While I am rating this the same, I did not enjoy it as much as the first in the series: The New Order. However, I see it as possibly the necessary, less interesting middle act sandwiched between tension-building exposition and dramatic conclusion. The story is of Hitler's methodical, purposeful accumulation of political power covers nearly a decade of rallies and manoeuvring. In this, we learn how he was a political chameleon ("no you can't make highways"/"yes, we do the autobahn and it was show more always my idea", etc.) and betrayed friends with the same ease with which he crushed enemies. Up next, I will find out how this story ends in The SS.

This superbly illustrated coffee table book published by Time Life Books should not stay on the coffee table; it belongs in the kitchen. It is just as well that the coffee table size book is supplemented by a smaller paperback size one that extracts all the recipes and so you can avoid the inevitable food stains spoiling some amazing photographs of foods and markets in India.
The introduction to the recipe book starts unpromisingly by stating that: "The recipes in the book have been selected show more to present the dishes that are most practical for British Cooks. Although some modifications were necessary, every effort has been made to preserve the authentic character of Indian Food" A quick glance inside and you will realise that these are not dumbed-down recipes; they just shout authenticity. The first recipe in the book is for garam masala an essential spice mix for many Indian dishes and this is followed by "ghee" (Indian Butter oil). There is no substitute for making your own ghee, your curries will take on a wonderful nutty taste, that you won't get with shop bought products.
The recipes cover all areas of Indian cooking; vegetarian dishes, rice dishes, meat, fish and poultry, breads, salads and yogurt dishes, chutneys, sweet dishes and sweet meats. The recipe index (there are over 115) is in both English and Hindi. The proof of any recipe collection is whether they work when you try them in your own kitchen. I have not tried every recipe in the book but those that I have work beautifully. I am particularly fond of Indian vegetable curries and there are some good ones here: Ghobi ki sabzi (curried cauliflower), Mattar pannir (home made cheese and peas) and Baingan ka tikka (aubergines baked with curried vegetable stuffing). The meat and fish dishes are excellent too with a full range of; dhansaks, goshts, kormas and koftis. Any Indian recipe book like this one that doesn't contain recipes for onion bhajis or chicken tikka masala has got to be in with a shout for some sort of authenticity.

Brief overviews of particular photographers, grouped every twenty years from 1860 through 1960. How does a Life survey not include Margaret Bourke-White, of all people? She had the very first cover of Life! Of the sixty-seven photographers featured, only two are women -- Julia Margaret Cameron in the 1860-1880 section and Dorothea Lange in 1920-1940.
This ties into a criticism of the Time-Life Photography series as a whole, which is that it is apparently almost inconceivable that a woman show more would be behind the lens instead of in front. Almost all of the photographers and movements feature throughout the series. This volume exists purely to canonize, which makes its exclusivity disappointing.

This book offers an excellent introduction to the history of life on our planet, and the natural processes that have produced life’s diversity. Filled with large colorful illustrations and clear explanatory text, it is suitable for adolescents and adults. Its coverage encompasses the process of evolution as well as evolution’s products – the animals, plants, and microbes that have populated our world over the past 3.5 billion years.
The first of the book’s chapters is entitled show more “Evolution of Species,” and considers what species are, how many are thought to exist, and how they form, as well as concepts of natural selection and adaptation. Chapter 2, “When Life Began” describes formation of the earth, origins of life, the first living things, how cells arose, and how multicellular life evolved. Chapter 3 is titled “The Paleozoic Dawn of Modern Life” and recounts the origins of backboned animals, early fishes, jaws, invasion of the land by plants and animals, the first flying animals (insects), and early amphibians and reptiles. Chapter 4, “When Dinosaurs Ruled” explores the Mesozoic Era. Although dinosaur biology necessarily gets much attention, many other groups are also explored including birds, mammal- like reptiles, ammonites, flowering plants, and the (non-dinosaurian) reptiles of the sea and air. Chapter 5, imprecisely entitled “The Humans Arrive” actually explores the entire Cenozoic. It considers various types of mammals (notably horses, bats, whales, elephants), as well as the early hominids and our own species. Chapter 6 is called “Scientific Proofs of Evolution” and considers evidence from embryology, structural similarity (homology), convergent evolution, and the independent evolution of Australian mammals. I found this chapter a bit disappointing only because it could have cited so many other lines of evidence, including behavioral homologies, genetic similarities, experimental evidence, and the fossil record itself. However, this is a minor criticism given that all chapters in this book offer implicit evidence of the evolution of life.
Having been published in 1992, this book is of course not current (this issue is the only reason for my not awarding 4 stars). Viewing this book, it is striking to realize how much more we have learned about the process of evolution and about the history of particular plant and animal groups, including our own relatives, the extinct hominids. Nonetheless, Evolution of Life provides a fine introduction to the subject, one likely to spark the interest of any reader who picks it up. show less
