Time to think about the list books you'd like to have as a group read for September and October. Please nominate up to two books and second as many books as you like. I'll close nominations in around a week.

Martin has made me think of Flaubert, so if it hasn't already been done, I nominate A Sentimental Education. And The Dispossessed.

I second both A Sentimental Education and The Dispossessed, and nominate White Noise by Don DeLillo.

After the attack on Salman Rushdie today I thought perhaps we should read something by him as a group. There are so many of his books on the list! I have read and liked Midnight's Children, and read and disliked Fury. I'd be happy to read Grimus or The Satanic Verses -- maybe I will officially nominate the latter because of the attack, although I suspect that many in this group have already read it.

I have never read any Salman Rushdie. I’ll second Satanic Verses.

I will also nominate Old Masters by Thomas Bernhard

We have three books seconded so a poll is needed. Please vote on the link below, and please vote only once:

The results are here and I will close the poll in a week:

The Satanic Verses was (perhaps unsurprisingly) the clear favourite and will be our group read for September. The other books had one vote each - I'll use my organizer's discretionary vote to make The Dispossessed our read for October.

Hmm, I have looked at The Satanic Verses for years and have avoided it for some reason. Interested to see what it is like.

>8 JayneCM: I read it a few years ago and found it a bit of hard work. However it is one of those books you've heard a lot about and therefore should read in your lifetime to see what the fuss is all about.
