A collection of 14 sf short stories, published in 1965; all of them are by men, and most are from the early sixties, but the two standout pieces, "The Marching Morons" by Cyril Kornbluth and "Barrier" by Anthony Boucher, are both a bit older (1951 and 1942 respectively). It may just be the editors' taste, but an awful lot of these seemed to be set in future dystopias with a strong distrust and dislike of the common herd. The collection is prefaced by an interview with C.S. Lewis conducted by Kingsley Amis and Brian Aldiss.

Kingsley Amis is generally considered one of the "angry young men" of the 1950s. He was born in London in 1922 and educated at the City of London School. He received a degree in English language and literature from St. John's College, Oxford, in 1947. Until 1961 Amis lectured in English at University College, Swansea, and for the following two show more years at Cambridge. In 1947 Amis published his first collection of poems, Bright November. Frame of Mind followed in 1953 and Poems: Fantasy Portraits in 1954. His first novel, Lucky Jim (1954), established his reputation as a writer. He followed with That Uncertain Feeling (1956), and I Like It Here (1958). A longtime James Bond devotee, Amis wrote a James Bond adventure after the death of Ian Fleming in 1964. Amis's study of the famous spy was titled The James Bond Dossier (1965). Amis received the Booker Prize for the Old Devils (1986). Amis's later works include Memoirs (1990), and The King's English, a collection of essays on the craft of writing well. Amis was knighted in 1990. He died in 1995. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
Robert Conquest is the acclaimed author of many works of history, including "The Great Terror" & "The Harvest of Sorrow", both modern classics. He was educated at Winchester College in England, the University of Grenoble in show more France, and Magdalen College, Oxford University. During World War II, he joined the Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. After studying Bulgarian, he served as an intelligence officer in Bulgaria, where he remained after the war as the press officer at the British Embassy in Sofia. He started out as a poet. He edited volumes of the poetry anthology New Lines, which showcased work by Movement poets. His poetry collections included Between Mars and Venus and Arias from a Love Opera. He also edited Spectrum, a series of five anthologies that presented quality science-fiction stories from the 1940s and 1950s. His science-fiction works included A World of Difference and The Egyptologists written with Kingsley Amis. He is best known as a historian who documented the horrors perpetrated by the Soviet regime against its own citizens. He wrote numerous books on the Soviet system and politics including Power and Politics in the USSR, The Great Terror: Stalin's Purge of the Thirties, The Harvest of Sorrow: Soviet Collectivization and the Terror-Famine, Russia After Khrushchev, Industrial Workers in the USSR, The Nation Killers: The Soviet Deportation of Nationalities, and Kolyma: The Arctic Death Camps.
