About the Author

Born on May 20, 1799, Honore de Balzac is considered one of the greatest French writers of all time. Balzac studied in Paris and worked as a law clerk while pursuing an unsuccessful career as an author. He soon accumulated enormous debts that haunted him most of his life. A prolific writer, Balzac show more would often write for 14 to-16 hours at a time. His writing is marked by realistic portrayals of ordinary, but exaggerated characters and intricate detail. In 1834, Balzac began organizing his works into a collection called The Human Comedy, an attempt to group his novels to present a complete social history of France. Characters in this project reappeared throughout various volumes, which ultimately consisted of approximately 90 works. Some of his works include Cesar Birotteau, Le Cousin Pons, Seraphita, and Le Cousine Bette. Balzac wed his lifelong love, Eveline Hanska in March 1850 although he was gravely ill at the time. Balzac died in August of that year. (Bowker Author Biography) show less

Rating: 4* of five for the Raffel translation

The Publisher Says: Père Goriot is the tragic story of a father whose obsessive love for his two daughters leads to his financial and personal ruin. Interwoven with this theme is that of the impoverished young aristocrat, Rastignac, come to Paris from the provinces to make his fortune, who befriends Goriot and becomes involved with the daughters. The story is set against the background of a whole society driven by social ambition and lust for show more money.

My Review: Père Goriot as translated by Marian Ayton Crawford simply has to be the most tedious translation of Balzac ever done. The translation is the thing here. A perfectly pleasurable read in French, it is just criminal to market this translation at this point in history. Penguin should hang its corporate head in shame for continuing to offer this terrible clanking juddering 1980 Ford Fiesta of a misrepresentation of Père Goriot.

The Raffel translation from Norton Critical Editions is head and shoulders above the older translation. It's much more what I hear in my punkin haid when I try to read the French original. Not stilted, though formal by our modern standardsless standards. Not precious or overblown. Simple, well-built sentences telling the sad tale of a father whose love for his daughters blinds him to the budding rascality and rapscallionhood of the smooth-talking arriviste Rastignac. Delphine, Goriot's daughter, doesn't attend her father's funeral; nor does her sister; and yet there sits Rastignac....

The reason this story continues to be read is simple: A classic is a book that never finishes saying all it has to say. These tropes are as fresh as the morning dew and as old as the hills. Balzac brought them intensely and vividly to life in Père Goriot. No one, save perhaps wily seducer Vautrin, he who makes a good-enough bloke over into a sleazy social climber, is an unmixed all-good or all-bad person. And that's a rare thing today, let alone in the 1830s when this was first published. An excellent read IN THE RAFFEL TRANSLATION!

Illusions perdues, written intermittently over a period of nearly ten years in the late thirties and early forties, draws mostly on Balzac's time as a struggling writer in the Paris of 1821-22 (unlike other novelists of the time, he never seems to be shy of pinning himself to the calendar), but also brings in material from his legal training and his time as a printer, papermaker and publisher (clearly, nothing was ever wasted!).

It's pretty clear from the title where Balzac wants the plot to show more go: provincial poet Lucien dreams of literary glory and his friend David dreams of making his family's fortune by a radical improvement to the paper-making process that will slash the cost of printing. We know from the start that the author is going to dangle the prospect of success in front of both of them, only to whip it savagely away at the last minute. But he takes his time about it, and obviously changed his mind a few times along the way about just how he is going to get there. Lucien is slapped down and humiliated multiple times, both in his native Angoulême and in Paris, but keeps bouncing up to try again in a new direction, without ever reflecting that his enemies will remember him from last time. Meanwhile (the stories are concurrent and interlinked, even though Balzac obviously wrote them several years apart) David is caught in a ludicrously complex plot involving multiple competing parties all trying to steal his invention and/or force him to sign it over for a fraction of what it's worth.

There's a huge amount going on, and it never gets even remotely dull, even if it is occasionally difficult to remember who is supposed to be on which side. And a wealth of fascinating, cynical comment on the literary and commercial world and the people who make their money out of it in more or less (usually less) legal and ethical ways. Glorious moments like the incident of the publisher who comes to see Lucien in his Paris lodgings to buy his novel - the advance he's intending to offer starts off at a thousand francs, but the sight of the squalid street Lucien lives in already makes him knock a couple of hundred off, and by the time he's got to the fourth floor he's under two hundred. And insights into the way the press uses its power to blackmail producers, publishers and public figures - if the editors aren't paid off, the papers will attack with negative reviews or - much worse - ignore the items concerned altogether. There are a couple of lovely scenes where an experienced journalist explains to Lucien how to write a lethal review of a good novel (simply attack it for not being something other than what it is) or a favourable review of a terrible play. Very often you get the feeling that Balzac would have been right at home in the era of social media and "fake" news. Plus ça change,...

There's a great bit of Balzac chutzpah in the magnificent but quite irrelevant scene towards the end of the book, where he spends twenty pages introducing a major character we've been vaguely expecting to turn up, but have forgotten all about by the time we've read 600 pages. Wasted space as far as the plot is concerned, but it does somehow give you an irresistible urge to find out what happens by reading the next book in the sequence!

Just about the only thing I remembered from last time I read this, in my teens, was that Goriot was in the vermicelli business. It's odd how that sort of unimportant detail sticks in your mind!

In a way, this is the standard French novel plot, i.e. young man from the provinces comes to Paris and meets sophisticated older woman, but with two very particular twists: Goriot, the retired businessman who has sacrificed everything to launch his daughters into society and now finds himself treated show more like King Lear, and the elusive Vautrin, a self-made man of a different sort altogether. The very compact story makes a nice change from the long-windedness of 19th century English novelists with three volumes to fill, and so does Balzac's healthy cynicism: a story doesn't necessarily have to end with everyone neatly married off, and it's perfectly possible for someone to attend a sentimental deathbed scene without becoming a reformed character as a result. show less
Honoré de Balzac has a reputation as one of the great writers of literary realism, so it may come as a surprise that this work incorporates a supernatural item: the magical donkey skin of the title. The title, in fact, is a play on words in the original French, for "la peau de chagrin" translates not only as "the wild donkey's skin" (or "shagreen," to use the technical term for this kind of hide) but also as "the skin of sadness."

The hero of Balzac's story is a young man by the name of show more Raphael de Valentin who, having fallen on hard times, gambles away his last bit of money and so, with nothing left to live for, decides to throw himself into the Seine River at nightfall. While waiting for night to arrive, he wanders into a shop where he encounters an old man who presents him with the magic skin of the title. The skin, he says, will grant Raphael anything he wishes, but each wish will cause the skin to shrink until, when it contracts to nothing, Raphael's life will end. Readers familiar with nineteenth-century European literature will recognize that this text is partly a response to Goethe's Faust, a work which repopularized this medieval legend for the romantic age.

Largely absent from Balzac's Faustian tale, however, is the religious dimension. Although Raphael does have a symbolic encounter with a portrait of Christ painted by his Renaissance namesake shortly before receiving the skin, the object of Balzac's philosophical study falls firmly on the human limitations of his main character. Raphael is a stereotype, but deliberately so, for Balzac designs him for a number of overlapping purposes. Primarily, of course, he is an everyman, sharing enough in common with the average reader that we easily understand his temptation in taking the skin. He is only human, after all, and it is the folly inherent to human desire that is the central focus of this novel.

The typical plot of a novel is designed around the struggle to get something you don't have: think of Dickens's Great Expectations, in which Pip's striving to become a gentleman overlaps with his desire for Estella. Balzac brilliantly reverses this scenario and considers whether humans would be happy if all obstacles to fulfillment were removed, if everything we wanted in life were simply handed to us on a plate. The result, as the reader witnesses in the case of Raphael, is unexpectedly tragic, and yet in a way that makes relentless, terrifying sense. Balzac masterfully unfolds his parable about the paradoxes of human desire in three movements: in the first, Raphael obtains the skin and makes his first wish; in the second, he recounts to his companions the history of how he came to be where he is; and in the last, we see the terrible consequences of his use of the skin. Balzac has a reputation for unsentimental endings, but there is a wonderfully ambiguous olive branch that is extended to Raphael at the end that will leave the careful reader wondering for a long time what Balzac actually intended to say in this conclusion.

Readers should be aware that The Wild Ass's Skin is a complex novel, one that requires a certain level of skill and historical understanding to unlock all its various layers. Some passages may seem obscure or unnecessarily decorative, but believe me, there are ideas fizzing about in those pages that are worth learning about. I have focused mainly on the elements of the story that transcend Balzac's time, for instance, but there are some wonderfully pointed jabs at the French society of Balzac's lifetime that can be understood by reading Raphael's character as an embodiment of Restoration France, a political husk that finally ran out of magical wishes of its own with the July Revolution of 1830, a year before this novel was published.

For first-time readers of Balzac's work, The Wild Ass's Skin is an excellent place to start. It is a brilliantly insightful meditation on the paradox of human desire, wherein the difficulty of obtaining what we desire, rather than the object of desire itself, plays a key part in our overall satisfaction. Balzac's fable shows us how we as human beings, lacking the wisdom of this insight, are often the architects of our own folly and unhappiness, taking the easy road to tedious comfort when what we really want is the challenge of finding a more profound happiness.
