I just joined LT, but I've been purposely working on 1001 since my husband gave me the book when it came out. I'll document my progress here.

I was somewhat dismayed by the removal of about 60 books I've already read from the original list, but I'm going to keep them in my list, and mark them with an asterisk. I do agree that many of the books removed were not worthy of inclusion, but also can't understand why others were removed (The Brothers Karamazov for example.

My first entries will be books I've already read, which I haven't yet counted. To the extent I can remember, I'll also note when I read each book.

Here goes:

1. Robinson Crusoe, Daniel Defoe, 1970's

358. Swann's Way by Marcel Proust

On to Within a Budding Grove, which I should finish in late January. I plan to read more 1001 books in 2010. I will be rereading two in January--Cry the Beloved Country for my RL book club, and Light in August (I think that's on the list) for an LT Faulkner group read.

I see that I had never included Cry the Beloved Country so I'm adding it below even though it's a reread. Also, Light in August is not on the list.

1001 books read in 2010:

362. Santa Evita by Tomas Eloy Martinez 4/10

It's not clear how much of this book is fact and how much is fiction. It is, however, an engrossing recreation of the life and death of the mythical Eva Peron. In particular, it focuses on the sixteen years following her death during which her perfectly preserved body was missing.

I was just feeling really intimidated by your numbers for a sec then (I'm aiming for 200 by the end of the year). Then I re-read your first post which has when you read them - made me feel a bit better : )

Can I ask why you disliked Cry, the beloved Country so much?

Actually I loved Cry the Beloved Country. I gave it 5 stars in my review on my 75 book challenge thread. The 1/10 is the date I read it (Janauary, 2010). Sorry for the confusion. I didn't mean to lead anyone astray. :)

I've been following your thread, and you are racing through the list! I've read far fewer than 200 since the list came out, but I have the advantage of age. lol.

Ah but at some point I'm going to run out of short ones...

One of the best, if not the best, books I've read this year. 5 Stars.

374 Felicia's Journey by William Trevor 2000's
375. Black Water by Joyce Carol Oates 2009

377. The Cement Garden by Ian McEwan 1990's
378. The Twilight Years by Sawako Ariyoshi 1990's
379. The Magus by John Fowles 1980's
380. Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhyss 1980's
381. The Drowned World by J.G. Ballard 1980's
382. Timbuktu by Paul Auster 2009
383. Man's Fate by Andre Malraux 1960's

385. Summer by Edith Wharton 1970's Reread 2015
386. The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allen Poe 1960's.

Hope to read more 1001's in 2011 than I did in 2010.

I was pleased to see I've read 29 of the above 36. I also agree with most of the removals, even though they include some books I love very much.

398. The Safety Net by Heinrich Boll 2011
399. The Garden Where the Brass Band Played by Simon Vestdijk 2011
400. Pilcrow by Adam Mars-Jones 2011
401. This Way For the Gas Ladies and Gentlemen by Tadeusz Borowski 2011
402. The Twins by Tessa de Loo 2011
403. Camel Xiangzi by Lao She 2011
404. The Commandant by Jessica Anderson 2011
405. Max Havelaar by Multatuli 2011
406. The Bone People by Keri Hulme 2011

409. The Life and Death of Harriet Frean by May Sinclair 2011
410. The Enormous Room by e.e. cummings 2011

I'm going to try to reach at least 430 this year, but since I'm planning to do a lot of rereading this year (of books on the list that I read years ago) I don't know if I'll make it. :)

Haven't been very diligent about reading from the 1001 list for the past year (or two). Here's what I've read :

423 . The Secret Battle by A.P. Patrick (1890)
424. Cloudsplitter by Russell Banks
425. Inferno by Henri Barbusse
426. Pierre and Jean by Guy de Maupassant
427. The Manors of Ulloa by Emilia Pardo Bazan
428. Alberta and Jacob by Cora Sandel
429. They Shoot Horses Dont't They? by Horace McCoy
430. What a Carve Up by Jonathan Coe
431. Fury by Salman Rushdie
432. American Rust by Philipp meyer

Wonder if I could read 25 this year?

Only a few more 1001 books read in 2016:

437. Blaming by Elizabeth Taylor
438. The Guide by R.K. Narayan
439. Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin
440. Phineas Finn by Anthony Trollope

Will try to be mindful of 1001 when making my reading choices in 2017--I have dozens of 1001 books on my shelves!

I was kind of lax in working in list books at the beginning of the year and as a result had a bit of a mad rush to get some done by the end of the year. Here's to both of us making room for list books in our reading in 2017!
