Centuries after atomic wars destroyed Earth, the remnants of humanity live in domed cities called Keeps beneath Venus's oceans. The society has grown apathetic and class-ridden, strictly stratified between normal humans and the long-lived Immortal ruling class.

Sam Reed is born to an Immortal father, Blaze Harker. Following the death of his mother in childbirth, Sam's grief-stricken, deranged father has the infant surgically mutilated to look like a normal human. The baby is cast out to live show more in the plebs, the working-class sectors, growing up in foster care with no knowledge of his true heritage or his Immortal lifespan.

Growing up on the wrong side of the law, Sam Reed develops a deep-seated, psychopathic rage and a burning resentment for the ruling Immortals. He rises through the criminal underworld to become a wealthy and despised power player.

Driven by ambition and a desire to disrupt the stagnant status quo, Sam spearheads a massive, manipulative campaign. He believes that humanity needs struggle and danger to avoid atrophy, and forces society's hand into attempting to colonize the deadly, untamed surface of Venus.

After schemes and betrayals leave him drugged and unconscious for decades, Sam awakens as an eighty-year-old man, only to discover he hasn't aged. He uncovers the truth about his heritage, embraces his Immortal identity, and seeks revenge against his father and the ruling elite. Ultimately, Sam's violent, abrasive energy shatters the stagnancy of the underwater Keeps. His campaign forces humanity to conquer the surface, serving as a vital first step in returning mankind to the stars.

I am not sure where to start reviewing this mash-up of pulp science fiction and sword and planet (the planet is Earth) from the 25 year old Henry Kuttner. It truly is both dreadful and wonderful. Is it great literature? Absolutely not. Is it rollicking absurd fun for pulp fan boys? You bet.

It has everything - death rays, vampiric plague, beneficent alien, Conan-like villain, luscious lovelies (three, in fact, from different time periods) cold-hearted scientist who learns warmth, a laboratory show more (you must have a laboratory), a race against time to save the world and more!

There are low points. The absurdity of having a Carthaginian gladiator (absurd in itself) being called Scipio suggests Kuttner was beyond ignorance when it came to an understanding of Roman history. Kuttner, we can say with some surety, was no intellectual.

The plot is fast-moving and the characterisation stereotypical but we can summarise it briefly as noble alien seeks to make something of our world, screws up royally while trying to do so but then saves the world with a scientist genius when it faces a devastating existential threat.

There is a message that is very much of the mentality of the era of 'Things To Come' - the world drops its petty imperialist squabbles (this was, after all, written in 1940) and comes together deploying all its resources regardless of class or interest to defeat the threat.

Donald Trump might like to note that the world is saved by the close co-operation of the United States and China (there is a sympathetic if racially stereotyped Chinese character) and we could have fun comparing the handling of the vampiric energy plague with that of COVID-19 today.

Not a book to go out of your way to read but an enjoyable romp for fans of interwar American pulp. For the record, it is also available on Kindle under its original title "A Million Years to Conquer".

This 1936 Weird Tales story has to be one of the best horror tales of the last century, an evil hybrid of Poe's 'Premature Burial' and Lovecraft's 'Pickman's Model', claustrophobic to the nth degree and not to be read by anyone late at night who fears enclosed spaces or asphyxiation and who wishes to sleep.

It can be read at https://www.redfez.net/fiction/horror-the-graveyard-rats-857
I enjoyed the surreal, at times almost Lovecraftian sensibility of this one, but its hokeyness quotient is also quite elevated. While the "encounter with a lost civilization hidden in the remote Amazon" concept is hardly an original premise for a story of this ilk, Valley of the Flame does offer some intriguing twists, most notably a "bubble" zone in which each living being's metabolism and time-sense flows much more quickly than in the outside world, which has allowed an evolutionary show more process to run its full course while little time has past in the outside world. Having said that, at its heart this is really a rather conventional pulp story in which the hero explores a fantastic setting, fights a villain, saves the day, and gets the "girl". show less
