An LT friend has three VMCs that can be sent anywhere in the US:
* A green Virago Modern Classic edition of The Mother's Recompense by Edith Wharton - claimed
* A black Dial Press edition of Three Sisters by May Sinclair - claimed
* A black Dial Press edition of The Semi-Attached Couple and the Semi-Detached House (no longer available)

Any takers?

Now back from visiting Middle Child in Leicester (post to follow about my finds) but I have ended up with a duplicate green (later green) of The Sugar House by Antonia White which is up for grabs. I would *prefer* to send inland owing to the postage issue :((( but could probably send overseas by surface if someone really wanted it!

#8 - According to her biographer - also her nephew - Stella Gibbons wasn't parodying Mary Webb and Sheila Kaye-Smith as much as the many imitators who sent in their work after they were serialised by the magazine she worked for. The rural novelists weren't to her taste but in later life she did express concern the she might have caused them distress.

Mary Webb isn't for everyone, and I accept that much of her work is flawed and dated, but I do like her.

12LyzzyBee
Aug 17, 2013, 2:47 am

Oh no - I love both Cold Comfort Farm and Mary Webb and manage to do so simultaneously. Webb has a touch of the Hardy, Lawrence and Francis Brett Young about her but with a distinctly feminine slant, and is very readable.

Have a VMC up for grabs:

The Lost Traveller, Antonia White--one of the black editions in decent condition but with a few unobtrusive creases on the cover

I have a non-Virago edition of Rebecca West's This Real Night if anyone is interested. (State-side, please)
This particular edition is a hard bound Viking publication and an ex-library book but a very good reading copy. This is West's book two of her Cousin Rosamund trilogy right between The Fountain Overflows and Cousin Rosamund.

My husband just returned from a trip to the UK, where he was helping my daughter settle in for her study abroad program in Exeter. Despite providing him a 3-page list of my Virago collection, he returned with 3 that I already own. The silver lining is that they are original green Virago editions, and my copies are Penguin and Dial editions. So I now have three duplicates to offer:

The Return of the Soldier, by Rebecca West - Dial Press (Black) edition
Crossriggs, by Jane & Mary Findlater - Penguin (Green) edition - @ccookie
Family History, by Vita Sackville-West - Penguin (Green) edition - @Heaven-Ali

Laura,

I don't have Crossriggs and would love to add it to my collection. I have only recently started amassing these wonderful tomes and am now up to 45. I guess that is not bad since I only started earlier this year. Spending waaaay too much money!!

ALso, at a sale this weekend I picked up a second copy of A View of the Harbour by Elizabeth Taylor so that I could offer it to someone. It is A Virago Book by Virago Little Brown and Co. UK so it has the modern cover. This was the book that started me on my collection and I received it from my Virago Secret Santa last year. Let me know if you would like it.

Be warned though, it is definitely 'used'. It came to me this way.

It has a crease that starts about 2/3 of the way from the spine on the top down to about 1/5 of the way from the bottom right corner ...

And
... sadly it is filled with yellow highlight marks.

The good news is it is a green published in 1987.

Let me know if you would like it.

>47 Heaven-Ali::
Ali, checking in the U.S., the only Thirkells I see in the Virago Modern Classics are Trooper to the Southern Cross & Christmas at High Rising, the former being available only used from vendors & the latter available only for the Kindle which I thought was a hoot because who collects VMCs on Kindle? I mean I do have some titles on my Kindle but they cannot look pretty on my shelves.

Most of my Thirkells are used books & are in the Moyer Bell edition with a few old hardcovers & mass markets thrown in. I do have High Rising and Wild Strawberries in the V.M.C. But don't think I will duplicate the others just to have them in a Virago edition. That darned budget only stretches so far. ;-)

50LizzieD

Laura, the book is yours, and I'm excited to send it!
I had no idea that there was a Christmas at High Rising. Wow! Off to check it out for the Kindle........... Belva, like you,my Thirkells are not VMCs - except Trooper to the Southern Cross which a wonderful Secret Santa sent me, and I won't try to duplicate them for the same reason.

My wonderful mother-in-law has been book-shopping again and has found two lovely original green Viragos; one is a duplicate Anderby Wold. Although it's in quite good condition the pages, especially the edges, have yellowed with age. If that doesn't put you off I'm happy to send it anywhere, although outside Europe it will have to go surface, which can take up to six weeks.

So, when I wasn't paying attention, I managed to obtain a duplicate copy of The Dud Avocado (modern cover) from ReadItSwapIt (I really must check lists before requesting books). Happy to pass it on, but will have to restrict to Europe this time, I'm afraid.

53LyzzyBee
Oct 26, 2013, 3:34 am

All read and enjoyed but I don't need to keep them ... will send anywhere but will be surface mail outside the UK I'm afraid.

Vita Sackville-West - Heritage (touchstone won't work but you know the one) - modern Bello Books edition, unmarked, except for my name and the date and where it came from in ink, neatly, inside front cover.

Janet McLoughlin - Up and Running: Women in Business - a Virago Business and Management / Women's Studies book from the early 90s, still has its interest. Dark green with photographic cover. Some chipping on spine. My details inside front cover.

Mary Webb - Armour Wherein he Trusted - original green, some chipping and wear on spine, no white lines on spine. Kindly sent to me by Dee and a note inside reflects such - I did very much enjoy it but I try to pass on books I'm not going to re-read (and I hope Dee doesn't mind!)

Lis Whitelaw - The Life and Rebellious Times of Cicely Hamilton - Women's Press edition, some creasing on spine but not visible, can just be felt. Typical mid-90s WP biograhy. She wrote William an Englishman

Let me know who would like what!

I know I haven't yet sent out my previous offers (and did anyone want Up and Running by the way? but I have another non-Virago but of interest I'm sure ...

It's Edith Sitwells English Eccentrics in a lovely Folio Press edition. It's a lovely hard cover (so only able to post in the UK, sorry!) and there's a photo of the cover here http://librofulltime.wordpress.com/2013/11/01/state-of-the-tbr-november-2013/ (next to Tess). It has some pencil markings inside with prices. The pale blue box is a bit grubby and has pencil markings, but has kept it clean so I'll send that on too.

I have read most of it - it DOES have some fairly gruesome bits about cannibals in it and I found it quite hard to read generally. I try not to keep books as objects. So if someone wants it (that includes Heaven-Ali of course, I just didn't want to force it on you if you didn't really want it!) please shout!

And I'll post the others out soon, I promise!

Bit of a dilemma for me, as it's the same day as the London meet up. Still quite tempted though - I'm a bit surprised by the length of the journey but at the moment I could buy a return ticket for a total of £12. That's going through the National Rail site, and it's London Marylebone, Chiltern Railways. The fares are really variable so it's probably worth booking quite soon, I might just gamble on planning to come and buy the £12 tickets - £6 each way - as otherwise it's £50-£96. Best trains look like 9 am arriving at 11.15 and the 17.37 back (otherwise it's the 15.37).

Not a duplicate, not even a Virago BUT for any of you who are taking part in the Great War Theme Read:
I have an ARC/ER copy of Wake by Anna Hope. It is London 1920, about 3 women whose lives are intertwined without them even knowing it, the second anniversary of the Armistice of the Great War and the 'Unknown Warrior' . If anyone would like to have it I shall be happy to send it stateside only please. This one fits into the 'after' part of our Great War theme read.
Anyway if anyone would like it please let me know by early Tuesday or it will be gone. Thanks.

Although I got a lot of Viragos for Christmas many of them were duplicates so they are available to the rest of the group. The usual conditions - I'll send anywhere but surface mail outside Europe.

Original Greens
The Orchid House (TV tie-in picture)
Anderby Wold
A Pin to See the Peepshow

2nd Style Greens
The Enchanted April (TV tie-in picture)
The Diviners

Latest Coloured Style
The Magic Toyshop
Our Spoons Came From Woolworths
Invitation to the Waltz
The Return of the Soldier - part of the World War One reading year.

I shall be coming to the London meet-up on 23rd March so if anyone who will see me there wants one (or more) I can bring them then.

The Quest for Christa T - Christa Wolf - later green
A Touch of Mistletoe - Barbara Comyns - an original green but a bit battered and with a line down the spine (I owe this to Simon's encouragement to buy books in Henry Pordes - he's a bad influence and I forgot I already had this but upgraded my copy!)

Thank you Karen/Kaggsy for my VMC copy of The Diviners which arrived this morning, lovely condition too. I think I now have 3 copies of the book (but only one Virago), the others are a lovely University of Chicago edition, afterword by Margaret Atwood and a tatty New Canadian library copy which also has an introduction. I now have 4 out of 5 Manawaka books in VMC (don't think they published the 5th) and 4 out of 5 in Canadian editions (not A Jest of God).

Time for a reread of the whole series, I think. I first read them at 19, and I've reread two more recently but The Stone Angel was probably still 10 years ago.

The Towers of Trebizond - modern Flamingo, an ex library but in pretty good nick
West with the Night - green spin, but reprint with pictorial front cover

Shy, our group has a wish list located here:

You might put your desired Virago on that list. It really comes in handy especially during our Virago Secret Santa time.
Happy hunting. :-)

Karen, my book arrived 2 days ago & I was so shocked. Like Grant, I was prepared to wait a few months for it. Thank you so very much.

' "Take my camel, dear," said my Aunt Dot, as she climbed down from this animal on her return to High Mass.' Thus starts, with one of the most famous opening lines in modern English literature, Rose Macaulay's classic novel, The Towers of Trebizond"

~from the back of the book

I must say that I am quite intrigued and will probably read this one during this month.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! And for the note as well. I love the artwork at the top. (((♥)))

I also loved it Genny but in my case it was as much because I am fascinated by Turkey. Trebizond I had never heard of and when I investigated it on line found this

I have

Tillie Olsen's Tell me a Riddle & Yonnondio in a second-generation green, spine is very sun lightened to a blue colour, one crease, edges of cover slightly chipped, my name and a date inside front cover.

Attia Hosain SUnlight on a Broken Column original green, some chipping to edge of spine and covers, no creasing to spine, my name and date and place of purchase inside front cover, pencil pricing on first page.

Surface mail overseas from the UK - anyone want?

I have a spare copy of The Curate's Wife. It's an original green but with the Penguin on the top right of the front cover, which means it's an American edition, I think. Women in the Wall by Julie O'Faolain

238kaggsy
Edited: Aug 13, 2014, 2:25 pm

Anyone who reads my blog will have noticed that I'm having a bit of a clear out at the moment, as space (and weight!) is causing concern. At the weekend I tackled the Viragos and discovered I had a considerable number of dupes, many where I'd replaced new cover copies with original greens. I've also been a bit ruthless and tried to ask myself honestly if I'm likely to read certain books. So I have for offer the following and again would prefer to keep them inland but will consider overseas if anyone is desperate! If no-one wants them, the charity shops locally will love me!! :)

MODERN COVERS

Union Street - Pat Barker
Liza's England - Pat Barker
The Well of Loneliness - Radclyffe Hall
Our Spoons Came from Woolworths - Barbara Comyns (x 2 - one with dog and one with most recent cover)
Elizabeth and her German Garden - Elizabeth von Arnim
The Edwardians - Vita Sackville West
Frost in May - Antonia White
The Land of Green Giner - Winifred Holtby
Precious Bane - Mary Webb
Kingfishers Catch Fire - Rumer Godden
Breakfast with the Nikolides - Rumer Godden
Black Narcissus - Rumer Godden
Good Behaviour - Molly Keane
Rebecca - Daphne du Maurier

GREENS

Blow Your House Down - Pat Barker
Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont - Elilzabeth Taylor ((black cover Dial Virago version)

MISC

The Birth of Venus - Sarah Dunant
The Collected Stories - Grace Paley

I have over 100 credits, have only used a handful in the past year, and do NOT intend to pay for this service. (I will get more out of donating books to the library's annual sale and claiming a tax deduction.) So--if any of you stateside see any books at PBS that you want, let me know ASAP, and I'll have them sent to you.

Edited: Feb 2, 2015, 2:04 pm

I will take you up on that offer, Deborah. I would love books 12, 13 and 14 of Margaret Maron's Deborah Knott series. (Winter's Child, Hard Row, and Death's Half Acre. They all seem to be available on PBS. I think there's going to be quite a backlash about this change, at least among the LT crowd!

I don't have any credits to share, but if anyone wants any of the books I have listed on PBS, let me know, and I'll get them sent off to you. I'm laytonwoman3rd there as well. I'll be removing my books from the site before the 15th.

Likewise, though I'll only send in the USA, if anyone wants anything from my PBS shelf, message me the titles and your address on librarything. I wanna get rid of them, anything leftover will go to my annual summer yard sale--maybe make some bucks to get some highly anticipated kindle books..

>289 laytonwoman3rd: Just send me your address and I'll have them shipped directly to you. Happy to help--I'd much rather give the $300 I spent on postage to friends than to the greedy, grubbing PBS. What do they need that money for anyway? They already sell books and credits and other stuff, and since the computer program does all the work, and volunteers answer questions, they can't have more than 4 or 5 paid employees.

Belva, five of these books are on the way. I could not find copies of Small Avalanches or Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? Since PBS sent the emails, people have been either buying up books to use their credits or taking down their bookshelves. I don't blame them--this is a real ripoff. This morning I cancelled an order because I frankly did not want to invest another $3 in shipping for a credit that I would have to pay another 49 cents to use.

298rainpebble
Edited: Feb 2, 2015, 6:50 pm

Understandable, Deborah.
Thank you for ordering the 5. I am tickled that you were able to get Wild Nights!: Stories About the Last Days of Poe, Dickinson, Twain, James, and Hemingway (P.S.). Now to just hope that the owners of the bookshelves will accept the requests.

Interesting backlash and scheming! I decided to use some credits today too, but don't see myself using all of the credits I have left. I'm trying to decide whether to bail completely or leave my wish list up and pay the fee for the occasional VMC that pops up.

I have 2 VMC to offer.
The first is Antonia White's Beyond the Glass. It does have a sticker on the front reading "NOW A MAJOR BBC TV Production". You will find it a bit rough around the edges but a perfectly good reading copy.
The 2nd is Edith Wharton's Ethan Frome with the movie tie-in photo on the front.

Please let me know if you would like one or both.

>302 lauralkeet: Laura, I don't know that I'd call it scheming--people paid to send out books and they just want the swaps they're entitled to, without paying again. A LOT of people are either bailing entirely or just keeping a few points and a free wish list. That's what I'll be doing, and it will have to be a book I REALLY want before I'll pay another 49 cents.

Deb - I am not sure if my last message got to you but the books I asked you about are still showing on PBS. I really don't know what to do myself about PBS because I got a lot of kids' books off there last year. 95 actually. Do we have to pay that 49c before the middle of Feb?

>307 romain: Sent you a PM. The editions are listed, but the books are not available for ordering.

>308 laytonwoman3rd: It's already happening. Mass exodus over there. I'm planning to use the bulk of my remaining credits on books to donate to the local library's sale, so I can get a tax deduction. I'll leave a few there in case anything hard to find that I really want ever comes up. From now on it will be my boxes and stacks of TBRs, the library, and using Amazon gift cards earned from MyPoints. The remaining credits I have at PBS and those I have at BookMooch represent over $1000 in postage paid to send other people my books. I can't afford to keep doing that once I retire.

I also paid the $18, Peg. And a 50c admin surcharge which made me angry. What was the $18 for?! But I do use the site regularly for non-VMC stuff. I did read some of the comments on the site and it seems that some people use it as a discussion forum and never trade at all. One person implied that some bookshelves consist entirely of un-owned books - just random ISBNs they have no intention of trading.

Hello peeps!

I have some Viragos to offer here as follows:

Kate O'Brien:

The Land of Spices (modern cover)
Without My Cloak (modern cover)
The Ante-Room (original green)

Agnes Smedley - Daughter of Earth (later green)

Enid Bagnold - The Squire (original green)

Maureen Duffy - The Microcosm (later green)

Molly Keane:

Devoted Ladies (original green, a bit battered)
Loving and Giving (modern cover)
Full House (original green)
The Rising Tide (original green)
Time after Time (modern cover)

Much as I would love to send them abroad, I will have to restrict to the UK for the time being as the costs for even surface mail abroad are very high. Let me know if you would like any of these!

I've gathered together all my Virago duplicates in one place and I'm rather embarrassed to admit that I have seventeen volumes, but only fourteen titles. I will list them all now but if there is a rush I will have to timetable the sending over a few weeks or so. Like Karen, having looked at the new postage rates, I will give preference to those in the UK or Europe at the moment. **Open to the whole world now!**

Original Greens:
Lady Oracle (has had water damage but is now almost completely flat again)
The Passion of the New Eve (creasing to front cover)
A Stricken Field (has Penguin on the front cover and some sticker removal damage)
South Riding (looks unread)
A Game of Hide and Seek
Precious Bane (rathered battered front cover)
The Judge (two copies! one printed 1980 the other 1987; the older one is in better condition)
The Sugar House

Second Style Greens:
The Weather in the Streets (two copies)
Blaming

Modern Coloured:
Provincial Daughter (mint)
The Constant Nymph (mint)
In a Summer Season (two copies)
The Fountain Overflows (mint)
The Enchanted April (mint)
Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont film tie-in cover (mint)

Occasion for Loving Nadine Gordimer

The Enchanted April Elizabeth von Arnim

William E H Young

Maurice Guest Henry Handel Richardson

Peking Picnic Ann Bridge

They are not in pristine condition - a few bent corners, fraying covers, stains but they are not too hideous.

PM me if they appeal.

Hope you are all well and happy.

Anyone like a green edition of Beyond the Glass by Antonia White? I have a second copy. If US will have to send by surface mail.

>377 CDVicarage: I've added to my duplicates list above. Please claim some! I want to give them away to good homes. I'm happy to send overseas by surface mail, although not all at once. Please consider choosing two titles at a time as it is as cheap to send two books as one with the current cost bands.

Don't be diffident about claiming some: I have had many books from others on this list, in the UK and overseas, and I want to contribute to other bookshelves.

>386 Soupdragon: Certainly, Dee, let me know your address. Is there another title you'd like as it will not add to the postage?

Thank you, Kerry! I'll PM you my address. Thank you also for your offer of a second book but (I'm slightly embarrassed to admit) I have all the others 😳

I upgraded my copy of The Ha-Ha by Jennifer Dawson today so if anyone in the UK wants a bumped and slightly bent one, let me know! :) (no longer available)

I have these duplicates to offer. I'll offer to post worldwide as I only have a few and it's been a while since I've had any to send. All original Virago green editions though the Stevie Smith isn't a VMC.

The Seventh Horse and Other Tales - Leonora Carrington - rather worn condition but couldn't leave this on the shelf knowing it was a hard-to-find VMC!

Harriet Hume - Rebecca West

Me Again: Uncollected Writings - Stevie Smith

Oooh, could I please have the Carrington, Dee? I've been after this for a while! :)

>391 kaggsy: I'd be delighted to send the Carrington to you, Karen. It's one I'd more or less given up on finding and then I found two in the space of a few months! I've just checked and I still have an address for you from 2012. Are you still there?

>392 Soupdragon: Thanks Dee, and yes I'm still at the same address! Much appreciated!

I now have a duplicate copy of A Favourite of the Gods by Sybille Bedford thanks to not taking my list into town with me today... It's a little bit bumped but up for grabs in the UK!

Nope! Thanks so much. I'm in the process of purging my shelves and trying to read through the books I own, so I'll post the Viragos I don't want here instead of posting them on BookMooch. I'm pretty sure I have ones that you all might be interested in..
