time and space which normally separate generations and worlds. His characters are often librarians, archaeologists, or others who are "lost" or out of touch with the here and now, which makes their passing into a different zone plausible. Quite common in Lampo's novels are variants of the so-called anima or perfect woman, the savior archetype, the witch, the devil, and the Orpheus figure. The latter is, in fact, the main character in Kasper in de onderwereld (Kasper in the Underworld) (1969), a variation on the Orpheus and Euridice theme in which the harbor area of Rotterdam replaces the "classic" underworld, and Kasper plays a mouth organ instead of a flute. Lampo himself regards this novel as his most successful execution of magical realism. His best-known book is The Coming of Joachim Stiller (1974), in which we meet the classical savior type who disappears from the morgue where his body had lain for three days.
